You and Dr. Shreene Idriss are my two of my Professional go-to resources in seeking skincare advice! I just feel like there is always a wealth of information that has genuinely helped me have healthier skin. I am actually at a point where I can turn over any Moisturizer and scan the ingredient label - knowing what many of their implications as listed there will have on my skin. It also is encouraging me to do research and thus educating myself on knowing what are all the benefits of the applications that I am choosing to layer over my skin - in whether that be contained within Cleansers or Oils or Moisturizers. Can't wait until your next tutorial!

For those that need the short answer. It seems to be generally recommended to use Benzoyl Peroxide in the morning and Differin Adapalene gel at night. But Benzoyl Peroxide and Differin Adapalene gel can be used together. Differin Adapalene gel is a form of topical vitamin A that actually remains stable in the presence of Benzoyl Peroxide. It is literally what prescription medication Epiduo(a combination of Benzoyl Peroxide and Adapalene) is. You can find a few studies on the subject in the National Library of Medicine. However, combining both products together could cause skin irritation and dryness for individuals that have more sensitive skin. Also some additional studies show that the lower percent Benzoyl Peroxide products work with pretty much the same efficiency as the products with higher percent for acne. So if you want to use Benzoyl Peroxide and Differin Adapalene gel together at night it may be beneficial to go for a Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser with lower percent because it can be less irritating and just as effective for treating acne as higher percents. But as always you need to try these things out for yourself, monitor progress over the course of 4 to 6 weeks, and adjust as needed to see what works best for you and your skin. If you require a more personal assessment then it would probably be best to see a Dermatologist.

I think that advice, about keeping it simple, is a great one! Sometimes (especially when I’ve done The Ordinary AHA + BHA) I just put a very simple nighttime skincare: I got the Beauty Bay Cica + Mushroom 🍄 serum that my skin loooves, and then The Inkey List niacinamide serum (it’s well rounded and not too strong) and on top CeraVe (the original blue one). And that’s it. When I’m in real doubt I just have the Cica + mushroom.

6:25 When it comes to same ingredients + same ingredients, sometimes it's hard to avoid. Example: when buying products for dry skin, pretty much all of them are going to have hyaluronic acid in it. Moisturizers, foundations, concealers. Or for people who love CeraVe, all of those contains ceramides. Should we try harder to avoid those?

Check the video at 5:16, she recommends not to use vitamin C directly after a cleanser/cleansing the skin, because cleansers raise the skins ph, and the skin is naturally a bit low/acidic and it needs to be that. So I would get a toner to use in between the cleanser and the vitamin C serum. I would use the toner after cleansing both in the morning and evening, and make sure it’s a toner that balances/lowers the ph after cleansing the skin (which most good toners do). Quality toners both hydrate and ph balances skin after cleansing, so I recommend adding that step to your routine, preferably both am and pm. If you’re interested I can really recommend the Korean brand Klairs’ toners, Supple Preparation Facial Toner or the unscented/perfume free one (Supple Preparation Unscented Facial Toner), both of them are great, I would however recommend getting the unscented one if you have very sensitive skin, or skin prone to breakouts or reactions to perfumes in skincare. Dr Ceuracle Hyal Reyouth Toner is also a great toner, also very hydrating, it’s scented though. But of course there are many other toners that work well, but I know that these are very good and work very well and they’re also quite nice for sensitive skin, especially Klairs unscented toner. But just find a good toner that at least lowers/balances ph, that’s the main purpose since you don’t use anything to lower your ph after cleansing. Toner should be applied with just your hands on a damp face for best results, (after cleansing of course) and just pat it in and let it sink in before continuing with the next step in your routine. You can also pat in the toner in layers if your skin is dry or when it needs extra hydration, up to about eleven layers I believe, just let it sink in in between the layers. I vary the amount of layers from routine to routine, most often I just do one layer. The toners I mentioned, both of Klairs’ Supple toners and the Dr Ceuracle, both hydrate the skin and lowers/balances ph after cleansing, so the skin goes back to the level of ph/acidity it prefers, and it prepares the skin for following skincare products.

