In 1995-6 the Coast Guard closed it's facilities on the Island and relocated. In 2004-5 Governors Island opened to the public from June to October. The decision was made to start redevelopment of the island with a design competition for new parks and public open space. FDNY took over coverage of the island in 2003 staffing the island year round until about 2006-07 until staffing & budget cuts. Since then FDNY only staffs the island in the summer months from End of April to End of October on the Weekends and when special events occur. The FDNY will staff the Island with 1 Engine Company (Engine 525) and the EMS Manhattan Boro Gator. 3 Firefighters 1 ECC & Officer Report to Manhattan Boro Command and take the Ferry over for the Day Tour from 0900-1800 adless a special event they may stay longer but not over night as there is nowhere for the firefighters to sleep as they are basically in a trailer. Governors Island is open year round now but Fire Protection is only staffed in the summer months & weekends. During any other time that Fire Protection is not on the island Engine 4 / Tower Ladder 15 have to Respond to the Ferry and await the ferry to respond over to the Island. Usually Marine 6 will respond directly to the Island and pick up their Gator that's stored net to the pier and Respond first due awaiting Manhattan Companies via ferry. For during the Night and when the Ferry is unavailable Marine 1 or Marine 9 will respond to the Ferry and pick up members and take them over to the island. The Island doesn't have ant fulltime residents only Security, Ferry Operator, and whoever rents the cabins & tents over night but that's under 150 people on the island from 2200 to 0700 hours. Security provides 1 EMT at all times so they will have a EMT on the island year round, but no fire coverage nor EMS help as it's only 1 person. As the island is not that busy for calls it does take some time for Manhattan companies to get over to the island via ferry. Possible in the future a Full Time Staff will be put onto the Island considering the response time when any day of the week not knowing the amount of people that will be going to the Island. If they decided to have a full time unit for Fire and EMS services they would need to build a firehouse as the firefighters don't have sleeping capabilities in the trailer they are currently in.
The staffing only requires 3 Firefighters, 1 ECC and a Company Officer so that can't properly another company only Engine, Gator and the Van for Transport. For EMS Calls 2 FFs will jump on the gator and the other 2 FFs & Officer will Respond in the Manhattan Boro Van. For Fire Calls they all jump on the Engine Company and ride regular Positions Officer, Chauffer, Nozzle, Backup, Door, (Control Firefighter not manned) Reserve Engine 519, 503, Reserve Ladder 705, 709, 710 are manned by 1st Battalion Companies and will respond to the scene on the Island if the ferry is not available. The Ferry that can transport apparatus is stored on the island and ferry operator sleeps on the island and is suppose to be available during all hours. The ferry can transport up to 2 Engines & 2 Ladders so normally Engine 4, 6 Tower Ladder 15, Ladder 10 & Battalion 1 will go over as first apparatus.
