These films include: Another 48 Hrs, Child's Play 2, Courage Mountain, Desperate Hours, Funny About Love, Ghost Dad, Graffiti Bridge, Jetsons: The Movie, Loose Cannons, Night of the Living Dead, RoboCop 2, Short Time, Sibling Rivalry, The Guardian, The Nutcracker Prince and Wild Orchid.

Fun Fact: The work jim henson was most proud of was the costumes and animatronics they created for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. For their time the were the most complex systems his creature shop had ever designed and built.

It was triumphant work! Labyrinth and especially Dark Crystal are the better films, but TMNT 1 was and still is impressive. Edit: they were too hard on it. It’s got atmosphere, style, cutting edge puppetry, and some fun choreography. It’s the SEQUEL with vanilla ice that is more like MTV.

I agree with Gene on the subject of remakes. Why remake a classic movie, when the original was already a great film. Why not instead remake films that had potential, but just missed the mark, whether through bad casting or acting, bad directing or just a weak script. There are surely plenty of these. Remakes are rarely if ever as good as the original, so all they do is leave a bad taste in ones mouth. One of the biggest culprits in this category has to be the Get Carter remake, with Silvester Stallone of all people. The original Michael Caine film is a true British classic, whilst the remake is embarrassingly awful. Who the hell thought that was a good idea?

Even worse is when they remake a film that has NO potential, like Gloria (Sharon Stone).

To give you an idea of how bad a year this was, none of these films won the Razzie for worst picture of the year, and this was a year that two pictures tied for the dishonor.

Yeah but to be fair 1990 also had a shitload of awesome films at the same time. 90's were a big transition for Hollywood.

The reason Ebert was complaining about lousy kids movies is just a few years before we had stuff like The Dark Crystal and Secret of NIMH which were made for children but not afraid to challenge their little brains.

why's Charlie doing all the wild skiing tricks if the girl's life is in the balance? why would even an incredibly-skilled skier take those kind of showboating risks if his little friend died because he made a mistake? or, even moreso, why would even an amazing skier risk THAT kind of horrible injury if he's doing them way up in The Alps? wouldn't breaking your leg or something up there mean certain death? it would? yeah, I thought so, too.

No. He said in his review that he was torn between his head and his heart because his head said that it was a well-made movie for what it was but his heart found the subject matter off-putting. But he definitely praised the cinematography and the execution of the story elements, especially the ending. You can always say that Pulitzer Prize winning film critic Roger Ebert had nice things to say about Child's Play 2.

Loose Cannons is rather indefensible but Hackman is so likable and his performance so effortless he makes the film worth watching (once)

They're so disparaging and dismissive towards the horror genre in general. It's annoying. The Guardian and Night of the Living Dead '90 are both very good horror films. In the case of the latter, they ask "why did George A. Romero deem it necessary to remake a horror film which was perfectly good to begin with?". If they knew their film history, they'd know it's because due to a copyright screw up, the original was instantly within the public domain, meaning that the filmmakers never saw a dime from that film, hence Romero wanting to remake it and cash in on his own creation. Besides, the remake is excellent and I'm not alone in considering it superior to the original. Also, lowering The Guardian to "the movie about a killer tree" is a gross simplification of the film's narrative, just as it would be to describe The Evil Dead the same way.

I love the remake too.. even if the first one is a classic, what's the harm in updating it? I'm always down for more of a good thing

I like the remake too, but Roger does have a point. There really was no reason except money to remake it. It's not entirely true that Romero "never saw a dime" from NOTLD, depending on how you look at it. Due to the success of NOTLD, Romero was able to launch the "of the Dead" franchise and John Russo (who co-wrote the original's screenplay) was able to launch the "of the Living Dead" franchise. So NOTLD did help them make money, even if they never directly profited from it. Its success dictated theirs. There's no disputing the original is a classic horror film, but is the remake any good? That's in the eye of the beholder. Siskel, Ebert and a lot of other critics didn't like it. Oh well. Can't please everybody. But as an avid reader of Fangoria magazine (_the_ horror movie fanzine of the period, which was at that exciting time approaching its 100th issue milestone), I can tell you fan response to the remake was overwhelmingly positive, based on the letters Fango printed. And that's what matters, because that's ultimately who that movie was for: the fans like me who were hungry for zombies, Freddy, Jason, Michael, Leatherface, Pinhead, Chucky, monsters, murder,madness and mayhem....the nastier, ruder, and more offensive, the better. We didn't care if the squares liked it, we only cared if _we_ liked it. So even if Romero and Savini had no reason to remake NOTLD, we're sure glad they did.

Roger likes good horror, he gave positive reviews for Wes Craven's New Nightmare, Joy Ride, Scream 1 & 2, Reanimator, Return of the living dead, dawn of the dead, motel hell, the descent, mimic, Childs play 1, Final destination 1, etc etc etc

"RoboCop 2" and "Child's Play 2" are pretty decent sequels in 1990. Not like "Ghostbusters 2" the year before which was just crapola.

2:07 Ghost Dad was directed by Sidney Poitier, guys. And of course, Cosby the Rapist's previous film was Leonard Part 6, and he couldn't blame Poitier for THAT one.

I'm totally fine with them not liking Robocop 2 but they completely misrepresented the plot with the clip they put together. Robocop isn't a mindless killing machine as Gene and the clip infer as it's Kane's Robocop the mayor is declaring a killer. Robocop 2 and Child's play 2 and Ghost Dad all were technically very well made films. I remember the SFX of Cosby being a ghost being very impressive and Robo 2 you can tell they used better cameras from the first scene. Rog admits this in his Child's Play 2 review and it's true for most of these films.

I didn't think Ghost Dad was terrible. The scene they showed had genuine shock a few moments later. Also how'd Childs Play 2 get on here? Roger kind of liked it and Gene agreed it had a well made ending in their original review.

He showed it was worth it by correctly pointing out the criticism he heard for twenty years about how the zombies were so slow that you could just walk around them. And then brilliantly changing the substance of that one classic line "One more for the fires.".
