So they got into a heavy disagreement over "The Doors," then Siskel talked about the Doors concert on Laserdisc, then they continued arguing about the movie after that. That was great.

No, they were both right. Some people take acid and have a good trip and a some have a bad trip. Siskel enjoyed the ride. Ebert had a bad trip. He said it was a brilliant film that he can’t recommend. I suggest you go read Ebert’s full review on his website.

I think Roger had negative feelings from “The Doors” because of his own battles with addiction. He uses the word “empathy” in his arguement. Tells you everything.

Good insight. I am sure there are other movies where a main character self-destructs with drugs or alcohol that Roger nevertheless liked. I also suspect if he had watched The Doors on a different day, or revisited it a few years later, he might have a different take. In any event, Val Kilmer was robbed. He should have gotten nominations from the Academy and the Golden Globes for this performance, which is at least as good as Gary Busey in the Buddy Holly Story or Joaquin Phoenix in Walk The Line. Actually, the only actor I can think of who did a better job recreating a music icon is Jamie Foxx in Ray, but Ray is not nearly as good a movie as The Doors was.

Morrison an incredible paradox, but that's life for some people. I say watch it and take it in as you will. I am a Doors fan and have been for 50 plus years. As Jimbo said "the future is uncertain and the end is always near." And, "when the music is over turn out the lights." That's it. Except let's go get some tacos. Later.

I sat thru the Doors movie when it came out in 1991. I was a junior in high school and my friends and I all rushed to see the film on opening weekend. We agreed with Roger. A great Val Kilmer performance, but you will have more fun listening to the music instead!

It was a bit of a shock for me as well. It was too sad, on many levels. I think of it as a cautionary tale of how not to live. I don’t regret seeing it, but I don’t rewatch it either.

I've never seen a music biopic that I liked. They're always either gut-wrenchingly corny or just downright historically revisionist-heavy, or both. Oliver Stone's "The Doors" was no different, really. But as stated previously by Roger--and almost everybody who watched the film--Val Kilmer actually did a fantastic job as Jim Morrison. Any actor or actress who is tasked with playing like an "edgy" artist or musician really has their work cut out for them: It's extremely easy to turn in an egregiously cringeworthy performance.

Wow! I love it when they get into catfights and they got into a big one over The Doors. I can't believe Ebert would praise the film for all its strengths but withhold a recommendation because he found the subject matter depressing.

He tended to be harder on directors who were as talented as Stone. Another example is Stone's Alexander, which would have just been mediocre if someone less talented had made it, but which was godawful compared to Stone's best work. Ebert nominated that one as worst of the year. (For the record, I would have given The Doors a thumbs up.)

Andy, thanks for this, the infamous Doors review. Always sided more with Roger but in this case… I mean come on aren’t most bio pics made about self-destructive, unsavory characters? There’s “troubled-star” movies - both fictional and non - all over the place and its point is to show you a tragic figure. So unless you just didn’t like the film as a whole, kind of a weird soft pass on his part.

Not sure if I understand Ebert’s critique or The Doors. I agree that Morrison as portrayed in the film was thoroughly unpleasant but the movie wasn’t, if that makes sense. Because a person or character is unlikable in a movie doesn’t necessarily count out the movie for being liked. I know these are completely different films but take for instance The War Zone. This is a movie about a family that becomes ruined by incest, rape and molestation, by the hands of the father throughout the movie. It is a painful watch, particularly one scene of rape, yet I believe Ebert gave it 4 stars. I appreciate the film and glad I watched it, but I never want to watch it again. Or a documentary called Just Melvin, Just Evil. He gave it an extremely positive review, and yet the guy that it’s about is probably one of the worst people to have ever been born on this earth. The Doors by comparison is a much bearable watch, even having me want to watch it multiple times. Not sure I understand his point.

The Doors scene where Meg Ryan's character is excoriating Jim for taking "low grade acid" is clipped so it looks as though she is mad at him for his behavior. She is angry because he will "peak" sooner than her, because she intends to get high, too. The cutting of this clip is disingenuous, but I can guess why they did that.
