The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is a game ripe with villains and evil doers. However not every antagonist encountered in Skyrim is actually evil, some are just victims of circumstance, or even acting in the right. So today we explore Skyrim's lore and story to dissect 5 bad guys who weren't actually bad, just misunderstood in The Elder Scrolls 5.

I think it's made clear that Commander Maro isn't technically a bad guy. Even though he is the antagonist of the Dark Brotherhood quest line, YOU are the murderous sociopath intent on ending an empire (much like the Mythic Dawn in Oblivion). He's doing his job: protect the peace, and protect the emperor.

Well, at the end the assasin was just following orders, doing his job, not like he had much of a choice, and the dark brotherhood for accepting the contract, i feel a bit bad for maro tho,

joe the sheep Well no, but isnt like he knowed what he was getting into, i mean yes, killing people and stuff, but to murder and emperor, you need to know that as a member of a sect you're ruled by a hella strict code unlike the thieves guild, once you in, you cant just say: hey yo i didnt sign up for this shit..im out An assasin is obligated to follow orders, specially if they come from a sacred talking corpse :P

there is a proverb about freedom being the gift and the burden of mankind at the same time (i dont recall it word-by-word but this is the essence). The logic behind the proverb is that, unlike animals a human being cannot choose to not choose. Even a slave can choose: Slavery or a gruesome death, usually but the point is that noone cant simply refuse choice even if the choice is unbearably hard to make. That much for the phylosophical part. Now gamewise: U can simply choose to not progress the story further. Also the tenets in Skyrims DB are pretty much neglected so its reasonable to not get in trouble for not following them (in fact Astrid would favor you to not follow the "empire-assasination-Plot").

Sabina Q But they’re notorious for these kinds of assassinations. If you murder one of their marks, you aren’t exactly an innocent bystander yourself. You kinda have whatever happens coming. You’re given two chances to not join them by either never meddling with their business in the first place or never going to the sanctuary if Astrid is still alive.

With Braith, I didn't know the relationship between her and her parents. I always thought she would bully that boy because she said, "I wouldn't pick on him if he just kissed me." I always pegged it as a crush and she didn't know how to express herself.

Just sounds like Braith was being a bitch, I always punch her then take the fine. Like Grelod, there's no way to actually scold them or take them to jail (How cool could that be? One person I felt mis-understood: Emperor Titus Mede II. Think about it, as the target of the Dark Brotherhood questline and the guy who signed the Whitegold Concordant he receives a lot of hate. But when you get down to it he didn't have much of a choice in signing the WGC, being as his army was too exhausted to fight (Yeah where were the Alik'r then?) and he needed stability in the Empire. Now some councillor wants him dead, but why? We know the Thalmor are shifty, so what if it's them wanting him dead to get a more pliable leader on the throne and had an agent in the Council make an offer to the Brotherhood. So with his final hours, what does he do? Instead of fighting back, he pleas with you to kill the contractor knowing it likely they were the Thalmor agent! It's only a theory, but using his life to stall the Thalmor plot would be quite honourable, no? :P
@DoctorPringles
@DoctorPringles 6 жыл бұрын
I don't know if he's misunderstood, really. People like to say he had no choice but to sign the White-Gold Concordat, but I think Hammerfell proved that the Dominion could be defeated. And they *were* fighting alongside the Empire up until that treaty, after which they just continued fighting. The Empire abandoned Hammerfell, not the other way around. Ultimately, I still side with the Empire because it's the only realistic way to achieve victory over the Dominion... but it needs a stronger leader than Titus Mede II.
@MazrimTaim
@MazrimTaim 6 жыл бұрын
Please stop acting like Hammerfell defeated the full might of the Aldmeri Dominion. Tulius's dialogue shows that most of the forces of the Empire and the Dominion are held up at their borders, meaning that the force that was defeated by the Redguards probably isn't any bigger than the force that the Empire spared to stop Ulfric.
@commandergame
@commandergame 6 жыл бұрын
Hammerfell didn't really defeated the dominion they only fought them to a stalemate and that was only possible because the empire dismissed all redguards in the legion who then of course would go to fight in Hamerfell, through this the it would have cost the dominion much more resources to take Hammerfell resources they need to fight teir true enemy the Empire. Depsite all of this the Redguards victory was meanigless half of Hammerfell is devestadet and now sllowly taken over by the dominion in political way.

