Jack Frost, Pennsylvania - On this beautiful bluebird day, I was testing out this new purchase of lens protectors for my 360 camera -- they weren't great btw... the stitch line is awful! if you know what it looks like in this video..
.. And then I came upon an injured skier.
This is the 2nd time this year I had to call Ski Patrol for an injured rider. This was more concerning as it was a head injury without a helmet. You can probably sense - from my fumbling of words - how concerned I was while trying to gather my thoughts. Hopefully I could compose myself next time I am in this situation so I can communicate with Ski Patrol more effectively.
This happened at one of the resort’s black rated trail, and perhaps the steepest section of any of their run. Based on the accounts from the two good samaritans who witnessed her crash, and who stayed with her throughout (not with her party), she lost control towards the bottom half of the steep section. Slammed her head and crashed all the way towards the wooded area off the side of the trail.
[09:17] Ski Patrol's on-scene initial assessment was head injury with scalp laceration.
She must’ve sustained the head laceration on hard pack snow based on the blood trail that was present on the snow. I am certain that with a helmet, she wouldn’t have sustained the injury and would have not bled.
It was a bit hard to communicate with her as it looks like english wasn’t her first language. And as well as she seems to be disoriented likely from sustaining a concussion.
A few moments after I turned off my camera, her skiing buddies arrived, also without helmets on..
Me, and the two good samaritan riders stayed until she was put on the rescue toboggan and ski patrol got the information they needed from us.
LESSONS TO TAKE FROM THIS:
1. WEAR A HELMET! You will never know when your luck runs out - always be on the side of caution.
2. Always make sure you have quick access to the Ski Patrol emergency number of the resort you are visiting for the day on your phone.
3. Know the limits of your ability level.

As a ski patroller, every fatal ski/snowboard accident I've been on, the patient was not wearing a helmet. I have also had patients that were wearing a helmet, with the helmet being broken into pieces from the accident, able to walk away from the crash. Not saying a helmet makes you invincible; it doesn't. But it greatly improves your chances of avoiding a permanent head injury!

I'm a ski patroller as well and believe helmets can save lives. But not all. The real killers are speed (skiing or riding at a speed above your ability) and poor decision making with regards to one's actual ability. This is a sport filled with risks and rewards. Know and act upon your limits to minimize the risks.

Thankfully most of the people I see out East in NC/WV are wearing them now. You're kind of looked at like the odd one out if you don't have a helmet these days, when before people looked at you funny if you were wearing one. I took a pretty nasty fall a month ago and broke my tailbone, hit my head as the second part of the impact, but with the MIPS helmet I was completely fine and it probably saved me from a concussion. Good on you for stopping, I see a lot of people yard sale and everyone just keeps going by them. Always good to check on people, can at least help them collect their skis if they slid far away, and worst case scenario you can assist if they are injured.

I grew up at Shawnee. In 1988ish an instructor went into the woods, hit a rock, did not make it. Every kid had a helmet the following season. Mine looked like a watermelon. I’m a patroller at a small club now and all the really bad injuries are riders without helmets. I’m shocked it’s even an option. Insurance companies won’t let us ride the lift with back backs on, but you can still go 30mph+ without a bucket on. Just not worth the risk.

I mean it’s not easy to stay calm, for many reasons. I was a mountain guide for a while, it wasn’t my profession, it was really just in name, I had a guy lacerate his hand all the way across, fully to the bone as well as a laceration on the forearm down to the bone, his helmet was cracked all the way around, slurring his word and such. It was my first incident, calling it in I was probably talking a bit faster than I should have, luckily we got the guy stabilized, they brought a helicopter in and took him out. My heart was definitely pounding though, I had no idea if he had any internal hemorrhaging or what, I just wanted him to make it out without anymore issues. You did a good job though.

My first day of snowboarding, I thought having a helmet was useless, thinking the snow is all cushy enough for the head.... I got the hang of snowboarding fairly quick but I was still fairly new at it and falling down. I decided to go down this small but steep hill that goes into a flat piece of land and I was going fast. Too bad I caught a backside edge and hit my head super hard. I didn't get a concussion I think, but I was dazed the hell out and my neck was huuurting. I didn't move for a solid few minutes but I picked myself up and decided to go home with a raging headache. Lesson learned -- wear ya helmet... I hit slushy snow which is fairly soft but it still hurt like a motherfucker. If I had hit hard packed snow or dirt or some shit like this I'd be going to a hospital with a far more serious injury.

Don't see any reason why you should not wear a helmet and also carry a whistle with you in the event of an emergency. An Avalung and Avalanche transceiver is also good if you are in BackCountry or where Avalanches can happen or you can get stuck in tree wells. There's a good chance any ski patrol in the area will have one active. Don't really need the Avalung or transceiver if you're just doing normal groomed runs like this. On the helmet, you should have one at all times. And if you don't think you look 'cool', get over it. All the pros wear them, so who are you trying to fool with your backwards cap or cool hair style, lol? Always chuckled that skateboarders wouldn't wear helmets because they thought it wasn't cool, when the best skateboarder of all time (Tony Hawk) always wore one with pads (even when he did Jackass stunts).

I would like to further the argument that helmets are extremely important by giving you an example: There are kids that bike on my street daily (middle school to high school aged kids) who bike at night, wear zero reflective gear, and no helmet or lights. My road is busy. Not super busy, but like 40mph and near a lot of stores that people are coming out of. A few years ago there was a girl literally just coming out of the community entrance, next to the fence, when a drunk driver hit her on the side and she FLEW off her bike. Guess what she was wearing? Dark colored clothes, shorts and a t shirt, no lights, no helmet, no reflectors. You know what else is crazy? She died. She was 27 years old. There is now a shrine in front of the entrance of my neighborhood there for roughly three years now because of it. All because some kid didn’t wear the right gear. You know what else happened recently? Another crash. And it was in an INTERSECTION near me. Like one with a light and 45mph roads. Another kid got slammed into when someone was doing a u turn over there last week. But he survived with minor injuries and only two breaks, one to his wrist and one to his ribs. Guess what he was wearing? A helmet. Yes I’m aware that the visibility clothing like lights and reflectors will not protect you in the event of a crash, but they GREATLY reduce the chances. Prevention is better than treatment. And in this case, the driver was able to swerve because he saw this kid because of the lights. If he’d seen nothing but black, the kid would have been run over full on and still probably would’ve died. But he wore the right stuff. Moral of the story: but a goddamn helmet
@Benzknees
@Benzknees 2 ай бұрын
Helmets are tested to hold in one piece when dropped with an artificial head inside onto an anvil, at about 12-14mph. In two separate studies, the average skier was found to travel at 27-33mph. Force increases exponentially with speed. And the thing that causes concussion & potentially death is the brain slowing down rapidly inside the skull. There is no test for this with helmets & no manufacturers make such a claim. You'd need car sized crumple zones & air bags for such. There is simply no way for a thin plastic & EPP helmet to prevent a brain injury. Any claim to the contrary is just mixing up a small number of random events, and correlating these into causation.

I’ve spent some time working on emergency trauma teams in Salt Lake near many ski resorts. You definitely want to wear a helmet and it does help mitigate injury severity. It can prevent minor head trauma and even though major high speed crashes will still carry risk for TBI/concussion a helmet always helps, especially when it comes to skull fractures or bleeding, like in this individual. MIPS is a great feature.
