Sir Norman Wisdom

Sir Norman Wisdom

15 жыл бұрын

Sir Norman Joseph Wisdom OBE (4 February 1915 -- 4 October 2010) was an English actor, comedian and singer-songwriter best known for a series of comedy films produced between 1953 and 1966 featuring his hapless onscreen character Norman Pitkin. Wisdom gained a celebrity status in lands as far apart as South America, Iran and many Eastern Bloc countries, particularly in Albania, where his films were the only ones by Western actors permitted by dictator Enver Hoxha to be shown. Charlie Chaplin once referred to Wisdom as his "favourite clown".
Wisdom later forged a career on Broadway in New York and as a television actor, winning critical acclaim for his dramatic role of a dying cancer patient in the television play Going Gently in 1981. It was broadcast on 5 June that year. He toured Australia and South Africa.[3] After the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, a hospice was named in his honour.[4] In 1995 he was given the Freedom of the City of London and of Tirana.[4] The same year he received an OBE.
Wisdom was knighted in 2000 and spent much of his later life on the Isle of Man. Some of his later appearances included roles in Last of the Summer Wine and Coronation Street, and he retired from acting at the age of 90 after his health deteriorated.

I had the good fortune to see Norman do a live performance in Coventry many years ago. I laughed so much I don't know how I didn't have a heart attack. A funnier comedian I have never seen, live or on TV. Pure genius.

The saddest part of a documentary I saw on him is when he tells of reconnecting with his estranged, remarried father. His dad's reaction when he turned up was simply to say "You. Out." He told the story without an ounce of self pity, and you could tell it was a formative moment, helping to make him one hundred times the success and a thousand times the man his father obviously was.

@Stephen Reie NO-ONE not even Lee Evans (the joke) would be able to play Norman Wisdom because they would never be able to portray the raw enthusiasm and talent that Norman had. Why do you think no-one has done a movie about Norman Wisdoms' life? It's because there'll never be an actor good enough or talented enough to play Norman

Wisdom doesn't enough credit. His movies are actually very good and he's great in them, up there with Chaplin (funnier in my opinion). He had a crazy, barely contained energy. I need to watch some again. I think people got a little tired and embarrassed by his chat show appearances but go back and watch him in his prime.
