★ Who are we?
We're Chad and Zaynah Miner! For the past two-something years we have been traveling the U.S. in our tiny home on wheels with our two cats, Tavi and Akina. The main reason we are living in a van was to get out of our crushing rent in Boulder, Colorado and re-gain our freedom and time. Chad has been a professional photographer aiming to make his side hustle his main hustle for several years now, and van life has given him the opportunity to make this transition (which is super exciting!!). Zaynah has always dreamed of living minimally, traveling as much as possible, and living in a tiny home off grid somewhere with a fully sustainable setup. We plan to continue traveling for the next few years in our van home to save for our long term goal of a sustainable home on our own land - so please subscribe and join the adventure! We also have over 200 videos of our time traveling full time in a skoolie conversion so if you want to see the various vehicles we've lived in check that out under the playlists tab. All the best xx

Some ppl's life are so mind numbingly boring and dull that everything is offensive to them, that woman repeatedly saying 'we pay a lot of money to live here' I could just hear the decades of resentment of all the years working in some job she hated for the privilege of her house (and mortgage). Thats what it comes down to, they think that you don't deserve the privilege of being there because you haven't had to endure their shitty life or 'paid your dews' like they had to so rather than experience regret they turn it into anger towards you and the freedom you have that they never will.

Jayme Capurso 100% agree with this. Plus it was really disgusting how the girl was trying to explain her mom’s medical situation and the guy was like “I DONT CARE AT ALL!!” Wow. What a horrible human being. All that over a bus parked on the street. People really need to get a life. Very rude and I cannot believe the commenters who side with that ignorant couple even an inch. Unfortunately bitter people tend to hate people who have made a happy life with themselves. I would have told to him to fuck right off and if he approached my bus again I’d call police for harassment. They can’t ticket you for sleeping there, where is the evidence? Ridiculous.

If that's his choice so be it, but to be unkind to ZEAL is ridiculous! Maybe if they they thought they could park there for a week or so, but to be there long enough to visit her Mother? Really!!! hitchhiker agreed. It’s sad and it blows my mind that he could be so rude for no real reason and not even be willing to hear her or understand when she was trying to explain the situation. He was on the offensive right from the get go and nothing anybody could have said would have changed his mind. And him threatening the police against them was shameful. Let’s waste the time of law enforcement for no reason other then his obvious and apparent ignorance. Having lived in a traditional house our entire lives my husband and I can’t wait to convert our bus into our tiny home and live a simpler life all around. You guys were parked in a public street..If you blocked his driveway that's one thing ( I myself am guilty of going outside and cursing out people blocking my driveway) but you were on a public street not disturbing anyone.... If it's such a big repetitive problem for them they should speak to the town and have notices posted on the streets. The one thing that did worry me is going to his house....depending on the state you might be be breaking the law and are putting yourself in danger. Some states have old blue laws on the books that give permission to shoot someone trespassing on ones property...so in the future please don't put yourself in such a situation. As far as the ticket goes you should be able to fight it very easy. 1. You were parked there for a short time visiting someone in the vicinity (therefore you weren't just pulling up and staying in the area for no reason) 2.you were not in the vehicle and if you have smart phones your GPS will show your location so you can use that to show you were not technically living in the vehicle when the ticket was issued. 3. There is no notice stating you can't park there
@LivingZEAL
@LivingZEAL 6 жыл бұрын
Very good points raised, Leo. We have talked to the HOA board on numerous occasions about this man, and he has been told not to call the cops, and why we are there visiting. He is just trying to stick a thorn in our side repeatedly... why... I don't know... he must have a lot of extra time on his hands. As for going to his house, that obviously did not work. His wife was very receptive to discuss the issues with me that's why I continued having the conversation, but the man was extremely irritated.. CO is a stand your ground state I believe.. so this is something I will definitely consider if ever in this position again... not worth putting my life at risk to attempt finding common ground with crazies. Thanks for your comment. We are definitely going to contest this ticket, and will be letting you all know the outcome of that.
@NunYaO

As long as they approached the front door from public access & left if asked to do so by the owner it's technically not trespass or a 'stand your ground/castle doctrine' issue. As far as the ticket for living in the vehicle, if you weren't on the premises when the ticket was issued and/or past the 48-hour permitted parking statute, the ticket is invalid. Zaynah, if the guy continues to harass you when you go visit your mom, sue him in small claims for harassment and libelous behavior for repeatedly calling you hippie-dopers-you know he used the same language with others whom he spoke to about you. FOIA any bodycam footage from any cops called by him and it'll prove it - as well as prove you weren't on the bus at the time of the ticket/tow notice.

