AKAI: Rise/Fall/Broke . The company's business eventually became discombobulated and it left the audio industry in 1991. At its peak in the late 1990s, Akai Holdings employed 100,000 workers and had annual sales of HK$40 billion (US$5.2 billion). The company filed for insolvency in November 2000, owing creditors US$1.1B. It emerged that ownership of Akai Holdings had somehow passed in 1999 to Grande Holdings, a company founded by Akai's chairman James Ting. The liquidators claimed that Ting had stolen over US$800m from the company with the assistance of accountants Ernst & Young who had tampered with audit documents going back to 1994.Ting was imprisoned for false accounting in 2005,[and E&Y paid $200m to settle the negligence case out of court in September 2009.[8] In a separate lawsuit, a former E&Y partner, Christopher Ho, made a "substantial payment" to Akai creditors in his role as chairman of Grande Holdings.

Good video...& thanks for including their early synths but before you got to samplers, I do think their single rack gear , which were very successful, would have been worth a mention ( I’m looking at my Akai me80 patchbay as I type this😁)

All I care about using from Akai is there midi keyboards, they put all the same controls on the MKPs and MPCs so they function the same. By doing this though they gave people a reason not to get a MPC damaging overall profit.

Interesting story. I never really knew the history of Akai as a company, nor did I know about the corruption that was going on behind the scenes. So, my MPC4000 was built by a Chinese owned Japanese company? Crazy!!! Thanks for sharing!

The quality dropped dramatically since 2005. while the 5000 being the worst MPC ever made. As you already know from my previous comment of me throwing away my 5000 back in January. I was so frustrated with all the quality issue's that I stopped by anything made by Numark/InMusic products all the together given that Akai and Alesis products are more of the same that are mass produced products by the same company that shares many of the same parts. The parts are very cheap and the newer MPCs have a very cheap build quality. Even my 5000 knobs kept falling off and the paint faded. The 4000 was the last great machine built before Akai Professional went out of business and then its assets and brand was sold to Numark now known as inMusic today. The 3000 will for ever remain as the greatest MPC ever made in history under the real Japanese Akai company in the 90s that Rodger Linn designed himself in partnership.
