Beautiful! When I saw 'from The High Pass' in this title, I discovered that this piece was written for a 1982 Soviet movie of that name, so I learnt something new. And I read that "Skoryk said he wrote it to convey his understanding of tragedy and profound sadness". You play it so wonderfully in that spirit: there is an ineffable sadness in every note you play, and even in your face as you play. And, while the invasion of Ukraine now is a barbaric outrage, it is surely a tragedy for its victims, which makes this piece feel appropriate. The right piece, the right time, the right cellist. Just glorious. Thank you. 🤩 😍

В основі кінофільму лежить трагічна історія прикарпатської сім'ї. Мама- комуністка, а чоловік, син і дочка на стороні УПА (Української повстанської армії). Армію підтримував український народ. Радянська імперія вважала воїнів УПА бандитами. Цензура не пропускала на екран правду. Режисер фільму звернувся до композитора М.Скорика створити таку музику, яка мала розповісти про те, про що не пропустила московсько- імперська цензура. Віолончелістка грала не смичком, а мелодія лилася з її серця. Чудесне виконання. Дякую Бравіссімо !!!

The movie is called Ukrainian soviet in Wikipedia, but it is rather Ukrainian. In fact, it was made in Ukraine by a Ukrainian movie director and tells about, as you say, the tragic fight of the Ukrainians against the soviets, who tended to destroy Ukrainians and all sort of culture and national heritage that Ukrainians have as a nation. And the melody is sad because the ukrainian family gets separated and killed by and because of the soviets.

This music was commissioned during Soviet times in 1981 for a movie "High Pass" about establishment of Soviet in Western Ukraine, very pro-Soviet movie. How is music connected to plots, movies, narrative, commissions? Probably there is very little if any connections. This is a lovely melody indeed. What are other works of Skoryk? He was a graduate of Moscow Conservator, his mentor was Soviet composer Kabalevsky, Skoryk also performed some research on harmonies of Prokofiev, but I don't hear any influence of any of them.

When Denysenko filmed "High Pass", he knew that his movie would be censored, and he wouldn't be able to create it in the manner he would like. So he asked Skoryk to create the music to explain what exactly was censored. The story of family tortured and divided by Nazis and then by Soviet regime.

After everybody is dead and could not call you a liar you invented stories serving you agenda. This melody is just a melody, it is not a program music. If it was what you say, we would musical quotes and musicologist, much more educated than you and me would explain it long time ago. The plot of the movie is well known, the melody is lovely and could suite any plot and any story. People like you are inventing everything to suite your pathetic, provincial agenda. I'll tell your "story" tomorrow to my friends how a professional musician, a student of Kabalevski, failed to "code" a message and instead created a lovely melody.