You can use it with AHA, BHA, vit c or BPO. She's staying that it could lead to irritation for beginners, I'm an advance user and I combine BHA, Azaleic acid and retin a 0.025. Great results without irritation. Been using it since quite a few years. Retinoids play very well with other ingredients, it's just people have tendency to over do it and that's what Dr has been saying.

Do you use all of them every day? I currently use vitamin C and azaleic acid in the morning, and retinoid and niacinamide in the evening; twice a week I do an acid instead of the retinoid. I wondered if all this was overkill? I mainly hear of azaleic acid for pregnant women or those irritated by retinoids, so wondered if there was any benefit to using both.

Sorry to burst the bubble but I am someone that has Skin of Color and I use Vitamin c and Retinol every night and no issues so far. I have super sensitive skin and still, I do not see anything like the Dr. Is mentioning. I trust Dr. V and her layering for Skin of Color especially for addressing Hyperpigmentation, because I am doing all that and my skin is clearing up 1st time in 20 yrs. I have been to Local Dermatologists in the US. I am talking about the finest ones that Rx creams worth $500 & they made my condition worst. Dr. V's advise is free. Products cost me mere $ 50 max and Results are Amazing! So, Thanks but no Thanks.. Vitamin C with Retinol does not do anything bad provided you are not over stabbing your skin with them and make sure you are moisturizing it well.

When dose it count as mixing? When it’s all used in one setting? One item at the beginning in the day and one at night? Or does it count if it’s within the same week?

Just use Vit C serum in the morning after cleansing your face with water only and apply sunscreen to boost sun protection. Thats it! You dont need much in the morning. Night time, cleanse with your cleanser, maybe a toner after that, apply either Ordinary Buffet, Matrixyl, or HA, followed by a moisturizer and then your Retinol! Boom! Simple & effective

Next time, or in a future video, can you describe or give examples of what these ingredients and their common name/derivatives will read like, or be named in an ingredient list of a product. For example: copper peptides, vitamin a, or salicylic acid/willow bark extract etc. can be referred to in different ways that commonly appear in ingredient lists. They’re so hard to read sometimes, so I don’t always know what to look for when trying to identifying a substance I should avoid. This was a super helpful video! I learned a lot and need to make a few slight adjustments to my routine to make sure my skin stays happy.

A year later I'm finally here and I love BHA for bumpy skin to exfoliate for me as it doesn't cause my rosacea to flare and I love tetrinoin for age related issues. So I think you said I can use both, just use bha in AM and tetrinoin in PM, right,Dr Dray? Do not want to make the tetrinoin unefficacious...inefficacious...??? not efficacious 😂🤣🥲 We all love you and appreciate the hard work you do in our behalf. You are my fave dematologist. My local derm tends to my cancerous bumps from NOT USING SUNSCREEN as a child, teen, young adult growing up in Florida. So everyone, Sunscreen&Subscribe to Dr Dray and one day when you are older hopefully you will not need a derm to biopsy cancer on your upper torso...also had 2 on my calves. No place is safe from the harm of the sun...so Sunscreen,y'all! Dr Dray just said not to invite a new guy to the prom, but stick with the one you know and use it for 4-6 mos before adding a new guy to the dance. Perhaps the one you are dancing with right now, in 4-6 mos he might ask you to his prom and then who knows how that will go. But be patient for a few mos to see how this current relationship is working out before discarding him or inviting a new boy to the prom. Our dance cards do not have to be filled so quickly, in spite of what Miss Elizabeth might have instructed you in Pride&Prejudice. Dr Dray trumps Ms Elizabeth everyday of every week. Patience, dear peeps, patience...sunscreen&subscribe to Dr Dray.

She's mentioned it before but I can't remember when. ACV is actually way too acidic for the skin even when diluted. She really has a negative opinion on DIY skincare in general. The reasons are: 1. Natural ingredients have too many volatile chemical components which degrade 2. Home formulations are incredibly variable and not tested for safety 3. Most of the beneficial molecules are in the wrong concentration to work 4. Many recipes include physical exfolients, enzymes, strong acids, or strong bases which all are leading causes of irritation and may cause infection. Basically, if you're not a chemist and you aren't familiar with the hard research, you are not qualified to make your own skincare. Not even Dr. Dray makes stuff on her own.
