Agreed. This song epitomizes their sound. A lot of times the "hits" aren't really a good intro to a band, but Rush was so on fire during this time. Earlier stuff, like 2112, or even Hemispheres right before this, might be too much for a first time listener. While their later stuff doesn't have this kind of great edge.
@stantheman9072
@stantheman9072 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, their first mainstream radio hit is a good starting point. I’d go 2112 next to see if she rolls well with that masterpiece. We’ll know it’s true appreciation if she can dig Cygnus X-1 and can’t wait to get to Hemispheres. I’d hold La Villa Strangiato back for a birthday or some other special occasion. Of course you will know it to be true love when she introduces Rush to her boyfriend, then we will all know the cycle is complete and the world we inherited has been turned upside down.

Thanks for the video RIP Neil Peart. Young kids now have no idea of how much radio was apart of our lives back in the 60's and 70's. Rush best Canadian rock band ever. Lyrically, the song is a lament on the change of FM radio from free-form to commercial formats during the late 1970s. The Toronto-based station CFNY-FM-which had not abandoned free-form programming-is cited as an inspiration for the song.

I remember an interview with Rick Wakeman where he pointed out that as Yes band members came and went and ultimately passed and their places filled, he believed that 100 years from now there will still be a Yes, playing the same music and sounding the same. Does know that I can say the same of Rush, as except for a different drummer on their first album, their lineup never changed in their 40+ years. Although I did hear a rumor that Mike Portnoy might join them as drummer for a tour, but since their last tour was in 2015, I'm doubtful. And as it wouldn't be the same without Peart, he could do the job and I would still go see it as it would be pure virtuosity.
@matthewdrake4385
@matthewdrake4385 3 жыл бұрын
Bat Fang, I could see how progressive music like Rush, Yes and Gabriel-era Genesis could translate to maybe like orchestra setting, the same way Bach, Beethoven and Mozart have been for hundreds of years. As far as Rush going on with another drummer like Portnoy, Geddy and Alex could do a separate project with him, but Neil helped establish the true Rush sound. It’s pretty much irreplaceable. But what could be ideal, would be having drummers who were inspired by Neil play with Geddy and Alex and release like a tribute album to Neil and have proceeds go towards cancer research or something like that.

One very important aspect about this song that few people mention (or don’t know?) is that Neil Peart’s primary inspiration for this song comes from the legendary Toronto radio station CFNY 102.1 FM, otherwise known as “The Edge”. Their station identification tagline was, “102 The Edge. The Spirit of Radio”. What was so unique about The Edge is they would not only play the popular single releases from rock albums, but they would also play the “B” sides of singles in addition to the songs that comprised the entire album. Late night programming included playing albums of various rock bands in their entirety, which was unheard of. It was this type of programming that attracted all of us, including Neil, to tune in regularly. My radio, both at home and in the car was NEVER tuned to anything else but CFNY. They were all about the artists and their body of work. And we as listeners got a better sense of who these artists really were through their material as well as through in-studio interviews with the bands. It truly was an epic listening experience. It bucked all the trends in commercial radio by flipping a middle finger to corporate sponsorship and monetary priorities. With The Edge, the music came first. No compromises. And Neil captured that essence in the song, switching up time signatures and styles (even some Reggae!!) to highlight how commercial success shouldn’t have to be some rigid formula dictated by the music industry. Success will come if artists are allowed the freedom to express art in an honest and open format that neither handcuffs the artist nor the listener into accepting the music industry’s standard for success or what is deemed “good music”.

Brings back fond memories of listening to Permanent Waves in my older sister's car. Spirit of the Radio was one of my favorite songs at the time.

Rush: Red Barchetta. Yes: Starship Trooper. The Who: Won’t Get Fooled Again. U2: Where the Streets have no name. Styx: Renegade. Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, your choice.

You named Styx, but not their two best tunes. Snowblind and Suite Madame Blue.

Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are just those bands you gotta listen to everything they got. At least 90% of what Pink Floyd’s done.

This song has so many musical textures. It's like a whole album in one song. . Great nod to Simon and Garfunkel: For the words of the profits were written on the studio walls, concert halls And echo with the sounds of salesmen, of salesmen, of salesmen.

The line is changed slightly in Rush's song. They change the word " prophets" to "profits"