Stewart Bates Yeah But AS the other guy said the redguards almost managed to fight againdt the Thalmor alone, if the Empire tried hard enough and tried to work with Hammerfell i think that they could beat the Aldmeri Dominion

I like the theory that Titus Mede arranged his own assassination, ultimately to pave the way for a stronger and better Emperor. If you also killed Amaund Motierre, it was also a convenient way for Mede to get rid of a troublemaker (albeit at the cost of his own life) in the Elder Council.

@@lidendichsibenich2446 how many dark brotherhood sanctuaries do you think there are lmao. The only thing they really should've added is a quest to get the password to the door. But essentially destroying a DB sanctuary is as easy as that. There was a guy before the penitus oculatus who found this sanctuary and even got in without the door. If you read Cicero's diaries you'll see that all the sanctuary were easily destroyed. What protects them is their hidden location and the black door. Once you got over this they're just fragile mages or dagger wielders, except arnbjorn and veezara

mark of Dibella I'm pretty sure that the Dark Brother Hood members don't think of themselves as good guys. Alduin belies he needs to end the world so it can begin again or something along those lines. He believes what he is doing is right, the Dark Brother Hood just kills people for money and because their god says so. It's not about doing the right thing to them.
@user-oo8oj1hl8k
@user-oo8oj1hl8k 6 жыл бұрын
+Acendiat Media To be fair, Alduin isn't good in any sense of the word, nor is he trying to do the right thing. Alduin is the first born of Akatosh, his purpose is to end the world so that the next one can begin. However, Alduin is flawed. Instead of ending the world he wants to rule it, and he exerts a tyrannical rule over the other dragons as well. Alduin isn't pissed at the Dragonborn for trying to stop the end of the world, but because he sees the Dragonborn as an insult to his "birthright". After all, the Dragonborn is also a child of Akatosh, meaning it's Akatosh who created the Dragonborn to battle Alduin in the first place.

ᛞᛟᛟᛗᛁᚾ He may believe that the world would be better under his rule. What I'm saying is that it is possible for alduin to believe himself to be in the right. His "birthright" right may be his justification. The dark brother hood aside from calcemo are just serial killers who are making a profit while they are at it. Even when following sithis they don't see themselves as in the right.

Maro doesn't belong on the list. He's the main antagonist. Villain and antagonist are not always the same thing (though they usually are). With the dark brotherhood, you're part of a murder cult of assassins who kill for the glory of Sithis and the Night Mother. The player character is the villain of the Dark Brotherhood questline. Misunderstood villain isn't something you can really call him because he was never villainous in the first place.

Honestly I always spared Cicero whenever I got to that point, even though I never knew the part about Lucien having something to say about it. My reasoning was that Cicero, while a crazy murder, is still friendly, honest, and loyal. Generally by the point that the mission to kill him came up, Astrid was becoming a bit hostile to the whole situation and never came across as trustworthy, while Cicero never lied during the entire time I'd known him (which included meeting him when he was stranded between Dawnstar and Whiterun and cheerfully explained that he was trying to transport a corpse) so I felt that it would be wrong to just kill him, especially since I don't like killing anyone that looks like a defenseless opponent that doesn't deserve it anyways. After the end of the Dark Brotherhood questline, though, it came to be my default response to that mission that I let him talk and then just walk out immediately: he's actually a decent companion, has (in my opinion) hilarious dialogue, and was the only person who seemed to realize that Astrid was untrustworthy, so sparing him is not only my way of rewarding him for his loyalty to the Dark Brotherhood over the woman who almost caused it to go extinct, but is also a result of me enjoying having him around.

I’ve always loved Cicero and I’ve never once killed him. He’s actually a very powerful follower. If you don’t kill him and just finish the storyline, he becomes essential and can’t die. He’s an excellent follower and is actually really funny 😄😄
@behakasweets9632

Cicero has been my favorite character since I first played the game and he's always my follower once I beat the dark brotherhood (I've replayed Skyrim a lot lol) I feel like he's so misunderstood and his journals explain some of that too. He just wants to keep the Dark Brotherhood's authority the way it was created and not have Astrid mocking their "leader" if that's what you could call the night mother. He's also really entertaining as a follower when you're listening to someone talk forever and he starts mumbling in the background or often times yells "let's kill someone!" He's also a really good follower I've never had him die on me like other followers (I'm not even sure if he can unless you kill him)
@marhawkman303
@marhawkman303 5 жыл бұрын
Well, the Night Mother is actually a supernatural entity so, despite using a corpse to communicate with her followers, the Night Mother is a real leader(albeit one who is VERY hands-off). Which is something Astrid seemingly doesn't understand.

