Corey Jacobsen waited nearly two decades for this hunt. Drawing a coveted tag is a cause for celebration, but it also brings immense pressure. This hunt led Corey to consider how he’s changed as an elk hunter-and as a person-in the eighteen years since he first applied.

Unit 40 has virtually no public land. Took me 16 years to draw a tag there. They give out less than 10 archery tags to out of state hunters a year. So the bulls get old. I drew a tag last year. It was great just to see so many mature bulls. Shot a monster as well!

Yeah, I'm not sure. Top rut shows unit 40 as 38% private. If you look at OnX the Grand Mesa National Forrest is nearly landlocked though. I'm assuming this is where he was hunting and what he was referring to. @@troyg3319

⁠@@troyg3319not sure about 70% private but a lot of the public is inaccessible. And most of the public is in the low country.
