Siskel & Ebert Classics - 2/27/99 - Remembering Gene Siskel

This is the episode that ran the weekend after Gene's passing. Obviously it's been uploaded many times before, but I wanted to put up my personal copy for posterity. Includes all original commercials (this is a Directv recording off KTLA in Los Angeles).
After this, the show was never the same for me, as I know it wasn't for many others, so I ended my weekly recordings shortly thereafter (frankly one of the reasons I am missing the later 97-99 years was that I taped over them years back. I never really thought about it then, but in hindsight, it was difficult to watch Gene's sickness and some of the shows where he participated by phone. It was remarkable to see him keep going but it was not the easiest thing to witness week to week).
Watching Gene and Roger every week took me from my very earliest memories of ever watching TV through to graduating from college and just a little bit before I met my wife. I feel both of them were a huge part of my life and these shows not only function today as a tribute to them, but also the movies themselves -- the marketplace of which was in a VERY different place back then (as these episodes attest...how wonderful it is to go back and discover some truly buried treasures in them!).
I do have a few more episodes to upload here and there but as you can tell, mostly we're reaching the end of the run of my own S&E archive. I thank all of you for joining me on this journey and I know, from reading the comments I've read over last the year or two, many of us miss both of them dearly -- which is why keeping these shows alive is so important (besides being so entertaining still to watch!).
As a reminder, if you're looking for the latest home video reviews -- from Blu-Rays of classic catalog titles to the latest releases -- be sure to check out my own review site at www.andyfilm.com

Gene died from the same brain tumor that I have. I was supposed to have died in 2020, but it will definitely be the end of me. Cancer killed Ebert as well. Words cannot express my hatred for cancer. I love movies, and these two were my movie gurus from when they were on PBS and their show was called Sneak Previews, all the way until their deaths. There are a lot of KZfaq movie reviewers, but no one will ever come close to matching the duo of Siskel and Ebert.

I don't know if I -cried-, but I was definitely in shock. It didn't seem real. It was probably one of the first times a celebrity death affected me. Sadly, I have to admit that I didn't follow S&E series as much after he passed. Of course, I went back years later and caught up on the episodes I missed. The second half of the 1998-1999 season was truly weird due to all the guest hosts.

So wonderful. I met Gene in Chicago once and he was the NICEST man ever. I was a 21 year old Gate Agent for American Airlines at the time it was my first day on the job. Sooo many angry faces and grumbling from people trying to get on their flight. And Gene had a ticket I didn’t know how to process in this archaic system AA used at the time. It was that eternally long 60 seconds (I remember this like it was yesterday.) waiting for a supervisor. He just smiled and said “You’re doing a great job.” I’m 50 yrs old sitting in a Starbucks typing this and remembering how kind and peaceful he was in that 3-4 minutes he was stuck with me. In my time on this planet, Gene Siskel was the kindest “stranger” I have ever met. This was in 1995. We would lose him only about 4 years later. I can’t help but feel emotional looking at his kind smile and his intellectual and lovely energy. You see it only takes a minute to be kind. He was such a great man making a young person just out of the military feel human and valued. YOU will always be valued and remembered Mr Siskel. Rest in Power Sir.

This made me really sad. I'm german so I didn't grew up watching them or even knowing them, just the last 15 years or so I repeatedly stumbled across the two and their written reviews here and there. Just the last one and a half weeks or so I've been binge watching all these clips I can find on youtube from their shows and it's so entertaining, smart and funny watching them talk about all the movies I know, hate, love and grew up with. RIP both of you. BTW how epic did Siskel look with dat mustache :D

Such a shame, too soon. I do wonder at times what he would have thought of a lot of certain movies that came out after his passing, such Star Wars Prequels, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Dark Knight films, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Last Samurai, Avatar, Jason Bourne movies, I clearly could keep naming more movies. And sadly we will never know 😭

I grew up with these two and felt a certain loss, when they both passed. I loved both as critics. But, I had a certain affection for roger, because, while I respected and learned the beauty of foreign and independent films from both, I felt roger, even more than Gene, could appreciate a great commercial film.

🙁 I am in my thirties and I remember seeing Siskel and Ebert printed on my old VHS boxes that I still own. Despite it being over and done with, it is heartbreaking that Gene died way too soon and when Roger died years later. The world needs Siskel and Ebert more than ever! I realize that neither critic can return, however we can remember them a lot when both critics were alive as much as we would love to.

Thanks for getting this out there again. I am sure I saw the program when it was broadcast in 1999 but, I admit, do not remember. I rarely missed Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel starting around 1981, when I became a viewer of their P.B.S. show SNEAK PREVIEWS, to the bitter end in '99.

@andyfilm - A very nice write up above. I echo your sentiments. I started watching S&E around 1987. I was only 9 or 10 at the time. This was initially the only opportunity I had to see clips of movies I wasn't old enough to watch yet but, over time, I came to appreciate these guys for their thoughtful film reviews. They would take the time to review a Pauly Shore film with the same level of consideration that they would a Scorsese or Fellini film. They were on my local Boston ABC affiliate at 7:30 on Saturday evenings. If my friends wanted me to come out on Saturday nights, they knew I was unavailable until 8:00. There have never been any film critics like these two and I hope younger folks who were born after S&E have the opportunity to come across your channel and see how the pros did it (and did it right). RIP to the legends!

Thanks William I appreciate it. That kind of criticism as you wrote is in short supply today -- most online reviews seem designed for cutesy quips that get plastered on the "Tomato Meter" -- and of course the programming being commented upon is definitely not the same (in a bad way) either.

I was a WV transplant to Chicago after college, and who loved these guys, especially Roger. This lovely tribute shows why I thought so much of Roger, and to whom I most closely relate. We were nearly the same age, both came up in small cities, both settled in Chicago, and to whose sensibilities I closely related. And though we lived a few blocks from each other, we never met.

You can watch over time where they didn't care much for one another and then to love and respect. It's really emotional to watch ebert talk about his partner he didn't want that became a friend. Feels like we got to be part of their world. It's something we are really missing from television, people with honest opinions and no political agenda.
