Welcome to another LIVE mixed media art tutorial. I decided to try out some new ruling pens that I heard about from artist Carolina Della Valle ( making.me).
Materials used: ruling pen, acrylic ink, acrylic paint, and watercolor paper cut to 5"x7"

@@raggapuss it is actually more like a glass calligraphy pen. Needs gentle handling though.🍀💖

The pens were called "ruling pens". My dad used them for designing fonts and doing precise lettering. Great idea to try it here!

Yes! Ruling pens! How cool that your dad designed fonts - I'm a sucker for a great font and spend waaaaaaaay too long looking at fonts for anything I make (holiday cards, website design, KZfaq thumbnails, etc.) haha!

@@jackieschomburgart ill be in Baltimoe MD with my son wife and my sweet 2 year old granddaughter. ill be shopping at Plaza Art, Michaels and Walmart (has best price on those deco and color shifts i use on gell plate) and im want some stamps and stencils from PM. Artist. and some papers from Taperology. yesssss!

Loved this and the results Jackie! It’s another solid example of how as artists experiment you can see evolution taking place. In other words while they are different than what I’ve witnessed over the last year I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see your signature on them. Hope that makes sense!

Thank you! ❤️ I have a feeling I’ll be adding to them this week so they’ll continue to morph into their Jackie-ness. It’s fun for me to start off in different ways and then to figure out how to bring it back into something that feels like me. ☺️ I bit off a bit more than I could chew during the hour though - I could have used more time! 😂

Thank you Jackie. I really liked this one. Welcome to gesso! Ha. I think a lot of artist use it as it’s more transparent than titanium white. Now that you have some I’d love to see you prep some paper with at least one coat. Would love to see what you think of painting on a gesso’d surface.

Thanks Carl ❤️ Haha! I am trying a new journal that has thinner pages than I’m used to so I was trying this as a way to avoid using a separate coat of gesso, so I’d just get to get right to the painting, but would secretly also be adding gesso to my pages. Essentially tricking myself into using gesso as a ground 😂 I’ll do a video with a gesso layer on some paper one of these days, just for you 😆

Hi Jackie, thanks for sharing your process and congratulations on your class. I am with you. I coffee does not agree with me and I found out for old blood types. It’s not beneficial at all. It’s it’s about tea. Try the Douglasfir Tip tea from Juniper Ridge in Oregon. It’s very meditative and wonderful if you like piney things enjoy.

Those bladed drafting pens are called ruling pens. I am a cartographer and used them in the 70’s. We filled them with the dropper and ran them along a raised straight edge. We used swivelling ruling pens for free form. The line thickness could be well defined with the screw setting. I still have them. Must dig them out for some art play.

Lovely to watch as always -- really unusual colors (& no collage!)❤I don't know anything about fountain pens but have used calligraphy pens for line sometimes -- Joggles does have some interesting stencils (particularly those designed by Elizabeth St. Hilaire).

dharma trading company sells calligraphy pens with an assortment of nibs that are good. you would have different widths of lines. they are mail order only.

on gelli printing i saw your video with pastels Heres a tip from artwhisperer who does videos ... try drawing on paper anything with oil pastels .. vthen transfer it to gel plate the same way you would transfer a magazine image . the oil pastel on paper acts like the laser toner on magazine.. amazing.

@@jackieschomburgart yes but you put the oil pastel on paper not onto the gel plate. it acts as a resist!

Jackie, what is in the Pyrex dish that you use for your paints? Can you explain the prep for it. Sorry if you've already explained it in another video, but I have not come across one. Thanks

Hi! It's wet paper towels with baking parchment on top. It keeps the paint from drying out too quickly. Essentially an inexpensive way to make your own stay wet palette :)
