How to Export from Sketchup to Revit Quickly and Easily + Common Issues - Export from Sketchup and Import in Revit.
This quick Sketchup and Revit tutorial will teach you how to quickly and easily export any 3D Sketchup model and import the file into Revit.
The typical process I see architecture students take when exporting from Sketchup to Revit is that they’ll export the Sketchup model as .dwg file - an AutoCAD drawing. This can cause unwanted issues and problems, ruining the mass of the 3D model and turning it into a 2D drawing.
In this Sketchup and Revit tutorial, you’ll discover how to export the Sketchup model while maintaining and preserving its quality and three-dimensionality.
Another common mistake I see students make is that they will import the CAD file directly into Revit, either by importing or linking it.
This can also cause unwanted errors and warnings.
In this tutorial, I begin by exporting the 3D model from Sketchup as a “Sketchup Version 6” (.skp) filetype, instead of an AutoCAD drawing (.dwg). This preserves the model’s quality and allows us to import it directly into Revit.
Once exported from Sketchup, I open up Revit and create a “In-Place Mass”. This allows us to import the Sketchup Version 6 file as a generic mass. If preferred, you would then be able to change the walls to be Walls in Revit, or the floors to Floors in Revit. It’s a very handy trick to know!
If you have any warnings or errors appear when attempting to export from Sketchup or import into Revit, consider cleaning up your model in Sketchup before exporting. There are plenty of ways to do this. For example, you can:
1) Go to “Window, Model Information, Statistics, Purge Unused” 2) Unhide Objects & Switch on Layers, Copy All to a New File 3) Use the Extension: CleanUp3 (via Extension Warehouse) 4) Visit: help.sketchup.com/en/sketchup... (follow along to optimise your model)
This will fix issues when importing into Revit such as:
“This family instance has too many edges. Remove unnecessary geometry or split the instance into multiple instances”,
“Too many faces were created from imported meshes. Host by Face tools may not select the imported meshes correctly. Decrease the complexity of the file or try importing only selected layers to resolve”,
As well as “Revit cannot import some of the geometry. This result can be caused by various issues with the source file. Adjust the geometry in the file and try the import process again”.
Once your Sketchup and Revit model has been cleaned up, these issues will no longer appear.

I think it was work for some interior model support, not the entire model building. Model entire building in Revit, like wall, floor, roof. But the accessories like bed, bathtub, even plants it works wonderful. It was wonderful tutorial, thank you 🙏

Hey kyle, thanx for the video Does Revit needs a computer capacity higher than what sketchup needs ? Or it's the same ?
@kylesinko
@kylesinko 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Nesrine, it really depends what you're doing in the programs and how well you can maintain your projects. Revit inherently is a bit more computer-heavy considering it has a lot more features and libraries. SketchUp is fairly low-requirement to run but can get just as heavy once introducing plugins and lots of data.

Can you make a video on how to edit the walls/roofs?
@kylesinko

You would have to edit the objects in Sketchup or use the "Massing & Site" tab in Revit to convert the imported geometries to roofs or walls with the Model by Face tool

How can render sketchp model in revit ?is it possible pls reply
@kylesinko
@kylesinko 3 жыл бұрын
I can't see why you would want to but it was be as simple as importing the model in one component at a time so you can assign revit materials to the sketchup components you imported.

when you import it can you see the floors properly in the floor view or does it just show the whole model
@kylesinko
@kylesinko 3 жыл бұрын
The floor view simply puts a slice through any objects in the 3D model. Where it will give you a floor plan slice through the model, it might need some touching up.

So I am using the web based Sketchup. I download the .skp file run thru all the steps in the video and then I get " Linked file could not be located. It will be displayed as it was when this project was last saved". Any fix to this other than upgrading to the desktop version?
@kylesinko
@kylesinko 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not completely sure on that one. Haven't used the web based version of Sketchup. I can imagine it might be a bit buggy though compared to the desktop version. I would give that a try.

@andrewm8162
@andrewm8162 2 жыл бұрын
@@dididoneva yeah, look at my previous comment above. "When you download the SKP. file don't download 2021 or newer. I used 2017 version and it imported into Revit". You basically end up with a in-place mass you can't explode in Revit. Kind of useless IMO

@@kylesinko I'm paying $75/m for revit lt... How much does it cost for regular revit? Another thing I hate is how overly complicated revit is VS other cad programs like sketchup.. Lots of complicated moves to do tedious what should be simple tasks turn into long winded ordeals! I'm so tired of revit! And $75m for a half assed cad is too damn much money!!! 🤢🤢🤮
