Everyone needs to know how to read their motor and understand which prop would be best for their setup. This can change bases on boat size, motor size & type, RPM's, weight/load, and water conditions.
So first you need a tachometer. This is the one I use - amzn.to/34LqCdT it will do running hours and max RPM's reached, while also giving you a live RPM reading. Its lasted over two years now and still going strong. Easy to install and I used stick-on Velcro tape to mount it to the motor.
To keep it simple:
If you are at full throttle and the engine is hitting the rev limiter (governor) then you can go up in prop size if you would like to gain some extra speed.
If your engine is lugging (too low of RPM's) you need to go down in prop size. This normally happens when you increase the load in the boat (put more weight in the boat)
For boat size:
6.5hp engine with a small kit will normally run with a 6" or 6.5" prop, this can be run on a 1032 up to a 1436 jon boat. I got 12mph with a 6.5" prop and my 1436 jon boat.
13hp engine with a medium kit runs a 8" or 8.5" and the normal set up is the 1436, but you may also be able to fit it on a 1236.
22hp engine with a large kit runs a 9" and 9.5" prop and is normally paired with the Tracker 1542. It sounds like a great setup. You can also put it on anything up to a 1648 jon boat.
40" bottom width or less = go with a 85" shaft
42" bottom to a 48" bottom = go with a 100" shaft
Anything wider than a 48" bottom a longtail mud motor is not recommended.
