In our latest Skyrim video we critically analyze the Argonians and see if they really are what people crack them up to be.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

Mainly it's how it's presented. History needs to be dealt in a romantic type of way, just dropping in facts won't make it likeable, but more like a chore. This video is done with music, visuals and a pleasing voice not just telling you about Argonians, but doing it in a tone (complimented greatly by the music) to make you WANT to know more.
@Selvyre
@Selvyre 6 жыл бұрын
To be fair, a lot of the importance in history is in those facts: if you don't know the sequence specific events occur, you may question things incorrectly or build yourself a foundation of false knowledge that a later teacher will have to rebuild to get you up to speed with what they're teaching (we've all seen this kind of thing in math, for example, where a teacher might have to spend more time teaching 1 specific student more because they don't have as good a grip on the fundamentals). Teaching in a romantic way can make more of it stick, but a lot of vital information could easily be overlooked, and then there's the most important thing: effort. It's very time-consuming to create romantic ways to teach something substantial. Teaching romantically may make things stick better, but it's also much more effort on the teacher who is going to have to teach not only that one particular subject, but possibly 2 or 3 other subjects in High School and Middle School, and in junior college your professors may also have to teach several different subjects, and in post-grad your professors are also conducting their own research projects, to say nothing of continuing education for teachers.

KC Halcomb yes, that is true, HOW you present those facts is even more important, because if no one listens to those facts, there's no point is telling those facts. Storytellers are historians who embellish a little to make everyone know the story. Every conspiracy theory has one thing in common, they tell a great story as to why those theories are true.

I guess Argonians became slaves because it was the will of the Hist, slaves are shipped everywhere, and because the Hist can connect to all Argonians, they are the perfect spies (for the Hist), I guess it's kinda like how Nocturna works with thieves (gives them luck when necessary, but not always). And may I applaude the ability for Argonians to adapt? They are pretty much everywhere, even Skyrim's cold climate doesn't seem to affect them that much, their knack for lockpicking and stealth (second ONLY to Khajits), connection to the Hist, waterbreathing, resiliance to toxins and illnesses. The perfect spies. (As good as the Hist exists, Argonians will easily outlive all the races).

I agree with this. It makes sense to me that the hist subjegate the argonians to other races atrocities to 1) improve the hists knowledge of the other provinces and 2) grow a racial resentment of other races for the argonians, which further makes them rely on the hist The second fact i think is backed by the genocidal views of the leading argonian party

Argonians haven't been the best warriors as a race, but maybe that's because they're less warmongering than other races. It seems to me that Argonians as a culture aren't obsessed with conquering other races or racial supremacy. They only seemed to get riled up in self defense or justified revenge. They're not obsessed with war and dominance. Sort of like a kid who could be a better fighter but doesn't see the point of constantly being an asshole.
@vynonyoutube1418

Argonians are actually pretty good warriors, at least considering what they did during the Oblivion Crisis. The Daedra invading Black Marsh got their asses kicked, and they didn't stop there, they even invaded Oblivion successfully before Dagon's lieutenants closed the gates so they wouldn't be overrun.

It would be interesting if more Argonians took to the sea, either as merchants or pirates, being able to breathe water (seems salinity ain't a problem with them) may be a huge advantage for them, and maybe it could be possible for them to actually build underwater cities (the water breathing is indefinite, so why not), ambushing boats from the depths, putting all Tamriel in an economic crisis). Is not that they're bad, they just don't know how to play their cards.
@patricklukcy13

I believe there are underwater sentient races in elder scrolls. If argonians did go out to sea and went far enough they'd eventually run into issues with the sloads. But I would wager if the argonians were smart they could make powerful aliences with the sloads.
@Hektols
@Hektols 4 жыл бұрын
It is very likely that the hist 'adviced' the argonians to not become a race of sailors with underwater cities because it would have ended with the majority of the race abandoning the marsh and the hist.

From what you told me, they have one of the most powerful abilities in the world. They can adapt. All of the other races might "stomp them". Yet they will survive long after their overlords. They don't need to win the battle. They just need to survive the war. Because while the world literally burns, these lizards will be able to adapt better than all of the other races. I think the Hist helped with the Oblivion crisis because to get that super juice, it would have taken a lot of energy to make. Why waste such a precious resource? Especially when the lizards can survive the constant oppression and subjugation of multiple races? To me, what is more impressive then the military victories is the aftermath. The truth is that the empire is practically reliant on their conquest. Without it they become stale and break apart. Argonians suffered but endured. That endurance is one of their most defining qualities and it is why I can't help but admire them. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if they were just literally waiting the other races out. Like a bad storm. Just stay indoors until the storm clears and go outside. Heck, the other races already underestimate them. I wonder if that is exactly what the Argonians were waiting for. But how would I know? (:D

it's not that the argonians are always treaded on it's that the Hist are playing the LONG game. They took the best defensible place in the continent and uplifted the most flexible and adaptable species there. Notice how deep black marsh is never conquered? that's what the hist care for. Eventually, their time will come and it will make the oblivion crisis look like a nice vacation.

