I have served on the Oksøy class mine hunter, and have to say it is one of the worst ships out there for people that get easily seasick. It gets lifted by the waves, and then slams into the next one in stead of cutting trough it like a normal ship does. And in high wind conditions it is absolutely horrible to be mooring the ship to a dock because the ship has almost no draft and a lot of surface area for the wind to catch, and the air powered side thrusters does almost nothing in those conditions. And the pulleys actually get ripped out of the deck before the mooring ropes brake... And fun fact: The Skjold-class corvette actually have seatbelts in the beds to keep you from falling out of them because of the bad seafaring conditions of the ship where it rides on top of the waves like a rubber dinghy and slams into the next wave and at 50+ knots that gets a little dangerous when sleeping on the top bunk bed...

There was a proposed variant of the Skjold class as vessel with a little more multirole configuration, where the aft missile bay can function as a flexible deck. But with the reduction of number of vessels and not replacing the Hauk class, they had to make them into a more focused vessel

The camo works well. Remember at a coastal base some years ago two of these were out in the fjord, close to the shore. Had to look really hard to spot them.

In Norway we have something called "Missile Kanon båt (MKB)" = Missile cannon boat, some are what these boat initially was called, they replaced after all Storm class some was a Missile cannon boat. But they got the Norwegian classification as Coastal corvette, due to there sea-keeping capability and an armament that is almost as heavy as a corvette and some frigates

Was lucky enough to see two of these moored in our local harbour (East coast Scotland) a few years back (probably part of a NATO exercise). Lovely looking things.

Wow! Missiles with 185km range on such a small ship! I'm sold! There is *definitely* a place for small fast warships like this. They can still pack a real punch as with those long-range missiles! The Russian Navy could be waaay out in the open ocean and one of these things could fire a few missiles at them and still get at them from near the shelter of the fjords! Good stuff!

They could be deadly if able to use Datalink with F-35 as a forward invisible scout providing RL information to the warships. Sadly too few to make a big difference.

Considering most anti ship missiles skim the waves, hiding behind an island should work well. Unless there are some high arc versions I haven't heard about?

@@robjohnson5872 well Norwegian Navy is using datalink trough the entire military, the Navy is using Link 11 and Link 16, making them capable to communicate with any NATO systems, including US. If a soldier far in land see a target an paint it, a Skjold class can fire a NSM (in land attack mode) at that target. Normal strategy is 1 or 2 Skjold class working together with a frigate, where Skjold class work as an extended sensor platform for the frigate, but also give a frigate more option for an attack plan. But at the same time, a Skjold class can defend it self with using the frigates air-defence systems. But as an additional bonus, giving the frigate more time to react to air/surface treath, due to Skjold class Stealth capability, making it a bit more difficult to detect it early on.

@@Ocker3 The NSM dosn't skim like the classic Harpoon or Penguin missiles, it's skimming capability is more clever then the traditional way of just lying low. What it does is it follow the contour of the waves or terrain, where it adjust it's flying height by it self, meaning there is a chance for it to fly between waves! The missiles planes it attack by it self, the only information it need is where there target/targets is (if you fire multiple of them, they will work together and attack from different direction, basically smart AI missiles)

The Norwegians should have bought the RBS15 instead, and we Swedes should have bought a few of these boats as compensation. That would improve the capabilities of both countries.

OK, how could you not love this combat ship. She punches way above her weight class. 276 tonnes and 8 NSM missiles.. Now compare that to the LCS class that has a displacement of 3500 tonnes, and until recently, Hellfire missiles as her only anti ship capability. Now that the LCS is upgunned, she carries also 8 NSM missiles. Oh yes, you can probably buy 10 of Skjold class corvettes for one LCS ship.. OK, I know they are not comparable since Skjold is a pure green water navy ship, but it still puts things into perspective..Anyway, it's great to know these little monsters roam around the Northern wing of NATO, together with the F-35s. Now that the Fins and Swedes are joining in, we can sleep much safer, at least as far as an ex KGB dwarf is concerned. For the other dictator we're gonna need allies with ships that are a bit larger and more sofisticated...

