Skin Care Formulation 101: Ingredient Categories

Hey Science Babes! Do you wonder what certain ingredients are doing in your skincare? In today's video I cover all of the ingredient classes that make up skin care formulations. If an ingredient does not fall into one of these categories then it is just a filler or there for marketing purposes!
I highly recommend looking through products you have and try to name the function of that ingredient in the formula. If you get stuck - google is your best friend! The more you do this the more familiar you will be with skin care ingredients and their purpose.

I would love if you put together "cheat sheets" for videos like this with all of the information written out! It would be so helpful to be able to print this out and reference it.

Paula from Paula's choice has an entire dictionary of ingredients, what they do, etc. I also have some sheets left from my esthetic school, but Idk how I would get those to you, lol. But, there are entire books about it, one I think is called "Cosmetic Ingredients Encyclopedia", or something like that, as well as others. I used them to study in school. Hth!

I really appreciate your content. There is a lot of fear mongering going on in the beauty world with certain ingredients being labelled bad or unsafe coming from people who do not have your qualifications or any knowledge on the safety or purpose of the ingredients.

Agreed! Petrolatum, Mineral Oil and Silicones work wonderfully on my skin and finding products with them is getting harder to find. I was also fine with Parabens but the new replacement ingredients irritate my skin a lot.😕 I want my Parabens back! Thankfully Mineral Oil is easy to find at local Chains like Walmart and I can add it to my lotions and creams for both my face and body. I use a lot of Cerave because they have the ingredients that help my skin thrive! From department stores it’s strictly Clinique. And yes, I know the Estée Lauder companies are testing on animals to be able to be sold in China. It’s required by law in China. I’m trying to find new Skincare that can replace Clinique. No luck so far. I’d love to try Dr. Sam Bunting’s line of skincare but it’s way too costly to have it shipped!

As an esthetician I find these type of videos super helpful for me to understand ingredients and product formulas & I love the way you break it down and make everything easy to digest. I’d love to see a toxic ingredients video or a video on ingredients we should avoid

I found you and subbed because I was so happy that someone who had actually studied was giving us skincare info. I'm using this video and Paula's Choice dictionary to make a spreadsheet so I can bring it with me so I'm not always referring to my phone to look up ingredients when I'm in Sephora or my local pharmacy.
