In an age of Netflix, Prime, HBO Max, etc, I recognize the convenience these services provide, but I really do miss the days of going to the video store and renting a few movies for the weekend and making a point to watching them with family and friends. There was just something special about doing that.
@gspendlove
@gspendlove Жыл бұрын
We still have family movie night at my house. But you're right. There was just something about having to leave your house and actually go out to get a movie, and knowing you'd better choose wisely or your night was shot. And what was great about video stores was you could get everything there. They sold popcorn, soda, candy as well as the movies. However, modern life does have its compensations. You couldn't lug your TV and VCR with you when you had to go on an emergency trip, or if you had to spend a few days in the hospital. But now I've got my Fire tablet and I can watch a movie wherever there's wifi! Beat that, 1990s!

Kids, if you ever see "12 Monkeys", be like Gene and Roj, and watch it twice. Three times if you have trouble paying attention. The main reason is to connect the beginning and the ending, proving that Cole is a hero. The other reason is the complex, but very tight plot, which requires a full understanding to be appreciated. Possibly Gilliam's greatest film and a personal fave.

I was a faithful watcher from 1980 to the end of Ebert's run. There were only a handful of episodes I missed during all those years. Interesting to look back on their reviews of films that time has either been kind to or have been virtually forgotten. I remember a few worthy movies that didn't deserve their disdain ("Reservoir Dogs," "Brazil," "Splash," and in Roger's corner, "Blue Velvet"), but I always enjoyed watching them talk about something they were clearly so passionate about. They certainly had an impact on me as a developing cinephile.

It was really cool seeing his shock at the turn point, which when you have no idea - a position which is hard to be in with any movie, especially if you see any advertising or media coverage of films etc., but certainly an enviable position for a movie such as this, and a joy that I hope any parent can share by not giving away any clues for films like this. "Menace" is not satirizing the good movies that it mimics, it's using the familiar images from those movies to satirize racist stereotypes. Haha. Yeah, Roger was a little hard on this one, but he was correct. If anyone white was associated with this film, it would instantly be a racist exploitation picture. The only reason we laugh at it is because it's black people making fun of themselves for a change. Eye for an Eye couldn't be toned down I mean they did the best they could by not showing the rape scene but it was what it was it happens every single day almost in this world to shy away from it would Naive it didbother Kiefer though I heard he almost walked off set but the girl who plays the 17 year old convinced him it was ok and he lso I read he had to seek therapy to keep Doob out of his head after t he film wrapped and its more than a vigilante film once he soughtt out the little one Megan the mother has to kill him she has no choice she did try to back out but then all bets were off she could not risk her baby

and I compare it to the Chrissy scene in Jaws not seeing it in a lot of ways is even more terrifying and horrific especially now as an adult with girls of my own (nieces) but i feel as they are mine I watched that part the other night and was literally pulling my hair going Lord Pls make it stop its almost merciful when he hits her on the head with the ice sculpture and what made it worse was her mother on the other end of the phone Helpless and then when the mother is running inthe stopped traffic begging screaming for help and nobody cares its horrendous her crying and whimpering into the phone is unbearable I do not cry at movies and her saying Mommy help or whatever almosst broke me down the other night

This is a great episode! I love From Dusk Till Dawn, 12 Monkeys, Don't be a Menace and Eye for an Eye. They were seriously misguided and unnecessarily harsh on Eye for an Eye (along with Ebert on Don't be a Menace) giving it a negative review based on 1 (admittedly poorly written moment) question that was asked in the film that the film isn't even about. There is a lot of great stuff (and other topics) that were overlooked by them from the film.

Well-done, men. 👍🏻 P.S.: I usually agreed with Ebert over Siskel; here I agree with Siskel as I have actually seen the film and liked it.

That is actually one of my favorite things about 12 Monkeys, that, as he starts believing that he's mentally ill she simultaneously is starting to believe that he actually is a time traveler. Then she thinks they're BOTH mentally ill when she makes that recording...until he recites it back to her verbatim and now they both know that he really is a time traveler. Great movie. But I often wonder if his psychiatrist, now armed with the info on the virus such as who had it and where it came from, was able to get that info to the right people to change history or if this is a time loop that cannot be altered. I have not seen the 12 Monkeys TV show, so maybe they cover that.

Roger rarely ever had a disjointed argument for not liking a film. Agree or disagree, as a critic and writer, mr. Ebert ‘s arguments were usually very well thought out. But, this was the only time where I think he contradicted himself.

I miss Siskel & Ebert so much. The best "across the aisle compare and contrast" film critics. Especially now in the covid era Oh My Fking God I miss the social experience of going to a theater to watch a big cinematic release! Hope to get back to MOVIES sometime soon! Netflix and stay-home torrent downloads is too lonely. What's the point of watching great movies if it's not a shared experience?
