It’s so weird they go from classic Hollywood and name dropping Fred Astaire and Joan Crawford… going straight into 3 Ninjas 😆

LOL Spoken like the one in the duo (Siskel) who had children who he wanted to shield from those movies 😂😂 BTF I did like 3 Ninjas 3 but that's the factor of Jim Varney and leather-clad Loni Anderson as the villain to explain that one.

I believe Being Human was an unfortunate victim of studio interference. Also, for those who haven't seen it, watch Local Hero from the same director.

Studio interference? That explains it... Being Human is hardly recognizable as a film directed by the same man as Gregory's Girl -- except for one shot in the final act, when they're riding the amusement park ride, which is almost identical to the famous merry-go-round shot in Gregory's Girl. I still think Being Human is a must-see film for Robin Williams fans, though. He's quite good in it.

@@Sam-lm8gi Specifically, I believe they cut down the running time of the original cut and they demanded a happy ending.

According to Metacritic, Gene gave the first 3 Ninjas a score of 25, which is the equivalent of one star, but now he is saying he liked it. I wonder if this is a mistake.

They spoil Dream Lover pretty badly in that overview of the plot. Sometimes the movie reviews really reveal too much. It's a very strange, interesting psychodrama for adults: dreams, desire, sex, jealousy, gaslighting/manipulation, trust and betrayal. Lots of subtle detail in the plot that makes it worth thinking about long after its courageously abrupt and matter-of-fact resolution (a lot of people will hate how it chooses to resolve the story but I loved it!). While it's not a straight-up thriller, fans of 90s thrillers should still check it out.

They spoil Kika too. It's lesser Almodóvar, I agree, but it didn't deserve to have one of the final scenes (Abril holding the gun on Coyote and saying "You're a serial killer") included in a review show, as if that's mere setup instead of a major revelation.

Ok that 3 Ninjas review gave me a good chuckle. Both are saying its bad but I love how Roger is trying to as he would say "Give the movie its day in court," by giving heads up for younger audiences yet Gene gives him hell for it.

Being Human might have worked if they took its plot seriously. The concept is workable - after all, DW Griffith used something very similar for Intolerance, and Buster Keaton parodied the concept in his first feature, The Three Ages. But they didn't, and, frankly, it's Robin Williams' presence that really killed the film. Williams was a good actor, but he tends to drop the ball when he turns serious. He doesn't fit in any of the timeframes in the film, not even the present, and I seem to remember the settings themselves weren't convincing in the slightest. I didn't believe one minute of the film, and that's a shame, because it could have been so much better.

I haven't seen BH but I have seen Williams giving compelling, dramatic performances in films such as Awakenings, One Hour Photo, and Insomnia.

@@ricardocantoral7672 I was fascinated by One Hour Photos - it's definitely not like anything he ever did before. Awakenings kinda bored me, in fact. And I never saw Insomnia, but I've heard he's very good. But I still think Williams floundered a lot when he tried to be serious like in Patch Adams and The Bicentennial Man -- the last I actively loathed because I thought it was a terrible adaptation and that robot suit took me out of the movie every time.
@ricardocantoral7672
@ricardocantoral7672 10 ай бұрын
@@kali3665 I was very moved by Awakenings because I saw myself in Robin Williams' character and I think the relationship between him and Bob DeNiro essentially made it a love story. As for Insomnia, yeah, that's a must watch and Robin gave a great, creepy performance. I haven't seen Bicentennial Man but I have seen Patch Adams and it was awful, sanctimonious, drivel. The real Patch Adams couldn't stand that movie.
