Sir Ian McKellen Almost QUIT The Hobbit! | Gandalf Vs The Green Screen
Description:
Step into the digital realm of filmmaking with our latest KZfaq Short, "Behind the Magic: Ian McKellen's Green Screen Battle in The Hobbit." Discover the emotional and technical challenges faced by Sir Ian McKellen, the iconic actor behind Gandalf, during the making of "The Hobbit" trilogy. Unlike the communal filming experience of the "Lord of the Rings" series, McKellen encountered a solitary struggle, acting alone against a green screen, guided only by photographs of his fellow cast members. This video delves into the profound impact that modern digital techniques have on actors, highlighting McKellen's dedication and resilience in overcoming these obstacles to bring Gandalf to life once more. Join us in exploring the unseen trials behind the cinematic magic and the incredible commitment of actors like McKellen to their craft.

The Hobbit movies fell short because they tried to take a 89,000 word book and stretch it out into 3 movies. The Fellowship of the Ring had almost twice as many words and was able to be portrayed in a single movie. The amount of bullshit they had to make up was ridiculous.

@@twitch3334worth noting though that the first part of the Lord of the Rings book (known as the Fellowship of the Ring - remember LotR is one book according to Tolkien) does not correlate to the film called The Fellowship of the Ring. @twineweaver
@twineweaver Ай бұрын
Peter Jackson actually explains this in the hobbit appendices. Basically he said with the way the lotr was filmed you were able to trick the camera, but since they were using 3D for the Hobbit, it would show the differences in depth so they couldn't do the scenes where the actors were just standing farther away/closer to the camera. They did still use the trick of using scale doubles in scenes where they were able to though!

Recording a lonely green screen performance with a classically trained actor, is just like recording the cello section for a Hollywood soundtrack in a small studio instead of a large hall with the rest of a huge ensemble, they do it for complete creative control and the "larger than life" epicness is the payoff in the final composition/mix. Everyone has to imagine stuff at some point in those enormous productions :)

I often thought about how much money must have played almost the entire factor for actors like RDJ in the Marvel films. To be on set a great movie with great actors must be magic. With crazy good dialogue, not constant fake CGI effects post production. The fact that Sir Ian McKellen put up with another trilogy with even more of a souped up version of CGI and lonely work, I wouldn’t have blamed him one bit for not taking the role again. Are they fun to watch? Yes. Are the polished and more times than not come out looking great? Yes. But the constant green behind you, the 16 hour days, the hanging from cables and waiting half an hour for a 20 second motion and soundbite? Gotta be brutal. Yes, before the inevitable “ I don’t feel bad for millionaires” comments come in, I get it. But they got to where they were for a reason. They were living on scraps, at least most of them just to slowly build up their work in the industry. That takes pride and determination. They’re not just bots collecting a check. They shouldn’t be punished or treated like they don’t have legitimate gripes or issues just because they make money, especially when that money is based on being one of the best at something as highly competitive as acting. Hundreds of people at that same level compete for that role, and someone has to win it. They can complain all they want about how grueling the work, post production and insane hours after film they put into fan interaction, reporters and interviews to contractually promote the movie that they want to, in my opinion.

It was not meant to be made by Peter Jackson in the first place. The Hobbit was supposed to be done by Guillermo del Toro. However after some pre production stuff went bad Toro gave up on the project and it was given to a reluctant Peter Jackson who then did as much as he could with as little time as he had. Not saying it couldn't have been better even with the unplanned director change but LOTR was made out of pure passion and had so much pre-production put in it. The Hobbit was made because money.