@@NunYaO You can't sue for harassment or libel in small claims court, you can only sue for actual monetary or property losses. And you need proof of the loss.
@NunYaO
@NunYaO 2 жыл бұрын
@@golden.lights.twinkle2329 both harassment and libel can cause verifiable losses...those losses can be recovered in small claims, when below the courts monetary limit, or in open civil court. The cost of the ticket, if fines were assessed, as well as lost income to attend traffic court, even if no fines were levied, are just one example of actual losses that could result from an individuals pattern of harrassment and libel. I suggested small claims because the amount of the ticket and any lost income wouldn't have exceeded the maximum limits of the court. Furthermore, in some instances, libel can effect ones ability to earn...and that's absolutely quantifiable; especially if you've already succeeded in securing a favorable decision from a small claims suit for the cost of the ticket...i'm not sure if you are an attorney; but if you are, for the sake of your future clients, start thinking like one!

Liberal cities are passing laws to prohibit mobile living and off grid living while conservative cities are promoting it. I would’ve thought it would be the other way around. In LA it’s now illegal to sleep in your car while Idaho, the most backward state I’ve ever been to, is zoning areas for tiny house communities. I live in a bus and I have learned to stay away from cities in general but especially liberal cities and any kind of manicured neighborhood or subdivision. It’s been very interesting to see the dramatically different response I’ve received .... I hate to categorize like this but liberal cities have almost taken everything I own via towing my vehicle and handing out tickets while in conservative states like Idaho and Texas and Tennessee people were very friendly.... even given me money and food without me asking or needing help. One guy gave me $300 dollars Another person gave me a beautiful antique dresser. I’m not politically minded but just wanted to share my experiences. Stay out of liberal environments and maintain your freedom.

That’s bullshit. Of course a crowded “liberal” city like LA is going to have laws against this. Just like the three people in Bumfukt, Tennessee haven’t the need for such a law. This really needs explaining since tribalism eats away at the logic portion of one’s brain, though.

Andrew Pearson Except this liberal society is now on the fast track to fascism thanks to conservatism, not the other way around. The height of conservatism is controlling how people live their lives and think, under the guise of “christian morals.” Liberalism values freedom of thought and expression. Conservatism values hive thinking and assimilation. Just thought I’d clear that up for anyone reading. ;)

Hi Guys! Wow! He's going to die an old bitter hate-filled man while you are out seeing the beautiful scenery and being happily in love. I think that alone is poetic justice. I would like to make a great idea come to life based on your story... Let's have a Bus-In on that street this summer! Every bus within a hundred miles pulls in at 6am, lines both sides of the street, respectfully enjoys the scenery of such a neighborhood (I hear that some people pay a lot of money to live there *haha*) then at 8pm everyone drives slowly into the sunset waving to the nice couple in the pricey house. Preferably a day that they are having a nice dinner party at their house! I live in SLC... I'll be there for sure!

Maybe they do & l just haven't seen it much! Not only do "we" dream, but we're sensitive too! Another wonderful way to be!!! "The next time you see a beautiful Sunset...remember that feeling! Many times it will heal your Soul when someone or something hurts it, just close your eyes & see the Sunset! The LORD begins our day with a breath taking Sunrise & ends our day with a breath taking Sunset. People that don't have Jesus Christ in their heart are unkind (l don't mean religious)! How pleasing that is to me to share your Mothers name, thank you for telling me!!!! Go, beautiful people & live your dream with another day!!!! Love to you always judie

You could smooth things over by offering to whip up one of your home made off-grid meals -- LOL! This guy really needs your 4 questions interview about his neighborhood so we can all find out what he really doesn't like and what he really wants to change. Since the video shows the street signs, I did look it up, then I looked up the subdivision info. This schmuck should have bought a house in the MIDDLE of the subdivision where cars can't park on the road instead of at the edge of the subdivision on sided with public streets.

