The biggest shame is that the actress who played Ron's mother did not receive a best supporting actress nomination (and she should have won). The scene at home after a drunk Ron comes home and the mom cannot let go of this idea of an infallible America is perfection.

Yes that is a well done scene when Kovic comes home and greets the neighbors and his family. There is a similar scene in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946).

I agree that the main problem with "Always" was the fire-fighting background; it should have been set during WW2, as the original was. I have zero problem with Dreyfuss and Hunter together. And the dialogue was supposed to be old-fashioned.

I loved Tango and Cash and actually watched it last year on some streaming service. But in retrospect, I see I had first viewed it through a kids eyes at the theater so I won't die on that hill to defend it. But I'm glad they liked Born on the Fourth of July which is one of Tom Cruises best movies.

yeah i saw tango and cash as an adult and thought it sucked. teri hatcher looked great in it though. Born on the Fourth of July is a great movie but hard to watch. When Cruise's character gets back home with his wheelchair and has the drunken fight with his mother as the neighbors watch is so uncomfortable. It really nails the way some people viewed the world (im talking about the mother).

I loved the film Always except for the miscast Brad Johnson. And while I wouldn't have set the movie in "present day" it still worked for me.

First. Siskel kind of meanders around a bit here. Was he sick at this point? Anyway, not a particularly fun episodebut i love ebert's take: "Tango & Cash is a waste of valuable electricity. I think they should have just not made this movie. There's nothing there that is worth anybody's time to see. It's a No. Brainer. Movie." Tell us what you really think haha.

Gene was having an off day, I guess, because he had another 8 or 9 years before he got sick.

Unlikely. This was filmed in 1989 and he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in 1998. Almost a decade later. Brain Cancer is not a slow growing cancer and symptoms manifest within a few years. Probably not until 1997.
