We go over some history on the gap and show off some of the incredible skating that has gone down this thing as well as explore the school looking for other skate spots it's hiding. Most people probably don't realize that there is a 12 and 16 stair at the school that has also been skated!

Me too. Busted my leg in ‘97 and skateboarding went downhill from there for me. I love how there is so much access to content on KZfaq. Way back when you were limited to a VHS tape that you had to purchase. Or a copied version from a friend. Now all I have to do is type stuff into KZfaq. Still love to watch the progression. People are so fucking good at skateboarding now it’s retarded.

America is gigantic and most skaters have never even been to California most likely. I grew up on the east coast a little south of Boston, Mass. From there to Los Angeles would be a 45 hour, 3000 mile long trip by car. Even just to get down to say, Washington D.C. is still an 8 hour drive through crazy traffic, so likely longer than 8 hrs. Most of us USA skaters still view these iconic spots the same way that you guys overseas do!

Seeing that slam at Carlsbad with the credit card initially made me think "wow, these people are idiots, nothing is worth this!". Then I remember all the fun times I had nearly dying at the skatepark trying to grind copings. I also think to when I nearly destroyed my guitar playing hand from a 5-0 grind on a very tall coping that went wrong. I fell into the bowl and bent my guitar playing hands fingers so far back I felt my sciatic nerve grind against my wrist horribly. This gave me a permeant but mild form of carpel tunnel that permanently affected my ability to play my chosen style of music, heavy metal. I could no longer grip the neck precisely enough, and to this day still can't to play that quickly any longer. I can still play fast, don't get me wrong. However, I am nowhere near what I was before my injury and unfortunately I didn't have a KZfaq channel nor the self esteem to film myself back then. That being said, I now have a flourishing KZfaq channel playing guitar and demoing guitar pedals. I can't play as fast but I changed my style, as a result I make far more money with my guitar solos because they have a wider appeal. This was a welcome side effect but I do with I could both skate, and play guitar at the level I used to. My injury made that impossible and I had nightmares for decades and to this day. I'm a guitar teacher so that slam was enough to make me quit skating for what I thought was for good. I don't think anyone is an idiot for doing what they love but what I found stupid was me not wearing a helmet or a cup! There must be a credit card proof cup right? Anyways, I'm 35 now and this channel has inspired me to get back to the park, albeit with knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a cup and a helmet. I don't care if I look like a jackass. At least I'll be safe. If that's what it takes for me to not destroy my ability to play, I'm happy. Now I'm staying within my limits and still doing a lot of my old vert tricks. Stay safe out there everyone. A helmet is a MUST.

Ocean Howell attended Carlsbad High. I ollied the gap back in 1992/93, by then I was already ollying 12 stair sets and over fire hydrants. I was first and foremost best at Freestyle, then Street while competing with guys like Daewon Song, Danny Castillo, Chet Thomas from the late 1980s through the early 1990s.

Nice vid, I like the spot history and walking around the space to get context. Maybe a Santa Monica Triple Set video would be good. I went there and could not imagine even jumping down them, so damn long, and the runway blows.