Note: It is optional to kill him. You can literally just go right to the Emperor's ship and finish the quest. It's just there as an option to kill him. Though, I can only imagine what would happen to him if you leave him alive and it turns out he completely failed to protect the Emperor from you.

i love the DB and honsetly: if they had no questline and would just offer you contracts i'd be already happy because being a stealthy assasin is just the most fun in TES (not in online unfortunately). However, when it comes to questline-comparison the Skyrim-DB-Questline falls wayyyyy behind the Oblivion-DB-Questline (but that is hard to top to be honset). The Quest "Whodunit?" alone is better then the entire Skyrim-questline.
@SanguineKobra

Thieves isn't good. Sure the story line is decent, but the entirety isn't that fun. Especially the last quest when you become Guild Master. ALL THOSE REQUIREMENTS! I say Dawnguard/Vampire (Don't know how to spell clan name) is 1st/2nd. The labyrinth in Mages was really fun tho. Ghost Zombies
@joethesheep4675

yeah. Dawnguard-questline is pretty neat. Only thing i dont like is the ending as a vampire (i hate that u cant take down the sun yourself but its pretty obvious why u cant do it; however even if u want to play the villainoust villain ever u cant do it because in the end u can only do "the good thing". Which is kind of sad but i guess it would be hard to explain an eternal night away in TES6. However, they could have done it way better. A much better way out would have been if they would let you choose to do the ritual but let it fail for some reason (maybe a Dawnguard-hero is able to make the ultimate sacrifice and 1. destroy auriels bow or 2. heals Serana from vampirism thus making her blood useless for ritual-use. I would have loved that! Also this way the Dawnguard would feel more of a threat than just a bunch of target dolls like they usually do (even in a highly modded game to increase difficulty the never do anything other than attack (and die). It never seems as if they have a plan or something)

@ralphfischer6924
@ralphfischer6924 6 жыл бұрын
Yes they do say disturbance. And please don't say "in most places" suggesting that you would have some kind of statistic to back it up. You obviously wouldn't know. That being said - you never reported a disturbance to the police? It is the noun to "to disturb" which is pretty common in modern english. What else would you call it if you witnessed someone disturbing someone? Here is an exercise: Rewrite the expression "There is a disturbance in the void." without changing the meaning. You can't. Because it's a generic phrase. There isn't a reference everywhere you want it to be. The emperor has no clothes either.

You are in this situation an anti-hero (hero, who isn't all about justice and restoring peace) and Maro is an anti-villain (villain, who does stand on the side of the good guys but does questionable things in order to reach his goal). A protagonist is a main character of a story, in games, the player character is *always* the protagonist and the one you are trying to stop from doing some evil stuff is *always* the antagonist. Sithis is the last dude you want to annoy, don't kill Cicero, besides there's actually evidence that Astrid breaks all 5 tenets during the questline, so she's in the wrong, the guild shows no respect for what they call 'the old ways' (Likely because of Astrid being leader), 'old ways' meaning Sithis and the Nightmother, but there are two members that would prefer the old ways, and appreciate the fact that the Nightmother is back (Festus Krex and Gabriella), oh yeah, I guess I should add that killing Cicero is breaking a tenet so good luck with Sithis at that point

After all, him snapping at Astrid for sacrilege is like a Knight Templar snapping at you for mocking the Saints or the Church. You don't insult a man's religion in the same room as him and not expect retaliation. Especially if the man's a talented assassin who can probably hear you since he's good at sneaking around when you least expect it.

Yeah he was just a little bit cranky and lonely after being sent 4000 years forward in time so he tried to resurrect some of his old pals to keep him company. And then some guy just starts shouting at him!

Cicero and Maro have my vote. Cicero is creepy and all, but he's kind of fun too in a way, but since many of my characters I create are custom races, I can't really do the Dark Brotherhood, besides the fact that I don't really want to kill that master class chef of all of Tamriel just to kill a dupe of the emperor.

You should make a video about NPCs that you don’t have to kill/you can save in Skyrim! Like a lot of people don’t know that you can actually save Betrid Silver Blood from forsworn attack, or Malborn (the guy that helps you at the Thalmor Embassy) and so on, that would be very interesting!

