Join us for the Autumn Tour of Skylarks Garden in Kent, South East England. This beautiful berry-laden landscape, with its bountiful harvest of Rosa rugosa hips, includes a mix of formal and wild elements. In this wonderful garden, wildlife habitats are key, including a wildflower meadow, a giant woodpile, lots of logs, and a perfectly proportioned pond supporting newts and frogs.
Skylarks garden has been created over the last ten years by Gertie, Rex and Ellie, who transformed a former farmer’s field from arable monoculture into a diverse ecosystem for a richer, more wildlife-friendly environment, using recycled materials, will-power and muscle-power to make the garden as sustainable and hospitable as possible.
Nerine bowdenii are a colourful feature of this autumn garden.
Professional advice on the optimal planting times for Nerine dry bulbs varies from early spring to late summer. The RHS advise purchasing and planting dry bulbs in late summer, four inches apart, with the neck of the bulb above ground, in a slightly sheltered place. The RHS growing guide gives detailed information www.rhs.org.uk/plants/nerine/...
Nerine is pronounced two different ways on the RHS video (link below), and three different ways by growers and sellers in general! How do you like to pronounce Nerine?! • How to grow Nerines fo...

I think all of nature needs a rest some seasons. Theyre not unhappy, just taking care of themselves, like self preservation. Compost and mulch will aide in any trees needing some love.😊

We appreciate your wise words and perspective: in self-preservation the apple tree has shrugged off its leaves to lighten the load and focus on its inner vitality. Don’t we all need to do this sometimes!

Such a beautiful garden even better that it's been left to go slightly wilder. ( Unfortunately due to mature age).

I think perhaps we all get a little wilder as we age, Skylarks garden being no exception! Thank you for your lovely comment Pat, sending our best wishes.

Funny you should say that, our aquilegia go where we've planted the hellebores.

That’s so interesting! Hellebores are deep rooted whereas aquilegia have a shallow root system, so maybe that makes them particularly harmonious together, or perhaps they confer benefits to one another that we don’t yet understand.

Greetings from the U S! Lovely! The Nerine Bowdenii is gorgeous. I'll have to investigate if it will grow here in Zone 6a! Your videos are beautfully presented and I appreciate all the very helpful info!

Hello and thank you for your lovely comment, Meg! The Royal Horticultural Society class Nerine bowdenii as hardy down to between -15 and -10 degrees Celsius, or between 5 and 14 Fahrenheit. So my understanding is that Zone 6a temperatures would exceed the hardiness limits. We wonder if growing nerines in containers to enjoy in autumn and then moving them to a more protected space for the winter season could work? Sending best wishes to the U.S. from Kent, U.K.

Thansk for this intel@@ApplePeaFernSea! I will keep your suggestion in mind for down the road. My focus now is creating perennial beds for a new home I moved to 2 years ago. I went from 1/10th of an acre in Boston to 1.4 acres that are entriely unlandscaped in CT so I have my work cut out for me! A dream come true for me really and I am soaking up all the great garden ideas and advice from the UK! Its always illuminating to learn from seasoned gardners! Keep up the good work!