You always have to put it innto perspective. The US navy had the Pegasus class hydrofoils with similar size, weapons, endurance and speed. The class was retired, because the navy never found a role for it. Operating it in the Persian Gulf would have required massive logistic support and for catching drug smugglers it was to expensive to operate. The LCS may have a lot of flaws, but at least it can cross the Atlantic under it's own power.

My goodness. What an unusual vessel but a very clever idea in concept. And both effective against most surface craft as well. Not surprisingly to keep some secrets - though one thing that has changed. The Ukrainian matter has provoked probably an increase of numbers of these. This is a Corvette. And just about the same capacity of operation. As similar more conventional vessels.

I like that rectangular design with enough surface area. It's a tiny coastal boat with enough destructive capabilities against bigger ships. All it lacks is a orlekon air defence system I guess.

The easy way would be to update Leonardo 76mm gun with Strales system and use Dart ammo. It becomes best anti missile gun defence. Dart is radar guided ammo...same as missiles. I think the main problem is that when it is moving so fast...it is hard to use air defence systems. That is why they are not included. Pop out, fire missiles and hide.

The Norwegian navy has suffered 3 times in history in wars it never was or wanted to be part of... For some time the merchant navy was the world's largest, and at 2 points the second largest. Today I'm not sure, and it's also hard to tell, because ships often sail under a different flag to avoid taxes and tolls.

Very very good platform as long as it remains within the fjord environment. In the open ocean, even just a few miles outside of the fjords, the heat signature of its turbines makes it very vulnerable to air attack (mixing the exhaust with cold sea water helps, somewhat, but with the current IR sensors the heat signature can still be picked up at over 20km from an airborne asset).

HAUK class with new NSM missiles upgrade and gatling gun anti ship missile defence , would still be fairly formidable. Skjold could still be targeted with laser guided weapons.

@master mariner Don't know, never been in Norway. Nothing military that doesn't belong to Norway military shouldn't be in the Norway, generally. If exported, it could be an opponent of such vessels.

From Ukraine here, as we can see during these last 3 days - most of russian army is not as it used to be. Scrap metal, badly equipped, and badly motivated. The funniest story is about russia's only aircraft carrier going out of order because of internal fire. Then it was moved to a dry harbor for repairs, crashed the structure, started burning again, and is not repairable anymore. Protect your borders Norway. When you have neighbors like russia, anything can happen. Cheers from Ukraine!

Strange that they didn't give it the ability to launch torpedos and lay mines, and give it some sort of anti aircraft ability while under way. Those improvements would have made this a far more lethal maritime weapons platform.

That would never happen. Norway would never sell the boats to anyone in that region, and it is to far for them to travel there as part of a NATO task force, we (Norway) would send our frigates instead.

The official maximum speed is 60 knots but beeing a military wessel it will obv do quite a bit more than the official speed....

@@m.muratalbayrakoglu978 As a Norwegian, I can say, you will only get a chance to see this much, there are also some videos on Norwegian webside showing the galley and mess area. but nothing more, no one is allowed to see sensitive area. There is a picture somewhere, showing the magazine for the 76mm, but that is nothing special, since they area the same on any ship with 76mm gun

Smyge launched 1992, Skjöld class first launched 1998.

@@jensolsson9666 Before Skjold class, Norway had Oksøy and Alta class mine hunter and minesweeper that also use SES hull, in 1995, but they started the development in the 60-70's While Sweden build the test ship "Smyge", Norway was building a fleet of 4+5 SES ships then later on 6 SES ships. and even before they came, Norway had build 1 test ships, that also went in passenger traffic, it could comfortable transport passengers from A to B at 45+ knots US had a test ship in the 60-70's as one of the earlier one, that could hit almost 100 knots. SES100A and SES100B. The main countries developing the SES technology was USA, UK, Norway and Soviet Union

@@jensolsson9666 The concept of those catamaran corvettes are nothing new to Norway. The Norwegian coast are full of fast catamaran passenger ships. Already around 1980 there were one such catamaran with curtain / air cushion. It travelled with a speed of 40-45 knots in a daily route between Bodø and Tromsø. The travel time was 6 hours compared to 9 -10 hours if you wanted to travel by car. Since it required a lot of fuel no one use that concept today. They cruise instead with 30 - 35 knots and no curtains. Still those ships are thirsty on fuel. Now time has come for changing to catamarans powered by hydrogen/fuel cells. Such are under construction.

