Is there not a simpler way to answer this question? Did they ever meet prior to moria? Maybe not as Gandalf and during bane. But, what about in valinor? At some point, werent all balrogs not evil? Sauron wasn't always evil. And how many maia could there be? 100? A few hundred? I don't think their numbers were in the thousands. And if the maia numbers are relatively low, one could stand to think they all knew each other. So I think Gandalf and the balrogs knew each other, back before the first age, before melkor corrupted the maiar spirits.

I'm not convinced. Of course Gandalf would have known what a Balrog is, being extremely learnèd. But he didn't know *which* Balrog this was. Tolkien gradually reduced the numbers of Balrogs over the evolution of his legendarium, from hundreds to perhaps no more than seven. It would not be surprising, if there were only ever fewer than ten Balrogs, that those in the Undying Lands would have known their names. After all, Balrogs were also maia, and would thus have participated in the Music of the Ainur, albeit among the first of those aligned to Melkor's discordant themes. But Gandalf appears not to know the name of this Balrog. It seems unlikely, however, that Durin's Bane could have known who Gandalf was. Sure, he probably realised that Gandalf was a maia when he countered Gandalf's enspelling of the door from the Chamber of Mazarbul, and he certainly would have known Gandalf was a maia even before Gandalf announced himself. But he would almost certainly not have known that Gandalf was one of Nienor's (sp?) maia, nor that he faced Olórin specifically. The Balrogs would have been sequestered in Melkor's fortresses except when they went abroad to do battle, so never had much of a chance to get to know other maia in Arda.

The Balrog seems somewhat taken aback, possibly confused when he meets Gandalf. I take it they didn't know each other but the Balrog was unsure about the encounter. Could this guy actually really be a maiar?

I might be totally wrong, but I always got the feeling that Tom Bombadil showed up in the beginning of LOTR because Tolkien was still figuring out what the story was going to be in Book 1. I don't know what Tolkien's writing process was like, but it is possible he did not have everything plotted out ahead of time.

They probably bit off more than they could chew. The name itself doesnt really make any sense since they seem to be focused a bit on the entire Second Age, though the show itself is called the Rings of Power. The timeline necessarily needs to be compressed if they are going to illustrate the making of the Rings all the way to the war of the last alliance. Otherwise, every season would be "so another century passed and all the humans from the previous season are dead." Tough to maintain interest in the show at that point. One way around that would be to focus more on Elves since they obviously stick around for a while. Im a bit confused as to why Celebrimbor doesnt feature more since he made the rings of power and thats what the show is called after all. From a business sense, I would guess the show will continue for a season 2 and likely a season 3. We may see something where they curtail the plan for 5 seasons and just announce season 3 is the finale.

I just finished watching the extended versions for the first time and I can’t really tell what was added but I gotta think that’s how it was intended and the movies just flow so well into one another and from sequence to sequence. Love these movies even more now than when I was a kid
