The US Marine Corps was the only branch to not make an eSports team. When asked why, they responded that war isn't a game and shouldn't be cheapened by treating it like one. Because apparently at some point I shifted into the alternate reality where the Marines are responsible adults.

In my life I've found Marines to often be some of the most respectable people. I may have a very skewed perspective on life from years of violence, so I tend to value traits much of polite society looks down on. That said, I can agree with the idea that war is cheapened when treated as a game. But I approach from the opposite side. I think rather than making war more like a game, we should treat games more like war, if that makes any sense. The idea being to create stakes that impact the soul of a player and leave them changed from their experience. I find that such a life leads to a great deal of sadness, but brings with it wisdom and understanding. It is greater to approach a dream as though reality, than to treat reality as though a dream.

Former US army cavalry scout here. I can confirm that before I joined I was obsessed with video games and as such had my interest in the military peaked by various games. I ended up getting to know a few impressionable guys who joined up thinking they were going to do video game type shit, but personally I was attracted to the sense of comradery the military advertises. And to be completely honest I did get that, but ultimately I felt like everything else about the military just made it not worthwhile. I never ran into anyone who outright stated they were inspired by Call of Duty to join the military, and in fact making fun of that kind of thing was a joke we were telling each other starting with the first day of basic training. Sometimes I think people confuse the supposed desire to live out a military video game fantasy like Call of Duty and the natural urge most young men have to be a strong, unkillable badass who shoots guns and doesn't afraid of anything. Being the hero who kills all the bad guys is not something that originated with Call of Duty, or any video game.

@Kurdtzdopelgangr
@Kurdtzdopelgangr Жыл бұрын
@@SPaZchAOs I was active duty so I can't tell you much about the NG, but I can tell you a little bit about basic. There's three basic 'phases' everyone goes through. Shock, Anger, Indifference. At first everything you're experiencing is so different and demanding from what you're used to that you're basically in a state of shock for the first week or so. Honestly, I don't remember very much at all about the first eight days. The anger part comes when you're finally past that initial period and you're kind of used to what's going on, and the drills are constantly punishing you for a lot of stupid things other people are doing. Indifference is when you're finally completely used to it all and you give way less of a shit about the dumb stuff people are doing. You're gonna find out really quickly that discipline doesn't come naturally to anyone. I guess I'll give you two general pieces of advice as well. First is to be friendly and make friends. You really don't want to be the asshole no one in the platoon likes. Talk to people. Second is more of a personal thing, but it's something I wish someone had told me before going in. If you ever feel very, very strongly that the army isn't for you, you're probably right. Despite what people will tell you at the time, there is no shame in just admitting that it isn't for you. The drills will make fun of you for quitting, and so might some of your battle buddies(I think they're calling you Warrior Companions now, lol) but what they think doesn't matter. This is your life, not theirs. I never felt strongly that I didn't want to keep doing it, but I do wish someone had given me a reality check about this. Good luck, bud. Basic is way less hard and a lot more boring then you're probably thinking.

PMCs that killed their parents and use their earnings to support their younger siblings. There are countless child soldiers like these in the PMCs. Nowadays, anyone with a computer can get combat training. The FPS gamea these children love are distributed for free by these companies. Of course, it's all just virtual training. It's so easy for them to get absorbed by these war games. And before they know it, they're in the PMCs holding real guns. These kids end up fighting in proxy wars that have nothing to do with their own lives. They think it's cool to fight like this. They think that combat is life. They don't need a reason to fight. After all, for them it's only a game." Big Mama, circa 2014, during the Guns of the Patriots Incident. (2008)

German military actually advertises serving as: "Multiplayer at its best" You will also find the german military on conventions of all kinds. I personally know they where at a Car convention. They brought a main battle tank you know, as one does. Thier marketing budget is big and ive heared payment for serving isnt bad, especially after current chancellor decided to just throw made up money at the Bundeswehr. The problem is ofcourse that still no one wants to go there. Afraid of basic training being far from home, dieing, getting crippled. Maybe even needing to actually defend against the Russians if Putin continues his big brain crusade. (Or actually starts making progress) So what im saying is even though the german military is fun sized compared to the US military right now, you can see similar recruitment strategies.

