I'm honestly pretty disappointed too, the numbers at the end don't show the difference between civilians and active military, and they had to add in the mother of all understatements on top. They also didn't mention the people that got shot for trying to get food from aid vans and the injuries which were blamed on a "stampede" (even though medical staff said most of the injured had bullet wounds, so the stampede was most likely caused by people running away for their lives)

The thing about El Salvador’s situation is that while the immense power the president now wields is scary and could easily lead to a dictatorship, and the way in which some of prisoners were treated is wrong and there’s no doubt innocent men in there…..the thing is, you can’t deny that average El Salvadorans lives has been significantly improved by this scheme, and I don’t honestly know of any other way they could have achieved that. It certainly raises some tough questions.

I don't live in El Salvador, so I honestly have no idea what the future for that country looks like. How will it impact the citizens' trust in law enforcement and the government?

El Salvador summed up: We got Thanos/Tropico Player as a leader. He's literally making everything better but also has total control over everything. he's still the best leader we had in generations but he can cause a civil war if they try to force him out from all the good he's doing. Ends jusfiy the means BUT the dude hasn't turned out to be an evil asshole... YET. If he leaves office once his last term is up. BRUH. German here. Farming is already highly subsidized. Most farmers turn a huge profit. For example a farm with 40 acres and 3 people working can turn a profit, not revenue, of 160k a year, food is already paid by the company, as well as 'company' cars (talking top of the line Mercedes G Class or something similar). Less than 3% of their overall revenue is due to the subsidies that the government was planning on cutting. They already took some of these cuts back. On another note: the current protests are organized by giant farming companies that pull in a lot of smaller farmers. The problem however is, that these smaller farmers have nothing in common with the giant farming companies. They are being used by said companies as pressure makers.
@vahlen5281
@vahlen5281 4 ай бұрын
Statista puts the average profit of full-time farming businesses in Germany around 82.000 € for the years 2021/2022, which isn't really that much considering all the work that goes into farming, both physical as well as administrative effort like dealing with the endless German bureaucracy. So your example is not representative, unless the average profit skyrocketed from 2022 to 2023.

The thing is with El Salvador and their crime policy is that when the country is so far in decline and so held back by crime. Liberal democratic rights may need to be withheld to get the country into a safe state. But for countries that don’t have anywhere near as serious a crime problem and are much more developed like Europe, USA etc. such policies would be far more damaging. A country like Haiti could learn from such policies undertaken in El Salvador, the hope is that with long term stability these practices aren’t kept in place as by that point the benefit will not outweigh the cost

The thing about Bukile is: the best way to actually _get shit done_ is totalitarian control, so in the short term totalitarian control always performs better than democracy, however there has to be a reintroduction of democracy after a short while of totalitarian control so that it doesn't get corrupted because while it does get shit done it can also really easily fall off a cliff

About Nayib Bukele, it’s great that what he has been doing has been for the betterment of El Salvador, but I’m still worried. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. He may be a benevolent dictator, but who ever comes into office after him may not be so benevolent and could go down the route that every other dictator in history chose. For now, all we can do is sit and watch how the situation unfolds

My coworker is visiting family in El Salvador right now. He said he never would have gone back home without Bukele's policies making it safe to do so. The compromise for that; however, is that he can never get a tattoo. He said that they are stopping men on the street and telling them to lift their shirts. One tat and you're immediately thrown in prison for being a suspected gang member, regardless if that tattoo is a MS13 logo, or a tiny pink elephant.

I feel like there's bias in the reporting on the situation in Ukraine, namely in February an important event was the fall of Avdiivka. This is a Ukrainian loss, which is hard to not take seriously since the city was on the border between Russian and Ukrainian held Donbas since 2014. The city was basically a fortress and there are no other fortifications on that level for many kilometers deeper into Ukrainian territory. I know this is a pro-western values news channel, but the reporting on the war in Ukraine is not objective enough. Anyway, keep up the good work, pozdrav iz Srbije!

