Moe kept the club-face square through impact, longer than anyone who ever played the game but the club also appears to rotate. How is that possible? This video discusses one of the most misunderstood movements in the golf swing - the release.

I made a commitment to transition to a single plane swing and couldn’t be happier! Finally, after 30 years of frustrating golf, I can strike the ball pure. There’s no doubt this is the best way to swing a golf club. Thanks Todd for bringing to light Moe’s brilliance.

Thanks Mr Graves your doing the golf world a massive service with your knowledge ,wisdom and understanding of Moe Normans golf swing . Bucky Fuller used to say . In order to change the existing reality you have to create a New Model that makes the old one obsolete. Back to the future....perhaps The right palm grip or trail hand as you call it is his secret with the One Plane set up . There's no conscious thought of trying to square the clubface.Its built in at address . I have one of my child's slip on sandles I use as a practice aid . I find the large sole of the sandle helps me understand the relationship between the trail hand and the club face staying square through impact . Really enjoying your videos.

Thank you Todd for you're extraordinary fast response to my false perception of Moe's release. I think I am beginning to understand even more when you tell us Moe was a non excessive rotational player altogether as opposes to 99.9 professional players in his day and for that matter; even today. For example many of today's young top players are rotating their lead hip anywhere from 45 to 60 degrees exactly at the point of impact. Ouch! Where as I believe you said Moe's hip rotation was 35 degrees at impact to the ball. Correct? As I told you the other day; at 72 I did feel Moe's feeling of greatness in my own swing thanks to you. I still need more practice and information; so I will keep watching your very generous videos and follow your "rules". If I can ever convince my wife to go to Florida; I will look you up; shake your hands; and, thank you personally. PS : At some point I will film myself and send you a brief link of my feeling of greatness; thanks to you and Moe. Sincerely, Tom

Funny how I watched your previous uploaded video (Fireside Chat) and saw the grip .... Then watched this video... saw and understood my problem why I couldn't properly square the face each and every time.... and why my swing felt awkward... I'm using a traditional golf grip while not using a traditional swing.. I keep mudding the two swings together and find I push or slice the ball almost as often as I hit the ball straight..

You always talk about Moe Norman’s golf swing, and rightfully so. What most of your viewers know or don’t know is how Mr Norman altered his clubs by adding weights to the heads. In effect was able to let the club fly through, hence keeping straighter longer. Norman was way ahead of his time when it came to engineering aspect of golf, which they do now with modern technology. Although an expensive set of clubs make a difference, but only if the golfer is doing what they are suppose to do. Can we actually teach someone’s golf style? From what I’ve seen, there is a matching principle, but mainly everyone is different. Happy wackeldoodling. 😎

@Todd - In your early days of learning before and perhaps with Moe, did you practice unhinging of the right forearm and de-cocking of the wrist? Also, it's my observation with you and Moe that in addition to the torso turning, the mass of the club head contributes to the forearms rolling over and touching, instead of a conscience decision to flip or roll, would you say that's accurate? thanks!

When you place the clubhead away from the ball, the face is open to the target but 90 degrees to the path it will take on the downswing. How do you prevent hitting pushes and not hitting draws or straight shots without some sort of 'covering' or release during impact? David 🐈

Once you're in the proper stance width and have your right arm against the side of your body lean to the right until your fingers are just above the right knee. Once that is achieved, stay in posture and simply bring your trail hand to the club. Your trail hand should be at approximately a 45 degree angle on the grip.

As a student of the game,I have a great deal of interest in golf instruction.There are several clearly different methods of striking a golf ball,from Mike Austin to Moe ,to me these two are at the extremes as one promotes rotate and slap and the other no rotation thru the strike position. I can do both and I find Moes swing for me best 6 thru SW and Austin 5 thru driver. I would appreciate feedback.
@ToddGravesGolf
@ToddGravesGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Here's my two cents. "Rotate and Slap" and No rotation are not (in my opinion) good ways to describe or teach a golf swing. The fact is that all bodies that swing a club are subject to THREE biomechancial variables - rotation, bend and sidebend - during the golf swing motion. The wrists angles create variations (grip) and there are obvious variations in the three metrics. Rotate and slap is a description not quantifiable. No rotation is also descriptive and without quantifying the amount, there is no way that a golf swing has "no rotation". Just because you don't feel rotation doesn't mean that you are not rotating. As you can see my opinion is that you must quantify the instruction and what you think you do is not really what is happening. Not that feel isn't important but I will bet you $1000 that your shorter iron swing and 5 through driver swing are quantifiably the same. You just feel them differently.

@@ToddGravesGolf Thank you for the reply.. Do you agree Austin and Moe had different swings ? For that matter how about Rahm and Hogan ? I think they did and do. About that 1k,you would lose that bet.I back set my wrist and take it back just slightly inside min body rotation going back,pretty steep coming down and trap the ball and a little forearm roll with a moe finish 6 thru SW.I do not work the ball 6 thru sw. 5 thru driver I rotate and cock wrist on back swing a little flat ala Hogan and I sweep the hit with a full finish and forearm roll,I do work the ball with this swing. This is not something new to me,I went to school with Jack and played against him in a lot of amateur events. I was a caddy at Scioto CC where Jack's dad groomed him, I watched many of his lessons and he played with us caddies on Mondays.

@@randolphsnyder1505 Yes. Very different swings but the way I have measured the swing and understand how things work, you can manipulate many things. Yes, you can hinge and change hand actions in the backswing etc however, I will still make the bet on the measurements of the downswing from the top through the finish - I believe your motion would measure the same with "both" swings. It would be fun to see though.

@@ToddGravesGolf You obviously are deep into the mechanics of the golf swing.The reason I use two swings is club length, my arc gets more vertical as shafts get shorter.I would be interested in your take,what with Moe being fully extended at set up and Bryson the same but Austin,Hogan and others not.I dont see much instruction about this and I think it's very important because striking the ball on your clubs sweet spot is paramount. And yes I have tried 1 length shafts and it does not work for me.I have been thinking 3 length shafts might work though just have not got around to it. And yes I am a believer in puring graphite shafts.

@ToddGravesGolf

No. I don't recall Moe ever mentioning what his hands were doing other than things like the pressure in his lead hand (drawing blood) and the trail hand (along for the ride). He did say he would "Pull the Flag" in his finish - so he did mention a sensation about hand direction after impact.

Excellent clarification. So, in other words, the palms of the hands have completed the release of the club from its lag position upon the impact and stay kinda inactive afterwards. What about how the downswing starts. Do the hands/arms try to drop downwards the handle or try to rotate it; A video on that would be interesting.
@ToddGravesGolf
@ToddGravesGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Actually....the trail arm is bent at impact and the trail writs (my right wrist) is still bent backwards (hinged) at impact. As the arm straightens after impact, the wrist completely unhinges.

@@ToddGravesGolf Yes, the right carpus is at an angle with respect the right still bent arm, the left carpus parallel to the shaft, and then they follow what ever is dictated by their already acquired momentum. as you describe 'they skip a rock', than rotate around an axis thru the shaft. As a physicist in profession, I am used to strict description of mechanical terms, so I consider that the moment that the 'hing' has started to be released the ' hing' has ended, like the moment we release a stressed spring, but I see what you mean with a hinged right wrist at impact.