I´m a german and about to enlist in circa a year or so. The thing about the german military not hitting their recruitment goals every year is the stigma every german gets through education. Especially on the higher paths of education there is enough talk in history class about the second world war and the nazis and how all of this is to be despised. German soldiers are therefore seen as right wing extremists and stuff, especially by the younger generations. Old people are more likely to say that we need a strong Bundeswehr (Military). Anyways, that´s just the opinion of....well, not even a recruit. Take care!

Actually i think you hit the nail on the head with this comment. The recruitment rate is tanked because every one that is competent to lead has been fired. Nobody wants to be used by people who actively betray and destroy their own country and spit on all the men and women who gave their lives fighting to protect American independence. Not to mention the complete and utter lack of planning to achieve better results in actual war settings. It seems as a soldier you are sacrifice before your death waiting for orders from people far from suffering and completely devoid of basic common sense or reason just to fulfill objectives that are ultimately political and asset based. I remember watching the news before Trump was president and Isis was on the move taking over all the territories that had led to tens of thousands of deaths all the years previous. They were hunting down Coptic Christians and murdering all before them. Obama took no action let the problem fester and destroy any gain or prosperity we hoped to achieve. Trump allowed the millitary to do their jobs and put down the rabbid dogs almost as fast as it started. Ultimately your death would only be used to invoke political favor with the sweet words used and nothing will have been achieved but for the Industrial War Complex machine and corrupted evil people in charge. This basically goes for all nations and all supposed freedom fighters. These people don't care about life or peace they care about profit and power.

Game devs ALWAYS hype up their nationality. Escape from Tarkov (Ru) makes the AK platform have substantially lower recoil and gives their bullets unrealistically high damage values, while making the M4 platform have unrealistically uncontrollable recoil and bullets that are substantially less effective than their IRL counterparts. A prime example of this is that the standard AK ammunition (7.62×39 ps) does 40% more damage than a state of the art Nato round designed for slicing through armor like butter such as the SSA AP (Which can't even kill players with a headshot past 30 meters in game, but is essentially always lethal irl) and the nato ammo also gets increased recoil when fired and has a -6% accuracy debuff.

Honestly, it's a bit of a shame the US Army isn't developing games anymore. Arma and Squad could really use a bit of real, serious competition, and with VR tech now properly consolidating itself in the videogames market, the a new America's Army game with an Arma like open world, Squad-like tactical gameplay, but with full VR integration, would make for an amazing milsim game. And let's be realistic, too. Filthy casuals that play Overwatch or League don't give a shit about the military. But the milsim crowd is full of dudes who are excellent for targeted recruitment ads, not to mention there's a lot of veterans that play those games as well.

European soldier here. America's Army: Proving Grounds is one of the best video games I've played in terms of emphasizing teamwork. Also the US army propaganda is lit, makes even me want to join.
@evanpeacock6103
@evanpeacock6103 Жыл бұрын
Sir Swag you did a really good job with the video, but you missed one detail that also had a major sway in recruitment when it comes to video games. That detail being the veterans and active duty players that also make up a large portion of the gaming community. I can't tell you how many gaming lobbies I have been in where veterans and active duty are talking to young people about their stories and the things they experienced while serving. This has been a major factor for the past decade and a half thanks to communication platforms like discord, team speak, steam chat, Xbox live chat, ect. But this works as a double edged sword because for the past two years since the military has now become even more political instead of focusing on what a military should be doing; I have noticed that a lot of veterans and even some active duty have told people in these gaming lobbies not to join. Army, Navy, and Marine recruitment is down badly right now. So much so I see adds where they are offering people to join that are in their 50s to help out with certain jobs and to put on the uniform. The Army was so desperate that at one point during 2022 they said you could join if you didn't have a high school diploma or a GED before being brutally mocked by everyone that they did a 180 and stopped doing it after a week.