I seriously doubt there will be any downsizing in the Norwegian Navy (or any other service for that matter) any time soon. The world has changed drastically since Feb 24th. If anything Norway, along with the rest of the NATO and EU members, will start a massive rearmament program, with defense expenditures reaching those from the Cold War era. Germany is of course the biggest and the most important example of this with a massive 110 billion$ added to the military this year while raising the military expenditure to 2% of the national GDP. Beside the most talked about example, Germany, we can also see a huge increase in spending from Poland. By the latest, still unconfirmed information, they are buying over 100 Abrams tanks and the unbelievable 500 HIMARS systems. Check Republic, Italy and GB are also some of the more known examples. With this increase the European members of NATO alone will become so power so they will be able to defend and defeat any threat from Russia alone, even without the American help. Of course US forces aren't going anywhere and their numbers will raise too, but given the coming threat of China, US forces will have to pivot most of their firepower to the Pacific region...

Thanks for sharing. It is an interesting ship. But, I think the Finnish and Swedish boats are more capable. The Hamina-class has better combat capability.

@Varangian Guard Hamina is much more versatile. It can fight against submarines and air threats, which make the boat more capable. I did not say Hamina has better anti-surface warfare capability. I did just say it has more combat capability. I do my research.

@Varangian Guard I have no problem with the Norwegian doctrines. I just prefer Swedish and Finnish. Their doctrine based on the more versatile vessels is more flexible. I like versatile weapon systems more than single-mission ones. I think they are more useful

@@habahan4257 Well that’s why every class in the Danish Navy have the flex modul system. Which mean I can change the weapon systems quickly. For example the Iver Huitfeldt class can change the missile systems to different purposes.

They costed a fortune to develop and construct so Norway only got a few. We already had 39 other fast attack boats and the few Skjold ships are no solution. It is far better to have 40 than 6 platforms for missiles. They should never have been built.

Bet they regret not making 40-50 of these given the new initiatives to our neighbor in the east. Norway built down our armed capabilities over the last 30 years due to politicians who had no understanding of the concept, you need to build for war to avoid war.

Norway has the money to build more of these ships! Drill.more oil and gas and sell it to Europe. Norway needs to step up its spending in the artic to counteract Russia. Norway should start selling more oil and gas to Europe to help reduce European dependence on Russian oil and gas. Norway cannot just rely on NATO and the US. The F 35 cannot substitute for surface ships in Norway very large coastal size and Artic area of responsibility.

Holland is an area/region of Netherlands, but for some reason, specially older people call it Holland. Some of the reason can be due to where they was deployed after WW2 and it just got stuck

Meh... most navies deploy frigates or destroyers in a pair. Most frigates or destroyers have two helicopters each. The Skjold is outclassed by simple helicopters.

@@Wickwire86 Hey, if you're impressed by these "corvettes" then more power to you. Me? They are missile "boats" and that's it. In the video they say the only anti-aircraft capability is a few missiles and that system has to be set up by the sailors. The Europeans skimped for years on their defense. Look what that got them: Russia. They have to be able to defeat Russian P-270 Moskit anti-ship missile then you may want to have a CIWS or else make sure your life insurance is paid.

@@drinksnapple8997 Skjold class have them as manpad, as he said in the video, can be deployed and ready within 60 seconds. and it is only for defense nothing else. Normally Skjold class will work together with a frigate. Where the frigate give aircover, even when the frigate can't see the target, thanks to Link11 and Link16. What the system basically do, is that when a Skjold class detect an target, it can order a missile launch from the frigate and guide the missile to the target,.

