One of the most underrated performances and movies of the 80s.
@stopthephilosophicalzombie90172 жыл бұрын
When Walken wakes up to find he has lost the love of his life I thought my heart was going to explode. Such a powerful performance, and it could happen to anyone. This is a very underrated film. The ending is a bit weak, but still a great movie. They just don't make them like this anymore.

Martin Scorsese had a lot respect for Cronenberg's work, he also complimented Walken's performance in The Dead Zone.

An immaculate trifecta of Stephen King, David Cronenberg, and Christopher Walken. Thumbs up indeed.

Walken had such an unearthly beauty when young.

A quiet and perfect little horror story. The adaptation of King's novel trims off the fat and leaves a solid scenario of a terrible trick played on Johnny. Walken's sarcastic delivery regarding God's gift to him is wonderful. Later in the film, his line, " The ICE is gonna BREAK! " is hair-raising! Great support from Herbert Lom, Tom Skerritt, Martin Sheen, Anthony Zerbe and Brooke Adams. Directed by David Cronenberg. A real gem!

I remember seeing this Siskel & Ebert review and as a kid and it freaked me out. I made a point not to watch this movie until I finally saw it in college once on a "movie night." It became one of my favorite movies. I think I liked it so much because it was less gory (except for one scene) than I thought it was going to be, especially for an early-1980's horror movie, and it had those cool scenes, like the house fire and the murder of Alma, where his psychic ability allowed him to be "present" in his visions. Walken played the frail, confused, vulnerable Johnny perfectly using his power reluctantly at first and then seeing it as a gift that he used to bring down serial killers and megalomaniacs bent on world-wide destruction.

I choice that weekend. To see The Dead Zone or Underfire both open on same day. I pick The Dead Zone because was fan of Stephen King. To be honest both films great I saw Underfire later on vhs. It was my first Stephen King movie to see on the big screen thought it was excellent. Christopher Walken was terrific in the role of Johnny Smith. The movie was very close to the book. A great Stephen King movie.

1:10 - OK... how the f__k did Walken do THIS scene...?!
@PeterEvansPeteTakesPictures Жыл бұрын
I think it's forced perspective, the same way they did the breakfast scenes between Bilbo and Gandalf in Lord of the Rings. You have a smaller scale part of the bed a lot closer to the camera, on fire, and you have Walken's part a metre back from it, positioned so it looks like it's part of the same bed. It's really tricky to pull off and you have to get depth of focus, lighting and model-work exactly right (even the quilt needs to be perfectly scaled) but it's an old trick that's used to superb effect in this case.
@SanFranDentist94301 Жыл бұрын
Stunt material for the bed and covers. (Think Pink Floyd album cover) And if you look you can tell that the lower legs are fake. Walken's torso is in a hole in the mattress. A pyro coordinator on deck with an extinguisher in case things go wrong. As stunts go not the most dangerous, but impressive.

Obviously, Christopher Walken shined through in this movie, but it also had a strong talented cast as well. Also, the fact that the core of the movie is a love story made it one of a kind. It's a movie you can watch multiple times and find something unique about it that you've never noticed before.
@maskedmarvyl47743 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed this movie, but I've always had an issue with the last scene shown here. There was no point of showing her breasts before he murdered her. That was very cheaply gratuitous. It added nothing but a cheap sadistic thrill to the scene, and made it feel like murder porn.
@stopthephilosophicalzombie90172 жыл бұрын
I agree. This movie was so tasteful with the love between Brooke Adams' and Walken's characters, and then they go and cheapen the whole thing with this pointless nudity. I guess it was supposed to show how depraved and evil this guy was, but I didn't like it either.
@davec67802 жыл бұрын
I guess the reason that I don't have a problem with it is that I do not in any way condider it as a "thrill" or "thrilling." It is called being a grownup.

@@davec6780 , I'm glad that you don't condider it a thrill. It's very grown up of you to say.

It shows that he was a sex killer not only a serial killer. And visual the vulnerability of her breasts on that cold day is jarring. N the story Frank Dodd kills a little girl about 10-12 years old, that's what brings Johnny on the case.
