At GCN we try to give you all the tips and tricks you need to keep riding your road bike all winter. But sometimes it really is too cold to ride on the road! Of course, there's still the turbo trainer, but what if you need to get outdoors as many of us love to do? Well, Jeremy has just the answer. In this video, he tries out ski-mountaineering, or Skimo, with friends of the channel Tim Johnson and Lyne Bessette to show us that you can still get outdoors to work on your fitness, even when it's well below 0 degrees!

As a Norwegian, I approve off this. Here in Norway, we climb the Norwegian mountains whit this type off skies in the winter. I personally use xc skies in my winter training. Great training.

At 63 years I have seen changes in skiing equipment and terminology related to Alpine style and Cross Country style and Ski Mountaineering from the 1970s to now. Never have I heard the term "SkiMo". Likewise I have seen changes in cycling to from where there was no such thing as Mountain Bikes to now Gravel and Cyclo Cross. When I lived where there was snow I had Cross Country skiis and downhill or Alpine Skiis. Ski Mountaineering usually meant trying to climb a mountain over several days time like backpacking but with skiis on. This was an activity that was very serious because the weather could obviously kill. I have never participated in this kind of activity but have wished to and I am not dead yet. I agree that the activity of using skiis without a ski lift is a great alternative to cycling in winter but I have noticed that the first few times out there are muscles that get sore and tired that are not ones used in cycling. So it is wise to be aware and not do too much until you are used to the specific activity.

If you’re into gruelling up long climbs on a bike, ski mountaineering is similar graft.

Alpine skiing is also a good way to keep you fit. Breaking from 60-70 mph will make your legs feel like you are KOM

I've got into cycling as a summer time training for skimo. These two are nice ways to enjoy nature and train myself through out the whole year. Climbing mountains in summer is another good spice.

I started cycling to get fit for Ski Touring, ironically! I was a bit miffed to find that cycling had stolen the name of the epic ski tour I was training for: The Haute Route. The skiing version of this is a multi-day "high mountain traverse" from Chamonix to Zermatt. Perhaps one of the GCN presenters would like to give that a try?

Yes! Thanks for the video Jeremy. It is difficult watching the "winter" videos in the UK living in Canada. I practice nordic skiing and fat biking in the winter here in Ottawa and is a great alternative to indoor training. I have never heard of Skimo, it looks like a lot of fun for sure. Cheers eh!

Oh I wouldn't get in to skiing, it's a slippery slope and things will go downhill quickly

Great video! I've skinned up a few ski areas in New England--Magic, Pico, Waterville, Sugarloaf. A great way to spend the day while the kids go skiing.

This is the way we "ride" here during the winter!! This mountain is almost in my backyard. Amazing! Big difference with riding in UK during the winter! Thanks for this video. Now you know what winter means! In french, we call it "Randonnée alpine".
