Over the Edge.... One of the best movies of the '70s. Used to be on HBO all the time in the early '80s and my brother and friends were all really into it.

As a kid who grew up in the 70's, Over the Edge is the most realistic movie about that era of teenagers I remember, along with Dazed abd Confused. They didn't mention it, but Over the Edge was also Matt Dillon's first movie and he steals every scene he's in. Incredibly narturalistic, realistic performances from these kids. I had that exact same kind of argument with my parents all the time. It also had a great soundtrack, including introducing Cheap Trick's "Surrender" and the Stairsteps "Ooh Child"

Yup. I grew up in the 70s, too.

Over the Edge had a huge impact on Gen Xers. In fact the video for Smells Like Teen Spirit was based on it.

Um, Malcolm McDowell isn't exactly playing a "Victorian detective" in Time After Time, Rog, but okay....

Also, despite having some funny moments, I don't consider Time After Time to be a comedy!

The Seduction of Joe Tynan was great - Melvyn Douglas was better in this film than in Being There, and Barbara Harris was superb too. Rich Kids brings back memories for me, and Over the Edge was fascinating too.

They don't even mention that Matt Dillon was in Over the Edge. Every one I know watches the movie for that reason.

Why would they mention it? He hadn't become a star yet, it was his first movie.

The mother in the clip from Rich Kids is the same woman who played the team owner in Slap Shot, in the brief but hilarious scene where Paul Newman tells her off and insults her son.

I wish they would have continued with the Dog of The Week segment, or something similar, on their subsequent review shows. God knows there is never a shortage of lousy movies.

See? Gay Life being "No Longer Shocking" isn't a recent thing. Modern Life doesn't own the rights to anything, really.

La Cage is a wonderful comedy. It spawned a string of increasingly poor sequels, but the remake 'The Bird Cage' is dismal by comparison. I think it was only made because people in America don't like reading subtitles and the producers felt that if the film was in English it would be a bigger hit. Yeah, no one started saying the JFK line Gene predicted would carry over. Sorry. I think it got eclipsed by 'IF I said you had a beautiful body would you hold it against me?' This Alan Alda film would have worked better without Streep and with Kathleen Turner. She would have been far more believable in a role where she was a focused woman who exudes sexuality even when she is not trying. Streep--talented as she is with accents--does not exude any kind of sexuality.

"The woman who wrote this film must not like men" - this is exactly why I disliked Gene Siskel! He can't possibly see that maybe many men aren't good people and she's capturing it. Siskel is wrong so much.

That was his opinion. There’s no wrong or right in film criticism. Just opinions you agree or disagree with.

Real Life is the movie that makes me see that Albert Brooks is overrated.

All the movies that he wrote and stars in are awful. Try sitting through Defending Your Life or Mother for later examples. Horrid. He does a decent job as a character actor in Out of Sight and Drive though.

@@KZfaq-tiedYou forgot Lost in America, one of the funniest movies ever made. Defending Your Life is eminently watchable. Albert Brooks got an amazing performance out of Meryl Streep.

I think it’s wonderful. It’s a perfect indictment of reality tv twenty years before it even existed.
I wish I could change THIS fast! 🤣