shit brother russians are less fussy in general about moscow ant petersburg politicos, as long as ppl aren't famined, purged or being attacked by germans, it is not seen as tyrrany. ppl think of putin broadly as their choice, a cowboy who tells america to fuck themselves and does whatever the fuck he wants. - am russian, live off and on there and am culturally um russian still despite having the freedom of voting for brandon or an old pervert without reason or incentive to improve anyone's life beyond those who directly and financially support his continued power trip for its own sake. like douglas adams of hitchhiker's guide to the galaxzy put it, anyone capable of being elected president on no account should be allowed to do the job. more than anything it seems like periods in history for russaisn associated without strong central leadership are always terribly hallowed; time of troubles after the Rurikids transitioned into a dynastic Romanov autocracy, period of civil where not one, not two, but three fucking false Dmitri's ... wait, that was another time when three pretender's to the throne claiming to be a dead former prince waged war on the state. Even in the time of fucking stalin, for the 89% of the lowest earning people, like, anyone making what we would call upper-middle class income though not wealthy, were in positions of security never endured or long enjoyed by the majority of russians in their whole span of history, from the kievan rus to the Tsar of all russias. man it sucks to look at the motherland and see a necropolis, dead state, with people who, noble they be, have allowed comfort to disjoint the prerogative of nature which compels a free people to oppose tyranny with violence. problem for most is that it is not seen, nor really felt [in ways that would be understandable as overreach or dramatic as such] that freedom is not theirs despite the same awareness there of what some westerners think is a continuous pins-and-needles affair where one is just one smart ass remark away from being gulag'd for the fuck of it, and beat up, and your dad is fucked on Who Wants to Win some fuckin Ruples. I would wish them a better go of it for the next mad egotist whose penchant for power aligns more with Harun al-Rashid, supporter of the arts, advanced science, had the biggest harem in history, made the bet al-hikma, house of wisdom, etc. Russia at least dessrves a better class of obvious tyrant whose mode of interaction is celebrity delettante with insatiable patriotism and tendency to defend and attak for his subjects. da zavtra ya fook, sry drunk off jello shooterx

You also forget the nuance of the fact that the alleged hiding was due to the fact they broke down his doors at mar-a-lago despite previous interaction showing Trump would let them in to take the documents. Oh and funnily enough, Bidens documents were in stuffy boxes, kept from when he was the vice president of Obama, meaning they were there for a lot longer, in his garage.

The way I see it, El Salvador/Bukele basically had no better option. Murders and chaos were rampant and SOMEONE had to step up and crack down on it. Its not perfect and some innocents were indeed detained but If they spent time being meticulous over the arrests far more innocents would be dead and not much would be better. Bukele is indeed a guy who 'gets shit done' and thats exactly why he's so popular. I think the overall global nigh-worship of democracy has made us blind to its setbacks, namely how long and hard (ayo?) it takes to get shit done. Look at the US, they spend 99% of the time arguing over what to do and 1% on barely doing anything, nothing really gets done and the status quo continues. Its a stagnant system, like having two plumbers endlessly argue over how to fix the toilet while it leaks everywhere. I'd rather have one do a marginally worse job than possible than have no job done at all. It was a tough call, but at least it was a call that actually happened, it had its drawbacks, but its a rare case where the means DO justify the ends, and i just hope the innocents that were swept up in the arrests are eventually given a chance to be freed. I respect Bukele for taking control and actually doing SOMETHING and stopping a majority of needless deaths in the future

Wow I didn't know any of that was going on in El Salvador. Very informative. Unchecked power like that is a bit intense, but those results are equally as intense.

El Salvador's president is quite a success story for the nation. Innocent American viewers need to be reminded that El Salvador is not the US. This is not a situation of use of excessive force. Any gang member in this nation is basically an armed terrorist and this sorta of semi dictatorship approach was the only way to fix the nation and its definetly on a good track, with not only economic and livelyhood improving by insane amounts, but being against conservative policies in the country that hurt people socially. It was basically near impossible to raise a kid safely in El Salvador for an insane amount of time, let alone give them the freedom to express themselves and grow as a person in a country where a gang member will kill you if you "look weird". Now, it might be a widespread possibility.

The thing with El Salvador is, the nation has been on the border of societal collapse for decades - only really kept together by gang war dynamics leading the system rather than the governing bodies instituted by civilians. The nation's only true path to salvation, is to have a heavy-handed yet responsible figure of authority to cut through the layers and reassemble things from scratch. Question is just, will he stay responsible enough to let go of his power when the time comes, when he has done his job, served his purpose? That will be the true test.

Surprised that no-one's said this yet, but Bukele's basically Robot from Invincible (that might be spoilers from the comics) - specifically the good things he did while he was in power: using complete, ruthless, uncompromising control to drag the world into peace & prosperity so unprecedented that the heroes begin questioning whether they should even still be opposing him due to the horrifying means he took to get there

his charts on declining murder rates vs rising incarcerations really make a case for law and order? but at what point will it be an over step? what is an acceptable murder rate and incarceration rate for such a country? he provides basic needs, improves literacy and access to a better life. I guess time will show if he continues to fight the good fight
