You forgot to cover gem combining. If you put a red gem and a blue gem next to each other and play Ballad of the Mer it'll make a purple gem that sells for way more, it's practically free gold.

Alright I know a super easy way to farm them. Start any Athena voyage (not needed but will speed things up) and go to any very small island. Once there check out the island. If there are ocean crawlers then kill them but if there is anything else or nothing at all then climb into a cannon and shoot your self away from the island. Take a mermaid back to reload the island and for a chance for ocean crawlers to spawn. Keep doing this and you will start to stack up quickly. (Note: if you leave something on the island and take the mermaid back it will probably not despawn.)
