SkyDrive performed the first public flight demonstration of its SD-03 eVTOL on Aug. 25, 2020. The flight took place at the 10,000-square-meter (approximately 2.5-acre) Toyota Test Field, which is one of the largest test fields in Japan and home to the company’s development base. The single-seat SD-03 took off in the early evening and circled the field for about four minutes. A pilot was at the controls but a computer-assisted control system helped ensure flight stability and safety while technical staff at the field monitored flight conditions and aircraft performance at all times as backup. It is probly only noisy when its over your head for the weight that it displaces its fairpy quiet for a multirotor this is just prototype stage blade pitch and length are easy to fix for this the prpbly have a nice flat pitch that wont rip the air up and make it more maneuverable and jerky they just want to see it all work then they can tinker with all the other stuff later in its development

Has anyone researched what “motorized” vehicles were like at the beginning? This is the start. Like everything else, people’s ingenuity and technology will iron out the kinks and in 50 years this will seem like a 3 wheeled motorized bicycle

@Kent Arnold You literally just said the use. It's extremely useful for emergency services like ambulances and I'll also add, police. Also a personal flying transport is incredibly useful. I don't believe everyone will have something like this, nor should the average person just be allowed to have a flying vehicle, but for people who can afford it, I don't see why not. People are already allowed to own private jets and helicopters. This would be similar, just more convenient.
@johnmonsterwatercolour
@johnmonsterwatercolour 3 жыл бұрын
Kent Arnold don’t forget: where there’s money to be made, American ingenuity will find a way. I see freight transport an industry where costs can perhaps be reduced and therefore profits increased. And others, in business, will find applications that will create new industries. This is what history has shown and will definitely repeat itself for this reason

I'm 62 years old and I remember flying cars featured in Popular Mechanics over and over again. They said it was only a few years before these would be in widespread use. My father who was born in 1935 had a book on aircraft of the day. And of course it had a car / airplane that would be produced in just a few years.

There's that but also that this design looks like it could easily get a motorway conversion because it already has enough power to drive wheels. I'm just wondering if it's more practical to carry 4 small wheels and swap off the rotor blades. Kind of intentional..... The scaffolding and mesh is likely there to intentionally disable the quadcopter in the case of a malfunction or loss of control so that bystanders and onlookers aren’t injured behind the glass. It allows for a reasonable barrier while still allowing natural elements into the test pad that are needed for testing in more realistic conditions.

@@jimyeats sigh. U obviously dont fly a drone. Open props don't "disable" the drone when they touch a solid. The unit will tilt and crash. Double props aren't meant as a reserve but as a power boost given the weight and speed desired. There are always risks in flying near solids, even a single wire is dangerous, no matter how the drone is steadied on hover. Risk can b mitigated by prop guards that'll protect them if the drone strays. Welcome.

@@peterclark4685 For this design, I would think a hyperbolic shaped cage shroud (like an hourglass) would work consisting of an array of wire spokes forming to the shape of the shroud connected to metal rings at the top and bottom. The spokes would mostly be aligned vertically and spaced narrow enough to keep someone from bumping into the blades but wide enough to allow a good deal of airflow. I don't know enough about aerodynamics to say a solid shape would be capable of helping create thrust, so I'm thinking about allowing the maximum about of airflow. The wire cage would be strong enough to prevent serious damage or even flexible enough to provide a good amount of deflection in case of a collision with an object.

It never said it was a flying car. Adding wheels and electric motors to power the wheels, and everything else necessary to drive it on the streets would just add weight and bulk to a prototype that isn't a practical aircraft in the first place. This is just a technology demonstrator, better more energy dense batteries are necessary before something like this becomes practical, let alone capable of transitioning to ground driving.
