Star Wars is full of philosophy. The Jedi Order and Sith embody two different views of power and what it means to be free. Palpatine tempts Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side by suggesting the Jedi and Sith "are similar in almost every way," but it's a trap. We'll explain Palpatine's lie and why that matters for you in the real world.

Geeky Stoics is all about the wisdom within our favorite stories. Star Wars is at the top of the list. In this video, you'll learn about the disciplined path of the Jedi, rooted in selflessness and order, and contrast it with the unrestrained pursuit of power by the Sith. Which approach truly defines freedom in the Star Wars universe and in your own life?

I view the jedi and sith as one philosophy split into 2 parts. You must have self-control to keep yourself in check so you can follow your passion to enjoy life. You can have power to protect yourself but must ensure you don't harm others. Sometimes peace is a lie and power is needed to gain true peace and other times power is needed to protect peace as a last resort.

My favourite thing about this in combination with politics is watching US politics from the outside, seeing Left obsessed with Sith worldview of "breaking their chains" and still believe themselves to be the Jedi.

Fascinating how this hits as I find myself on the tail end of a Carlos Castañeda and Star Wars philosophy binge thanks to DuduFilm's video essay on the Spirituality of Star Wars. Feels like a perfect cap to ground those teachings in mundane reality. Freedom. The ultimate freedom.

Sith Code is actually pretty wise. The reason why Sith is evil is not because their philosophy is bad, but because they interpret it wrong. Person who never fights will always lose. The difference between good and evil is that evil has no code at all, there is no philosophy of evil. Evil person is the person who interprets wise and good thing through the prism of his a55.

@@GeekyStoics Palpatine actually speaking truthfully is not evil as he may seem, Palpatine is actually honest at least with himself, Palpatine wants power and ready to sacrifice everything for it. The point here Palpatine shouldn't be considered human being, he may be portrayed as devil himself, but not human. The difference between human being and devil is that human being is way more bounded than devil in the sense that human being needs love, needs passion, needs community, needs postive emotions, needs to share his life with someone. Negative emotions, hatred, loneliness are extremely incomprehendible for any human being, no human being can live long in such conditions. In that sense devil has no boundaries, devil doesn't need postive emotions, doesn't need compassion, doesn't need to be loved, doesn't need to share his life with someone, so for devil it is way easier to live in hatred, in negative emotions, in loneliness as if it was his sweet home. Devil in that sense is ideal Sith, but thing is Devil was created by God, so Devil must not be considered evil. Throughtout whole series of Star Wars Palpatine never felt any type of struggle in evil, he never sacrificied anything for his power and never felt pain of such sacrifice - this is absolutely impossible for any real human, but it also makes him honest with himself, Palpatine chooses to be evil, chooses power over relationships, and so he is powerful, while Anakin was human being, but fallen, even fallen Anakin continued to struggle and feel extreme pain, Anakin compared to Palpatine wanted everything - both power and relationships, but thing is Anakin wasn't honest with himself, he tried to convince firslty himself that he needs power to defend his people, but because this was lie, he paid for this delusion very big price . Darth Vader can be considered evil, because he interpreted everything wrong and so he fell. And also Palpatine gave chance Anakin to be free from dark side, but Anakin chose to become sith volunteraly, in that sense Palpatine was honest with him. This is the difference between evil Anakin and not evil Palpatine

Interesting that you bring up epictetus's experiences as a slave, I like the take that Wisecrack had of likening the Jedi and Sith code's to nietzsche's idea of "master morality" that power over others is good, and meekness is bad and "slave morality" the opposite kind that, that we see in our modern world.

Yeah we certainly live in slave morality times. If you claim powerlessness, you are virtuous.

I stand by the Sith , the sith codes & the sith way of thinking IF I HAD TO PICK BETWEEN THEM OR THE JEDI ORDER UNDER YODA’S LEADERSHIP 👈🏾. Nobody , nothing & no one else is holding me back from doing what has to be done within reason. You must embrace your whole self , all of your power & all of who you are in order to maximise your potential to succeed in your life whether it be on a small or large scale ✅. (Ultimately I wouldn’t tread on any force path I would prefer to go Bounty hunter but if I had no choice to pick it’s straight Sith living for me 😆👏🏾.)

That's why I became a libertarian in a philosophical stance... the human nature is freedom. Humanity's worst enemy is the establishment of the State... we have been taught to believe it's necessary... but what people forget is that... in the majority of cases it is not Jedi like type of people becoming politicians... it's the Sith like. That being said, of course freedom goes a long way beyond physical, political freedom... but it starts there... as long as we keep forsaking our own freedom to the hands of a central planning hungry machine, we will never truly be free.

If this interpretation is correct then Star Wars is highly deceptive, with many false dichotomies. I'd rather think of life as virtues run contrary to vices. The goal of the virtues is love, joy, and peace. The goal of vices is power through hatred according to arrogant pride. Virtues are righteous passions of love, joy, and peace for those who are deserving, and trustworthy at heart. Vices are the extreme immoral passions for conquest, ownership, and destruction of all things virtue for the power to control, and rule everything desired through authoritarian control. Virtues are to set free. Vices are to control. One is true love, the other is vanity and hatred without cause. On top of that there is the issue of mercy, and redemption. I'd prefer Star Wars to draw truer lines of justice on both the positive side, and the contrary negative side. To be without passions of any kind is robotic self denial. I think the reality is life has contrary passions and they don't mix. One side offers true freedom, the other offers freedom, but only deceives and tempts. One side is for others, the other is heartless toward others. One side keeps good company, the other only enjoys heartless company for the sake of rule.