It’s a shame that common curtesy and basic respect is no longer a part of our society. Just because someone is choosing to do something differently from you doesn’t make it wrong. I’m personally appalled at how this individual treated the both of you and hope that one day he looks back on how he acted and realizes how out of line he was. For the both of you please know that this incident isn’t about you personally, but is demonstrating the differing viewpoints and change that is currently taking place in our society. Chad and I were just having that discussion about the changes occurring within society today regarding alternative living... how it's soon going to become a necessity for some... yet illegal for many. We hope to part of the growing movement to push society forward and make this lifestyle more accessible for all -- when people are happy, truly happy, living their best life, the whole of society benefits. The "get off my lawn" couple are complaining that they paid too much for their property. If they are offended by that and the fact that they hate everyone, they should just find a deserted island. Sending positive energy. SO FUNNY! I lived in that neighborhood when I first moved to Fort Collins in 2013 and do not know where to start in terms of how strict and uptight that specific neighborhood is. The HOA will ticket you if you leave your christmas lights/decorations outside immediately after New Years. Now that there is a brand new HS getting built right next to that neighborhood, I hope it drives the old folks out... Would recommend driving either farther North towards Wellington or East towards Greeley for a better night stay!

I know this is an old video, but I just found you guys & I give you both a lot of credit to follow your dream. I have two sets of relatives who retired & have been traveling the US for over 10 years in very large coaches w/ tow behind vehicles. My uncle & his wife had sold their home & live in their coach year round. They have a mailing address in a popular western state which has no income tax, then their mail gets forwarded to wherever they are living at that time. One cool thing I leaned from my uncle is that by joining a Moose Lodge, he can park at any lodge in the nation for either free or for very cheap...just something to consider. KOA campgrounds might be another option to consider. They've been through every state & work as tour guides once per year in Alaska, which they've also done in other states, including the Everglades in Florida. They basically get paid to do some traveling. As far as that couple went...It really had nothing to do with the both of you. I could tell that they had some old, deep, built up anger that probably goes back to the 60's. They probably felt threatened & thought that your friends would start moving in w/ their vans if they didn't nip it in the bud, lol. He probably had a bad acid trip once from that time his cousin got him stoned 50 years ago...and he's been living in fear ever since. Anyway, best of luck! Eventually I plan to move to the Big Island...I believe its more affordable to live between Hilo & the Puna district than most other parts. Aloha!

What they view from their private property is there problem... no one told them to pick that house on that street. They claim they pay a lot of money there but you also pay a lot of money registering the vehicle to use public roads. And if there’s no, no parking posted then anyone and any type of vehicle can park there. See the public sidewalk near the road... from that to the road doesn’t even belong to him, so technically you could pull out chairs and sit there. He can complain about his view all he wants, he controls his eyes and where he looks and if he doesn’t like it he can look elsewhere.

We are such a diseased society. Compassion is always at the bottom of the list, and both of their go to lines are "we paid a lot of money for our house", so in turn they are saying money is the most important thing, and way more important than your situation. But remember, the law is always going to side with the property owners, so if you don't want to see a law passed, out lawing that very way of life, than stay out of those situations. Out of sight out of mind. Sucks. But that is what the whole mobile community is facing, in place after place. Forget about your rights, because they can be easily replaced, then what? So maybe walk a little further, to avoid the drama, and future draconian legislation.

Thank you for sharing this video, it is quite upsetting when the general public shuts themselves out from understanding alternative lifestyles. I, too, have dealt with this on numerous occasions and, as such, have a solution/suggestion that I’ve found to work quite well. When you arrive to whichever township you are going to park in, first go to the local Police station and talk to the CO. Let him know your plans in full, (where you plan to park, how long, and for what reasons), and ask him if this is ok. Also ask if he has any alternate suggestions. Most, but not all, will be much more receptive to this approach than a phone call. It is a lot more hassle, but it will keep you from getting most tickets, or make fighting one in court quite a bit easier. I have lived in vehicles of varying condition for numerous years in many different states and have found this to be the best recourse for avoiding trouble. Hope things go better for your near future and perhaps I’ll see you out on America’s blue roads someday soon.

