It takes years to become a great squatter. Becoming well rounded is just as important is developing technical mastery. These are my 3 favorite squat variations for increasing mobility, positioning, improving starting power, and preventing weaknesses.

Another good video, for years I've thought box squats were pointless as a raw lifter, but I started doing them about 6 weeks ago and they've certainly grown on me. Not sure what kind of carryover I'll get to my squat from them yet but I can definitely feel the hip strength improving which should help my deadlift grow at the very least, also it's just nice to have another tool in the shed for a different lower body stimulus. I was always under the impression that box squats were "cheating" in some way, but if you do them properly they seem to be pretty damn effective even with lighter loads.

Yeah, they use the 'kick' from the hamstrings to reverse off the box, which may have some relevance in a suit with a very wide stance, but there isn't a raw squatter alive who initiates their change of direction that way in a meet.

Bromely to back u up on squatting a little higher to get stronger my best training is when I’m an inch two inches I think people get too caught up on internet depth haters and sacrifice strength gains only time depth matters is meets I might of hit some big squats in my day

I’m not Alex (obviously) but I thought I’d throw in my two cents. It can be done for either purpose because it doesn’t have as lengthy of a recovery (especially if it’s at/above parallel). I have found the most success increasing my deadlift if I replace my comp squats with beltless box squats. It has helped my squat as well, but IMO it’s more of a deadlift builder.

I always did wide high box squats 💯 raw and I was raw squatting 606 raw and beltless at 215 in the 220’s at 6ft tall and I was an athlete first and powerlifter second. High box squats are great but I suspect they contributed to my hip issues. Use caution

Do you recommend this variation to temporarily relieve hip pain at the bottom of my regular back squat?

Hi i run your program bullmastif I should do box squat after 10 days I don’t know how much should i load the bar My max squat is now 150 kg if i would like to do 6 reps on 7 rpe

I’m 5’9, would you say right around a 15” box should do the trick? Always feel like I need to get a ton of momentum to move any appreciable weight from “low” boxes

What to you think about touch and go box squats just for depth control?

Never, unless it's literally your first time squatting and you are doing it as a goblet squat. Finding consistent depth on a squat is Technique 101; if you can't do that consistently without a box, you need to take several steps back.

Havent maxed in 4 years. Best competition performance was tieing Larry Wheels at the LA Fit Expo Strongman last year, 17 on a lever squat they called '510lbs'
