Yeah dude, I’ve been finding I’ve been having sessions at the local without pads, just doing the stuff I’m super confident with. That said I still feel like a fool for not wearing them when I come a cropper 😂

@@lillyfitzgerald9996 yeah man, I enjoy the freedom and less sweaty option that no pads provides, but as a beginner it’s a balance between progression and injuries for me so it’s pads for bigger bowl and learning tricks. I’ve been having a go at the vert ramp recently and knee pads and helmets are the very minimum used by the top pro guys!!
@adesva
@adesva 4 жыл бұрын
I bring a full set (helmet, knee+elbow+wrist guards) every time I skate but typically use different levels for different activities. A miniramp session would be with just wrist guards, and I'd add maybe for the knees or the elbows for certain tricks. Bowl or vert would be full gear.

You summed it up perfectly.. As middle aged guys we don't bounce like the younger lads so we need protection because lets face it when your learning new stuff you fall A LOT!! I remember dropping in on a 3ft ramp with no knee pads on and of course I failed and slammed and couldn't walk for a week I tried it again a week later this time with pads on and of course slammed but was able to get up and carry on with my session..Good pads and a helmet are essential in my eyes who cares if you don't look cool to the hip skaters! You don't look cool with a concussion! On a side note Bish I got the G Form knee and elbow pads they are expensive but really slim and great protection from impacts
@JonBishopSkate

Are those the soft ones with no plastic? I'm about to build a 3.5ft high mini and basically learn to skate from scatch on it. I initially thought 187 pros would be good but they look overkill for a 3.5ft mini. The G form look probably a lot more suitable.

@@Asator66 yes they are soft with no plastic I wear them every time I skate and have had some really good falls and they are brilliant for impacts..I wouldn’t recommend them if your gonna be bailing using knee sliding but they are light and flexible I barely know I’m wearing them 👍

Another great vid. You take pads to whole new level. And I like that you are not afraid to use them- I skate so cautiously that I rarely fall even though I’m padded up. I like the ankle support idea as I broke my ankle in college skating a half pipe. My shoes were a half size too big and I caught my toe coming off a rock slide. Now I make damn well sure my shoes are tight! Tortoise pads make a great padded short.

I wear Globe Sabres because they're actually wide enough for my EEE wide foot but they fit perfectly with extra socks and ankle supports. The triple 8 helmets didn't fit because my head is more roundish and no matter how I set the padding it would be flopping around in one area and pinching in another or completely loose or tight. Going to try an S-one.

Nice one Jon! If you skate with pads, you live to skate another day! I am a Vans guy too, but I only buy the Pro's because they have the really comfy insole and the reinforced toe box. My go to's are half cabs or Sk8 hi. The new Rowan Zorillas are nice too. They do a Sk8 hi BMX which have a cup sole instead of vulcanised and they last much longer. I wouldn't say Vans are the best quality, but they have the most reliable sizing, which is perfect for buying online. I always buy in the sales to because you know they are gonna get thrashed. I bought 3 different styles of Adidas last year. All size 43, but each one was a completely different size! Really inconsistent. I can recommend 187 Derby wrist guards. They have a plastic plate on the palm which is a better solution than the splint that fits in the pleather pockets. 5 bails on concrete and you have to get the gorilla tape out! The 187 derby wrist's don't have the splints on the top of the hands, but they last much longer. We have a mate who is a doctor and he said if you hit your hands hard enough to break them, you will probably break your forearm just above the wrist guards. It doesn't mean they are useless as they will protect all the little bones in your wrists and palms which are harder to fix. I also wear forcefield impact shorts. They are a bit expensive, around £90, but the pads have similar tech the D3O and are removable so you can machine wash the shorts. They have snowboarding model, but I use the motorbike ones because the padding is for higher impacts. These are a real life saver against hippers. You know how those feel right?! They might be expensive, but I have got 6 years and counting out of mine. Great investment. All the best, Rich in Sweden.

My choice for skate shoes are the basic black suede skate shoe from Decathelon. I bought them just as I was there and they have turned out to be super touch and long lasting, offer plenty of grip, ths soul is a little more cusioned that Vans and the tongue is also cusioned and protects the top.of the foot if bailing on transition. Well worth a punt and really reasonably priced. I would like to hear your opinion John. Love the channel, just ordered ankle guards after another chunk removed from just below the bone...ouch.

This video should be required viewing for over 30 skaters. Aside from the obvious that the serious injuries that often result from fluke accidents in skateboarding can impact your ability to do your job or take care of loved ones, one of the worst aspects of injury is being off your board. I was doing a slappy boardslide on a double sided curb a few weeks ago, got a couple of really good ones, and the third one I stuck and slammed forward (I was already rocking a helmet every session). If it had been a 50-50 I would have been able to roll sideways or slam on my butt, but on a backside boardslide, you can really mess yourself because you are facing forward. I could barely wipe my own hindquarters the next day and I've had trouble typing and playing guitar for the last couple weeks. I'm not going to do sliding tricks without wrist and elbow protection again. I also got the bumsavers and covert knee pads to wear underneath my jeans. I am not interested in looking cool (there is literally nothing I could do for that, and there's no reward! who am I trying to impress?), I am interested in continuing to skate well into my 40s, 50s, and 60s. Furthermore, without pads, I don't do stuff that risks falling, and as a result don't progress in my skating. I'd rather progress and not get injured than avoid the slight discomfort of wearing pads (that anyone can get used to once you wear them often enough).

Yeah dude, it’s all personal preference, but I too am a father, bread winner and guitar player so wrist guards and a helmet are mandatory. I’m also 47 so I can also think of nothing worse than being considered cool😆 I like the feeling of bare knees so I dabble with that, but it’s only for sessions where I’m not gonna be knee sliding? The hip pads have been a saviour. My hips seem particularly boney and even the mellowest roll ends up in the bruises of doom.

Thanks for the video, I'm a middle-aged guy that has picked up the board after 25yrs and have just started to learn transition last year. I always use the full set when I'm on my local bowl but usually only wrist guards and knee pads when doing street skating. Was on the bowl yesterday and managed to land on my right hip (after pushing too hard on my slash grind) so was looking forward to your recommendation on the hip guard and surprise! you have your own custom invention. Have you tried any off-the-shelf ones that you'd recommend I try?

That slam in your intro gets me every time Jon, and I get why you wear pads(I was surprised to find out how many) but for me coming home with bloody shins and grazed elbows is part of skating. I do gear up for big bowls though, they're no joke. If I may ask a question. Do you ever just skate down the street unpadded?

Hey Dude Yeah, only really pad up if I’m trying something new or a bit risky. Been enjoying getting out and feeling the freedom of no protection on the curbs and also a bit in the bowl. It certainly sharpens the focus!!

Hi Jon, could you tell me where did you get the extra D3O pad for the demon wrist savers? I had some nasty slams on my left wrist and I feel if I have another one, won't skate again let alone play guitar!!!
@JonBishopSkate
@JonBishopSkate 3 жыл бұрын
Hey dude Yeah the D30 has been great in the wrist guards, I also recommend the neoprene gasget idea to go under the wrist guards, tbh that’s the most effective upgrade as it makes the whole wrist guard fit properly all over with the extra support from the neoprene. All the names of the products are in the vids I think? I race sailboats so the D30 is by a company called Musto and it’s designed as Skiff racing body armour. Just search Musto D30 and select the most cost effective piece. I thing I just cut up a back lumber pad? That one pad made the extra Achilles pads and wrist guard bits. It may seem bit overkill , but I play guitar for my job so I have to manage risks as best as possible??