The reason for it getting the classification as a corvette is several but also an "interesting" topic here in Norway, but some of the reason is: - similar armament as 90's corvettes and some frigates. (When Skjold class was designed) (at least in surface to surface combat) - Sea capability as an corvette, can handle rough sea better then most corvettes, some tend to be overloaded. - It's capability to attack both surface targets and land targets, individually or at the same time. something you first start to see on larger frigates - it's air-defence capability is similar to corvettes that are focused toward ASW and ASuW task (But relay bad compared to AAW Corvettes) down side, is it's limited AAW capability, thus it operate together with an frigate, or act as the first ship in the area and can then give sensor/radar/target data back to other ships. it's size is also a downsize, wince Norway retired 20 Storm class and 15 Hauk class and have originally 12 Skjold class (ended up with only 6). I would have lengthened Skjold class with 10 meters (reducing top speed somewhat), for capability to carry a limited reload for NSM, and have at least a 2-4 short-VLS for ESSM (quad pack).

The reason Norway cut the boat after the cold war removed most of the surface threat was not money, Norway only ever gets even more filthy rich off their oil(top GDP per-capita or something like that 2 decades running) money is no object. Even when they where going to have 12 that is not a lot but this is quality over quantity to fit Norway's demographic limits. What happened is after the cold war their requirements didn't get reduced but rather massively increased to doing over the horizon blue water navy stuff in coalition with the US, not least of which was the BMD mission which post cold war was much more the threat from Russia rather then their rusted surface fleet so the Norwegian Navy's need changed from short range missile boats to long endurance blue water surface combatants with with powerful capital ship level air defense. Contrary to saving money Norway instead upgraded to more of their more expensive aegis frigates, opting out the coastal mosquito navy for their current Blue water conventional fleet cause they can afford to be a top tier naval power, certainly in Europe.

This ship can operate in open sea, and it does it every day. and it does it at high speed to. One time one of the Skjold class, left Bergen, after having a nice breakfast, for then arrive in Tromsø, Northern Norway, for a nice dinner. that is almost the entire length of the Norwegian west coast, and they did that out in the open sea. So instead of writing bullshit, keep your mouth shut. Just the crossing of the Atlantic was mostly done at speed over 40 knots, since that is it's most economical speed. US Navy had placed tankers to meet them for refiling at several places. The distance it over 3000 Nautical miles, The skjold class range at economical run, is around 800 Nautical miles

im so annoyed by the fact that amries always get the new nice shit and invetions, wich will basically never get to civil transportation sectors ... or maybe like 15 years later. get me one of those hover boats as civil ferry. or even as my yacht ( not that i hjave so much money left ... but would be nice if could potentially buy it.) but nooo civil transportatin is stuck with horses and carts for years ... the only thing new we got is fully electrical cars .... and more efficent planes :/

.... eh you can get them as civilian, just not with the same design as Skjold class. There have been several passenger version as well, but hey got dropped after a while, due to much higher operation and service cost than conventional catamaran with bigger engine for the same speed performance.

Really both of you are right -- its very similar to the US Navy Cyclone Coastal Patrol boats. If you added missiles... which make it more of a Fast Attack craft. Its called Corvette because of how NATO classes warships. Corvette being the smallest "fleet" warship. The only oddity is that they didn't do what Turkey did and RAM missiles for Air Defense. SeaRAM would be a nice upgrade. Anything warship "smaller" than a Frigate that is a big enough to get named.. is a Corvette. (or Aviso)

The term Norway use, is Coastal Corvette, the main reason is: - it's smaller than a corvette. - it can operate in open sea, (one of them traveled under own power, from Norway to USA approx 2500-3000 Nautical miles). - it max range at cruise speed is 800 Nautical miles at 40 knots. - it was designed to operate close to the coast and use it's fjords and islands. - and when operating close to land, it is easier for it to do air-defence, since it will have direct communication to all types of equipment/radars etc. thanks to Link11 and Link16 - doesn't have endurance of a corvette, but have more endurance then the MKB's (missile Kannon båt = Missile Cannon boat) it was replacing. The Link11 and Link16 is part of the network warfare system, what it basically do, is that when a skjold class detect a target, it can give fire order and guide a missile from a frigate to it's target, without the frigate seeing the target.