I really don't get the military being political in any way. What do you mean focusing on what any military should do?
@evanpeacock6103
@evanpeacock6103 Жыл бұрын
@@jessicalindo7977 A military's soul fundamental job is to protect the state and it's citizens from outside threats and if necessary uphold the laws of the land and the rights of the people. Their goal is to operate under any condition to neutralize their enemies. The U.S military especially those in the Pentagon have seemed to gotten confused with this basic concept along the way. From army generals coming at saying the biggest threat to our democracy (note we are not a democracy but a republic) is white men, to the secretary of the navy going before a Senate committee calling Christians strange and possibly threatening people even though a large portion of our armed forces identity as Christian. There is also the evidence of their inclusivity videos that they make mandatory to watch that were about people's pronouns. The dropping of physical standards not just for the average MOS non combat jobs but for special forces jobs as well to include more women in them to fill in actual quota instead of taking from the best of the best ( and I am not saying women aren't capable some are, but if you are doing something like that just to get to a certain number so you look good to your superiors and certain people on one side of the political aisle instead of training for the best of the best to go kill the enemy it doesn't look good for you). Frankly I could point to a mirade of other things to prove the military is becoming more political but I haven't got all day. My recommendation is talk to another veteran who has gotten out in the last couple of years and he'll say the same thing and more. Have a good day.

Don't become an imperialist pig! The Us Army is there to subjugate the black or brown people and the governments of other nations so that they benefit the US ideological and economical interests. That Army is a racist, capitalist, imperialist and sexist institution designed to eat young bright people like you and churn out masticated broken individuals. Even if you don't see combat in your hypothetical service, the Army will still try to destroy any critical thinking and dissidence you may have. You don't have to follow the tradition of your family, as your destiny (as melodramatic as it sounds) is still not written down yet and it is specially not in your blood.

I really like the video, and I really think that this topic can be expanded further. Perhaps in a future video or just as a discussion placed into the KZfaq gamer ethos. If this video wanted to completely discuss the relationship between online video games and US recruitment, two major games/ideas are missing. The first would easily be war thunder. Some people on online threads, such as on Reddit, have leaked classified information to win either online arguments or in further discussion of the game. This has been so much of a problem that current recruits are being investigated for playing war thunder, and people's applications to the military can be rejected on basis of being active war thunders gamers. At the same time, the game is so popular with military personnel that playing the game is an equal security risk and recruitment strategy. The second idea would be over the discussion of online video game radicalization. This topic may be too expansive and might need its own video. Many Neo-nazi or Islamist terrorist organizations also utilize online games as recruitment strategies for their militias. Just like the US Army, terrorist organizations look for lonely adrift gamer men to provide meaning in their lives through violence. Famously, ISIS recruited many terrorists from foreign nations through video games like World of Warcraft and Second Life. While these games lack military aesthetics and game mechanics, their emphasis on filling a social void allows for easy radicalization and grooming.

Eh i dont understand why people would expect the military to be like a game at all. Listen to any stories from veterans and you learn that you just spend 90% of your time waiting in a bunker, trench, or military base. And even when you are out on the front lines, it sounds like 90% of the time your bored as fuck, 9% of the time your sh!tt!ng yourself hiding from artilery, and 1% of the time you actually see the enemy. If i ever join the military, itll either be because a draft happened, because i end up homeless, or because some other country invaded. The only thing that makes me entertain the idea of joining is having a group to belong to, a sense of brotherhood. But i dont know if its worth it to me just for that.

I've been playing videogames for the past ten years, and enlisted in the Army National Guard as a 17 year-old. While I have been considering the military even from the time I was around 4(playing with toy soldiers), I only got serious about it in my freshman year of high school. While my story may be a bit of a rare case, my passion for the military, and the career I could make out of it, was one of the reasons I went from a D student, to an A student. Though right now I'm actually recruiting people in my school in order to get to E-4 Specialist. People look at the military in a bunch of different ways, but for me it's a very solid career choice as long as you go in with a lot of research under your belt. I'm going in as a 17 year-old high school junior under Split Training Option, so I get work around my remaining time at high school. I'm also going to become an officer upon graduating college for free (under the ROTC program), and will even get a pay raise since I'm already building time in service as an enlistedman. Something that people really get wrong about the military is how a getting PTSD is something everyone has to worry about. If it's through combat, it's very unlikely unless you have a combat MOS(Job). I'm an 11B infantryman, though even when I do go active duty, I probably won't see combat until I pass the specialty schools like Airborne, Ranger, and go Special Forces. Of course this won't be the case if a full-scale war breaks out. In that kind of a scenario, people outside of the special operations community will probably have to end up seeing combat. Though it would still mostly just be people with a combat MOS
