Siskel and Ebert reviews a Disney American animated musical drama film, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in June 21, 1996. Featuring the voice cast members of Tom Hulce, Demi Moore, Tony Jay, Kevin Kline, Paul Kandel, as well as Charles Kimbrough, Jason Alexander and Mary Wickes as Victor, Hugo, and Laverne respectively.
It is the 34th Disney animated feature film and the seventh produced during the Disney Renaissance, and it is also loosely based on the 1831 novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. The plot centers on Quasimodo, the disabled bell-ringer of Notre Dame, and his struggle to stand up to his ableist father Claude Frollo, who also wants to commit genocide against Paris' Romani population.
Both of them loved this movie, when Gene gives a marginal thumbs up for memorable the characters, especially the depth of Quasimodo, the drawings, and some beautiful songs, and Roger gives thumbs way up, as he considers that it is one of the best Disney pictures of 1996 since "Beauty and the Beast" , while he still liked "Aladdin" and Pocahontas".
To this day, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is considered to be one of Disney's darkest animated films due to its mature subject matter such as Infanticide, lust, damnation, antiziganism, genocide, and sin, despite the changes made from the original source material in order to ensure a G rating from the MPAA.
I totally agree Gene and Roger as well, I really loved this movie A whole lot. It's one of my favorite Disney animated films. I thought it is truly powerful. The story was strong, and the emotional is so important. I really like Quasimodo more. He's my favorite main character. I thought he was kind, shy, nice, and lonely, and he really needs is freedom. Then he's brave, careful strong-confident and, do-the-right-thing, and I was so moved, and touching. And I do believe that Quasi is a very special person. Anyway, it is a great animated film, as it will always be in my heart. Thumbs way up for me on "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)

P.S., this was Wickes' final acting performance as she died seven months before its release, at the age of 85. Jane Withers provided Laverne's remaining dialogue for the film. R.I.P., Mary Wickes. (1910-1995) 😥

Roger here and, moreso in his review, talks about how the animation really shows you things that just wouldn't be the same, or even possible (at least at the time), in a live action movie. He highlights Quasi maneuvering around the cathedral specifically. Seeing this now, I can't help but think that the 2 Spiderverse movies have accomplished the same thing.

While I don't agree that "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is the best Disney film since "Beauty and the Beast" because I love "Aladdin" and "The Lion King" just as much as the other two. I'm glad that Roger Ebert loved "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". It's absolutely one of the most underrated Disney masterpieces of all time! The animation and the music are both some of the all time best!

When Rodger said "Oh thumbs way up for me! I loved this movie!", Well he took the words right out of my mouth. I love this movie too so my thumb is not even marginally up for this movie. It's so well made. I admit when I was younger my sister loved it and I didn't appeal to it very much. But then when I was maybe about 15, I hooked up our old VCR player to the TV in my bedroom and I started to go through all of my VHSs and I put this movie on and I fell completely in love with it ever since

Easily one of the most underrated disney films. It’s more serious subject matter and darker execution turned a lot of small minds away. It may not have the pep of the other 90’s renaissance Disney films, but it has the most substance, depth, and scale.

It's fun to see this again, I saw the film numerous times at the theater. SURPRISED they didn't notice the Silent film references in the film. There's a lot of deep cuts, it's a very bold ambitious film. Too bad they have less than 4 minutes to talk about it, good stuff.

I went into the theater with my expectations definitely low for The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. I was amazed by the movie. Great songs. GREAT story treatment. Great animation. It’s remarkably good, it’s Walt Disney doing Victor Hugo, staying true to the Disney family ethos without seriously breaking Hugo’s dramatic themes. It’s an amazing creative achievement. Great songs overall, and my favorite is God Help The Outcasts.

On paper, a family friendly Hunchback movie should have been a misfire. But it ends up being one of the better adaptations of the novel and one of the strongest late 90s Disney movies. The gargoyles stuff got too silly at times tho.

I feel like this is Disney's magnum opus when it comes to their 2-d movies. It's also crazy that if this movie came out today it would probably be called "woke" which is just so so sad that tolerance and acceptance of people who are different then you is a considered a bad thing by certain people

This movie came out when I was going through that transition of childhood to teenager, and therefore was looking for entertainment with a sharper edge as well as still not understanding why villains fall in love, so I didn’t like it so much (except for Hellfire). Even today I find it rather clunky. I did however love Frollo. That performance was magnificent.