Ulfric is really the more villainous though. He just wants the throne for himself and doesn't care about who he crosses or kills to get it. He doesn't care about what his people do to others and only cares about being high king he also wants a war with the thalmor which will just result in skyrim being genocided by high elves and probably the same happening to the empire and then you have the whole continent being ruled by elven supremacists. The Empire are just defending there land from rebels (the empire started in Skyrim with Tiber Septims campaign at the end of the 2nd era) and preparing for the coming war with the Thalmor.

From Uflric's page on Skyrim Wiki, specifically on his policies and beliefs Much of Stormcloak doctrine stems from Ulfric's views that Skyrim should secede from what he considers a corrupt crumbling Empire; one that already is defeated by the Thalmor. After witnessing the deaths of an untold number of Nords who sacrificed themselves during The Great War, Ulfric considered the White-Gold Concordat treaty between the Empire and the Aldmeri Dominion to be a complete betrayal of the Empire's citizens.[2] Ulfric also seeks to become the next High King, as he believes there has not been a "true" High King in Skyrim for generations, and that previous kings were puppets that were hand-picked by the Emperor.[2] Some Nords feel that his opposition to the White-Gold Concordat and the banning of Talos worship in Skyrim is simply a facade for him to gain more supporters to gain his true goal of becoming High King of Skyrim.[16] However, asking Ulfric how he became Jarl of Eastmarch will reveal that he is very dedicated in following the ways of traditional Nord beliefs. He says that the throne he sits on is Ysgramor's and his father's, rather than his, and that he only hopes he can do both of them proud.[2] Furthermore, Ulfric's dialogue with Galmar Stone-Fist reveals that he does not relish the lives that will be lost in his rebellion and is considerate of the Nord families who will lose loved ones in his civil war. Even so, Ulfric feels he must see his quest for Skyrim's independence to its final conclusion as he sees the Empire as an inept parasite that continues to bleed Skyrim dry to recoup their losses from the Great War that they chose to surrender in. He also sees the Empire as an obstacle which is preventing his people from ridding his homeland of Thalmor influence. In addition to his qualms about how the Empire's politics are affecting his homeland, he also resents the Empire for what he sees as unjustly criminalizing the Nord people for desiring to rule themselves and disregarding the sacrifices of all the soldiers who fought in the Great War by appeasing the oppressive demands of the Aldmeri Dominion.[17] With several of his policies being nationalistic in tone, many non-Nord and some Nords consider Ulfric to be prejudiced. He is believed by some to have sequestered the Dunmer population in Windhelm to the slums of the Gray Quarter[18] and the Argonians to the assemblage off the docks, issuing a decree forbidding the Argonians from living within the city's walls,[19] contrary to his father Hoag's[12] more "soft" policy,[20] however this hostile belief toward outsiders is shared by much of Windhelm's populace.[18] Dialogue with Niranye-an Altmer who lives within the city-actually suggests that it is the Dunmer who chose to live in the Gray Quarter due to being "too proud and naive to understand the way things truly are."[21] Similar comments are made by Belyn Hlaalu, a Dunmer who owns property in Windhelm.[22] Pleas from Dunmer citizens often fall on deaf ears, leading them to believe he has nothing but disdain for them. Some even claim Ulfric refuses to send aid to the Khajiit caravans and non-Nord towns that have been raided by bandits.[18] Dialogue shared between Ulfric and his steward Jorleif indicate, however, that he does not attend to the issues in his city because he is too preoccupied with the Stormcloak Rebellion and the greater issues of Skyrim to worry about them, saying it is the guards' jobs to deal with such issues.[23] He also allows non-Nords to live peacefully in Windhelm and own businesses, including Altmer and Imperials. He also allows a Dunmer, Belyn Hlaalu, to own a successful farm in the outskirts of the city, and employ an elderly Nord woman. Ulfric admits to having fallen from the Greybeards' strict teachings about using the Way of the Voice for anything other than the worship of Kynareth, however he still believes that his Thu'um should not be used lightly and rarely uses his training.[2] He also still refers to Arngeir as "Master Arngeir," despite not training with them for a number of years.

I, in all of my playthroughs have NEVER killed Cicero. The Dark Brotherhood was my favorite faction in Oblivion. I respected the tenants, worshiped Sithis and followed Lucien's instructions to the t. Why would I doubt him in Skyrim?
