Thank you for another great comparison! To start, The Dead Zone is one of my top four Stephen King novels (1. The Stand, 2. The Shining 3. The Dead Zone, 4. 'Salem's Lot). I read it back when I was in High School and ate the book up, I couldn't get enough of it. I was a total horror buff back then but, I couldn't stop reading about this man's tragic life. I was so affected that, after the last sentence "same old Johnny", touched my heart so greatly, I actually mourned him for over a day. In my opinion, still King's best written character of all time - one to the best I ever met through the written word, period. That being said, I completely understand your criticisms of the movie. I have major issues with it, as well. The only aspect of the movie that warms my heart when comparing to the book is, I totally saw Christopher Walken as Johnny Smith, and his casting is one of my favorites, ever. You know when you can just see someone as a character? Christopher Walken is that, for me, when it comes to Johnny Smith.

Thanks for sharing! I'm going to read Salem's Lot when the new movie comes out but it keeps getting delayed! And Walken was definitely great as Johnny Smith.

One of King’s earliest masterworks & Cronenberg really delivered the goods with the adaptation. If you think about it, this set the groundwork for his more dramatic period in the 2000s-2010s. Christopher Walken owned the role of Johnny and his emotional moments really hit hard (especially when Johnny awakes and finds out that his former flame has moved on and he just turns away and we see how much it impacts him). Even with the changes that had to be made, it’s still pretty terrifying with the serial killer subplot and the ending where Johnny knows he’ll have to die to stop Stilson (Martin Sheen was a perfect scumbag here)

Yeah so true! And I agree the acting was great by all including Martin Sheen.

@@WhytheBookWins I love the reaction he gives after Walken in his final moments tells him “you’re finished” with that smirk. He truly took the piss out of him there 😆

The character, Sonny Elliman, Stillson's henchman, doesn't suddenly have a moment of conscience to not follow Stillson's order to stop the photographer. He betrays him because he knows Stillson's done. His power is gone and Sonny doesn't want to go down with him.
@WhytheBookWins

Oh that's an interesting interpretation! His expression made me think he personally felt Stillson had stooped too low but you may be right in your assessment. Thanks for sharing!

@@WhytheBookWins Yeah, that might've been the intention. It seems like it would fit that character in a more realistic way. I love the personalities of Stephen King's characters. They're so dark and terrifying. I tend to prefer the movies a bit more, because they edit some unnecessary details, as I see it, but I need to read more to be fair. You had a good opinion here. I'm subscribing now and I'll check out the other reviews on your channel. Thank you.

Great comparison. Really enjoyed it. Have you thought about comparing the original The Exorcist novel (William Peter Blatty) against The 1973 movie ?. Keep up the great work.

Maybe for the goon point of view, there are people which are competitors and others that are bystanders, and he's only ok victimizing competitors. Few criminals stick to a code, even the ones that SAY they do, but a baby was too much even for him. I dunno, not super-realistic but made the character interesting. In any case, thank you for this! I was talking about The Dead Zone just a few weeks back, what a pleasant coincidence!

You asked for a good Stephen King book movie review. I would love to see you review Stephen kings, the body which was the movie stand by me. They were both done so well and I remember hearing that was one of the few adaptions that Stephen King said was spot-on.

Oh Stand by Me is easily one of the greatest King adaptations; it’s proved Rob Reiner could bring the drama and led to him directing Misery afterwards when King was completed with their prior collaboration

@@WhytheBookWins Another one to consider could be The Dark Half, which also has an adaptation from another "classic" horror director, George A. Romero.

It is hard to compare movies and books because they serve two different functions at times for instance LA Cofidential is a great movie with 7 20 minutes in one showing (a 2 hour and 20 minute movie) whereas the book was something I kept by my bed to read for maybe 20 minutes a night before sleeping but I would pick the book over the movie whereas I loved The Postman Rings Twice but Jessica Lange so sexy in the movie you could never fantasize in your mind a better Cora and of course the one and only Jack Nicholson as John the Great Great novella can't beat their performances it's hard to do😂!!!!!

I'm very torn with this one. I first saw the movie when I was a kid. And I've watched it many times since. I read the book about 3 or 4 years ago. It's probably my favorite Stephen King book so far. It's just such a sad story. But I was really into it and couldn't put it down. So for me, I guess I don't know what I like better. Both the book and movie are great.

Great book and movie. Did you see the tv show The Dead Zone 2002 for this book it is awesome. KZfaq recommend your channel to me. Do you always support the book version. I can give good examples where the movie is ten times better than the book. for example The Running Man 1987 movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger which is also based on a Stephan King book is 10 times better than the original book. Another example is The Count Of Monte Cristo 2002 movie is much better than the original book. Another example is the movie Limitless 2012 is much better than the original book.

@@WhytheBookWins I see the book has been too complex and having allot of side plots which are useless. I think the movie summarized the important parts and made allot of changes that made the story better like the all time where Edmond was in prison with the priest was expanded and made more exciting and emotional in the movie than in the book where I think it was only had one paragraph if I remember correctly. Also I don't like the bad ending in the book. I highly recommend for you to read the John Grisham Novels which were made to allot of famous movies like The Firm with Tom Cruise or The Rainmaker with Matt Damon. I also recommend you a great book just like The Count Of Monte Cristo (not for a review since just for fun since I don't think this book unfortunately has a movie at least not an English speaking one I think there is a French mini series) called Mathias Sandorf by famous author Jules Verne. This book is not as famous as Jules Verne other book and yet I think this book is amazing and enjoy reading over and over. I wish they would make an Hollywood movie out of it because it is a great adventure story just like The Count Of Monte Cristo and it was written around the same time.
