Hey :)
I'm not doing super well so a comfy and chill sketchbook session is just what I need. Grab a pencil and some paper and let's relax.

Being sick sucks. I hope you feel better soon! I actually love the way you non-conventionally start portraits. Proportionally, it makes mathematical and logical sense to start with the skull as a base. However , I, too, start in non conventional places. Sometimes, I draw the facial features first. Sometimes, I draw the hair. Sometimes, I draw the skull and start with a circle. I find I get bored doing things exactly the same way every time. Especially since I love to draw people more than anything else. Painting, I prefer landscapes. Drawing / sketching? People. Watching you sketch is so frickin soothing... I love the interaction as well, but you need to zone out, draw, and heal.

Derwent makes a fine liner called Graphik Line on graphite color gets close to a pencil feel for me. thanks for the video😊

For pencil smudging: spray a bit of hairspray (the cheapest one you can find) one tube of spray will last a long time and protect ur sketchbook pages :)

I feel the same way about pencil smudges, especially over time. It doesn’t feel like a pencil when sketching, but I’ve been using the Sakura micron in light cool grey. It’s the one that’s made me the happiest so far! Hope you feel better soon!

How the heck can you just start sketching "somewhere"? I mean without the default circle for the head even? 😮 I'm mesmerized with your process!

Draw the light sketch in 2H and then change the contrast on the camera till it disappears. Then record the sketch over. Then edit the contrast back to normal in post production.

Practice. When you've sketched so many heads, it's easy to estimate the proportions even without using guide lines.

And I'm guessing this based on the cuts but you're also not seeing a lot of erasure clips

I got a metal pencil in japan that doesn't smudge and is mostly erasable. Though I found over time it does dull and you cant really sharpen it. At least the one that I bought.

Ain stein no smear leads are great! I have a 2B and as long as its just lines and not like shading or anything it barely if at all smears

About a pen that looks like pencil: there is a Noodler's ink called "Lexington Gray" that has a nice graphite look if you use it on a Fine or XFine fountain pen, and it's waterproof. There's also the Zebra F-301 BF, a ballpoint pen that lets you do really nice feathery lines like a pencil, but it's not waterproof.

This made me think you can probably make your own gray ink by mixing white and black ink together or mixing red and green or blue and brown.

@@moonlightgator you definitely can! but there's something really nice about the lexington gray, i guess its being able to get the same gray every time you ink your pen. plus it has worked on any pen ive inked with no issues.
