Come and take one of the most unique steam train rides in the whole of the UK, enjoy a trip on Sir Tom at Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum and steam your way up a sharp incline right to the rock face of the quarry. Sit back and listen to Sir Tom as he navigates the steep wet incline (1 in 20 at one section) and really appreciate what these little engines can do.
Filmed in very typical wet Lake District weather, this journey is simply stunning, and filmed from a lofty position on the cab it gives us a unique perspective on an already unique railway. The journey is a 25 minute round trip really does offer scenery you wouldn't expect to see on any normal railway journey. The 1/2 mile journey boast an impressive 1/20 section as you literally climb your way up to the rock face. On the day you get to have a look around the quarry while the loco runs around and have a brief stop before being taken back down.
SIR TOM completed the first full season of work at Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum in 2010. Sir Tom was rebuilt and is driven by Ian Hartland.
The loco was made by Bagnall of Stafford in 1926 and named after Sir Tom Callender of British Insulated Callender Cables. This 0-4-0 saddle tank narrow gauge loco worked at BICC in Kent until 1968. After lying idle for thirty three years, it arrived at Threlkeld in 2001, and since then has undergone complete restoration. Sir Tom is used to haul passenger trains from the middle quarry into the inner quarry.
The Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum is situated three miles east of Keswick, in the heart of the breath taking Lake District in Cumbria.

I love that the wet weather just shows this place in a different light, not worse but different.

The end of the line looks a bit hairy😊😊😊. I worked at BICC Erith 1962/1968, remember Sir Tom and WOTO Well, oil fired and 3'-00" gauge as I remember.

I really wish I was old enough to remember some of these locos when they was working (not that you should wish to be older of course). Sadly at 35 I am only really old enough to ever know these as heritage pieces. I just about remember the early Blackpool trams being run daily and they are now run as heritage, that is about as close as I get.

Looks like the weather's been a bit wet! Careful now, you don't want these locos and carriages to shrink from spending too long in the wash, now! LOL😁

11:08 You might want to get something to stop the drops of rain getting on your video camera lens, perhaps.

The cameras I use are supposed to have hydrophobic glass, and I have seen water roll off them in the past, but I think the lake district was just a bit too much on this day. I have an entire run that I had to delete because it was a lot worse 😔

@neilforbes416 simple solution simply place a plastic bag over the camera and lens. Next cut a hole for the lens to poke through and secure it with elastic bands. Your lens will stay dry

@@top40researcher31 Bad idea! The image would be wrecked because the camera is viewing the image through the plastic.