Some people will have pre-conceived ideas of vehicle dwellers: stoners, hippies. I guess he doesn't want any free love going on in HIS neighbourhood!! He was NOT at Woodstock!! Personally, I'd move so I could drop acid and listen to my Pete Seeger records in peace. 😉

That old fart needs to be sued. I'm sure a case could be made since he surely lied to police and you got an unjust ticket that you now have to take time out of your day and money out of your pocket to contest. He should be liable for the cost of fuel and the cost of your time. I would estimate that your professional time is worth about $100 an hour. I would take him to small claims court after researching exactly what I could sue him for in order to teach him a lesson.

Next time in a similar situation do not be shy about using your camera and your platform. People become much more respectful when their actions are held accountable. Remember the laws are there to protect you just as much as any cantankerous old man. If they are so offended and they'd like to change the laws in that neighborhood, that's on their time and energy, but should not be yours. Contest your ticket, absolutely, and remember you have rights too. Welcome home :/

Judie, I personally believe in government. If his community would like the law changed and in doing there is a broader community discussion, I am happy to pay taxes to enforce it, just as if the nomadic movement joins together for protections under the law, I am overjoyed to contribute. To me that is being an American, and my view doesn't alway win, but I appreciate being a part of the conversation.

Very true. Chad thought to film the whole thing but I told him not too.. I guess because I was scared to piss the guy off even more, but you're right that might have worked in adverse had we pulled out the camera. The guy made some reference to "peace and love" hippydom!! What is this the 50's, the 60's? That's just bigotry. I haven't heard a hippy slur since I was a kid and I'm 55! Good luck. I think more time and activism has to be spent on the politics and legal issues associated with camping, vehicular living and nomad living.

Hey, what happened stinks for sure. You folks clearly know the law and were within the law. But knowing this spot has caused problems multiple times in the past, why not park further down the road to avoid this area? just curious.
@LivingZEAL
@LivingZEAL 6 жыл бұрын
We have tried that a few times, the reason we parked there is because it's at the very corner end of the neighborhood... so in our mind we are trying to avoid as many people as possible by parking where we did. Although, this man was clearly not the person we wanted to be parked next too.... At this point, we are just going to avoid this neighborhood indefinitely and find a place 4miles away to park the bus, and then take our bikes out to drive and see my mom. It's an extra step to take but if it means not dealing with this toxic individual that is just fine with us.

Much like leaving an open bag of chips on the couch and the dog getting into it, you set yourself up for failure. Parking in a "fancy" neighborhood is asking for trouble. Being a home owner and a Skoolie owner I can see both sides. We have people parking cars on our property all the time. It becomes incredibly frustrating. I also understand your frustration. However, the general public looks at Skoolies differently than they do RV's. If you had parked a standard RV there you would have gotten a less judgmental, although not less hostile reaction. People perceive RV's as expensive and therefore "more stable" people own them. Skoolies have a much less "mainstream" reputation and are considered to be a vehicle of the less conventional. That alone can upset people. To be honest, you do present yourself's as "hippie types" which is cool and all, but don't get bent when people that don't know you assume you possess the stereotypical traits that are associated with "hippies". I mean, don't dress like a cowboy and then be offended when people treat you like a cowboy. And the ticket is a tool of the "man" and more for retribution and deterrence. It is designed to irritate you and discourage you from returning. A cop, and we all appreciate their service, has the ability to make your life very complicated and uncomfortable.

Sorry this happened to you but.....if you're there every few months people will notice you. If you mother lives 2.5 blocks away why not park in front of HER house? Why would you be taking your laundry outside....planning to walk to the laundromat? If your there that frequently I can see where they assume you are sleeping in it and you most likely are. Going to the home to continue the conversation v. just moving your rig was very immature IMO. What some people do for ratings is beyond me.
