Agreed. It took horrible people who were career criminals and made them cool enough you wanted to watch a movie about them. Henry Hill sold drugs and stole from tractor trailers and corrupted college students with the famous point shaving case and yet actor Ray Liotta made him charming and funny. He was a crook and drug addict. Goodfellas was a masterful work of art as a movie.

It's funny, I consider 1990 the best year for movies ever. I count no less than 39 "watchable" movies. I was always an Ebert guy anyway. Siskel was often wrong. Taking Care of Business and Men At Work are two of my all time favorite cult comedies. To Gene's credit though, 1990 was the first year of mass sequels. That's not that bad of a thing though because we got Terminator 2 in 1991.

Well, they and others have been complaining about such things for at least as long as I have lived. So, I am not sure about that. There will always be ups and downs. Before you ask, no, off the top of my head I can't name a number of great movies from the last 10 years but I probably do not watch enough new movies for that. I might bw wrong, but I sometimes think that the big commercial movies make too much noise and might therefore give the impression that only that kind of movie gets mostly released these days. I had that impression for some time and lost interest in new movies for some time. Edit: That being said, I'd still like to hear their opinion on today's movies 😉

I believe that the passing of Siskel and Ebert has made way, in the last 15 years, to a no-holds-bar inundation of some of the LAZIEST, ADOLESCENT, MEDIOCRE MOVIES pandering to audiences. The flood gates are wide open because there are no gatekeepers. Siskel and Ebert called people on their BS. Many Film critics are absolutely unqualified now. They are at best, online blogger geeks who obsess over comic books / graphic novels, pop culture and television shtick. In terms of making actual art, the accessibility to movies as an influence is like never before. But the horror of that is that filmmakers are making mere simulacrum not movies, especially "INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS." There are very few original, unique voices with something actual to say. And let's not even mention how the rise of streaming television series has added to these issues where it's not even stories anymore, it's called "content."

That, and if your lead actor is black or gay… You are a racist or homophobic if you don’t like the movie. People can’t accept a movie can be bad, regardless of the lead. May they be black, white, gay, straight, a bad movie is simply a bad movie, but Critics can’t be honest anymore because if they are, they’ll risk losing their jobs.

It is funny to read comments especially when people weigh in complaining about Goodfellas featuring toxic masculinity as if everyone is ready for a diverse musical about gangsters featuring a group of social influencers. That said if Millers Crossing is not on your list and Dances with Wolves is ...... well I guess you also think The White Ltous season 2 was edgy and were surprised by the ending ( and I usually like Mike White) . Sarcasm aside it is nice to look back and see that they were right about films like Mountains Over the Moon, The Grifters and Monsieur Hire and I do recall that I was stunned by the power and brutality of Last Exit to Brooklyn . I could not help but go back to check to see what Asian films were released in 1990 which left me surprised that they did not mention JuoDou. For those who have not seen the 2002 film "Narc" it is worthwhile if only because it was the film in which both Ray Liotta and Jason Partic ( After Dark, My Sweet) effectively resurrected their reputations as serious actors.

"I only gave 4 stars to eight movies this year." One of them was Dick Tracy. I'm not at all disagreeing with this choice because I love this film, just pointing it out.

The Freshman was basically one-joke based on Brando looking like himself. Awakenings is my mom when her thyroid is low.

There were more great movies in 1990 than the last 10 years of films. Goodfellas Dances with Wolves Jacobs's Ladder Misery Edward Scisssorhands Freshman Ghost I could go on of still very watchable films.

Glad that Gene had Avalon on his list. Great film that deserves more attention. Armin Mueller Stahl gave an Oscar worthy performance. One mistake though - appealing as he is, Aidan Quinn is simply not believable as Jewish man.

Gene complained 1990 was a terrible year with Goodfellas premiering. He would roll over in his grave if he knew what was released this year. Two gentleman, with often oposing view, but with a pure love for their craft, working in synergy. No one has ever replaced them.