Argonians are also potentially the smallest race (population wise) and the least advanced, let alone skilled. Argonians, despite being my absolute favorite race, are very much third world compared to the rest of Tamriel. Even the Bosmer have more advancements and skill than the Argonians. They aren't nearly as magically inclined as Bretons, Altmer, or even Dunmer and Imperials. They don't have a culture that's centered around combat and endurance like the Redgaurds, Bosmer, Orsimer, and Nords. And they aren't nearly as agile or stealthy as Khajiits. Argonians are very much adapted to their homeland and that's all the Hist felt was necessary for the Argonians as a whole. So long as the Argonians are capable of surviving and thriving within Black Marsh, the Hist is safe. This is part of the reason I want a Black Marsh-centric TES game. I want Bethesda to potentially explore a way for the Argonians to become an entity that exist separate from the Hist. I think it would be cool, if a civil war of sorts erupted and allowed for the player to choose whether the Argonians should remain connected to the Hist or to magically separate the Argonians as a whole from the Hist. It could even involve a Deadric Prince becoming interested in the entire affair as a potential opportunity to gain a hold on the Argonian race. Like what if Molag Bol or even Malacath were become interested. I mean, as the Deadric Prince of Vengeance, he could easily become the patron to a race who have been beaten down all their history.

Or maybe Peryite could do it. Would be interesting and ironic since he has hold over diseases and Argonians are highly resistant to diseases. While Black Marsh is probably packing a lot of toxic stuff/diseases that is dangerous to non-Argonians. And since he is considered to be the(sadly) weakest of the Daedra Princes and is often seen as a dragon, I see he might do that for a reason like that.

The Argonians are not really weak. They just have no need to be strong until the Hist deems it so, which is when they become arguably one of the strongest races in the entire Elder Scrolls universe. The Hist has been known to create the Argonians as sort of their "ambassadors" or envoys in the real world, because they can move and interact with others in ways the Hist can't (yes I AM aware that there are tales of moving Hist but those are just rumours, so I'll disregard them for now) Argonians serve as their means to stay alive, as both the Elthrosomething war (can't remember that name) and the Dwemer did a good job in decimating their numbers. They are both their children and servants, and so can also be used as really good soldiers. Considering the Argonians can be produced in masses like a factory and may be reborn this way (which means that you have practically unlimited soldiers) and guerrilla tactics that proved formidable enough to best Daedra in combat to the point of nearly invading the invaders, added to the Hist trees acting like watchtowers in the Black Marsh, and adding THAT yo the fact they are inmune to nearly all diseases in their home, which makes their homeland pretty much un-invadable, and adding to THAT the fact there are giant variations... I say that Argonians in general are weak compared to the other races in their current state, the current Black Marsh in an open field would not stand a chance against the Altmer or the Nords. HOWEVER, should the Hist deem it necessary, they could just make the Argonian race a military superpower in a matter of, possibly, just days. They are formidable enough attacking others, and their homeland is not really defeatable without the Hist even trying.

There is one point I am surprised you didn't make during all of this, aside from the argonian's being more of a symbiotic in nature with the hist, that they are the only race to survive conquests, look at the races such as snow elves, sea elves and others that once conquered for the most part vanished from the face of Tamriel. Also another thing to remember is the Argonian's do consume what is essentially the blood of the hist, to be symbiotic there must be a balance, otherwise it becomes a parasitic bond, meaning the enslaved argonian's may not be just pawns but actually purged by the collective whole to prevent that symbiotic state from becoming corrupt.

Remember when he said that the hists collect the dead argonians memories? I think the hist trees allow the argonians to be slaves so they can have argonians in other provinces to learn more about what is going on around tamriel. Almost like spying on the other races, what they know, and what they plan to do. Maybe an Argonian in Morrowind discovered some secret that Dagon was coming to Nirn, but the Argonian was killed shortly after. Then, the hist tree would know, thus calling the argonians together to protect them. Good theory, huh?

As a species they have definitely been screwed over, but from an Argonian point of view they don't feel that their weak. From the perspective of men or elf i can see how they think there weak, slaves from the beginning of history, have not conquered anyone and barely defended their land, However, maybe the Argonians are just swamp folk who want to be left alone? Perhaps the epiphany of their existence is hanging out with the hist trees, we simply do not know enough about their culture. When prompted they have attempted to defend their lands, charged head on into oblivion gates, put a halt on the daedra invasion of their lands and took it to the enemy Dagon , that has to be respected. Their perfectly suited to their habitat, and when properly organised they are very effective. Regardless of lore, they make a great character to play as, assassin, theif, ghost, berserker warlord, battle Mage. Keep up the great vids fudgemuppet. 👍

I like the Orcs and dark elves the most but the Argonians arent weak. They saved the Nords and Dark elves with 3 gods on their side from Ice Giants from Akavar. They never lost a war because they never even acknowledge they're attacked. Sure, other races took some undefended camps outside the swamps near morrowind as slaves but they never got conquered. Any band of slave catchers can catch round up a village that doesn't defend itself. Catching slaves isnt an exercise of superiority. its hard to call yourself the winner of a game the other guy isnt even playing. They only 2 wars they fought, they won handly. Dark elves and daedra are the only times the Argonians stopped chilling in a swamp and organized and marched for war. They beat the Dark elves pretty easily even though it was mostly a surprise attack of sorts but they never got repelled. They stopped advancing. big difference. The difference between a war with a victor and a complete genocide. They kept the lands they took gave the Dunmer more causalties than the oblivion cirsis itself (that could be untrue though, another unreliable narrator effect). They didnt have a government until the oblivion cirsis really and since then, theyve done better than every race except the 3 race faction of the Aldermeri Dominion. People who look down on the argonians judge them on very odd criteria. Like did they conquer other nations, did they own slaves? The ability was always there, they are the jack of trade race, with fighters, mages, and stealth all rolled into their character makeup in-game. But their culture never desired anything but to be left alone in black marsh. So thats what they do. The Argonians' goals are a mystery now, with their new government ignoring the thalmor's request to meet but theyre the biggest problem the thalmor have right now aside from the redguards who are in open rebellion. Because this era is the first time theyve even looked up to see what the other races are doing after eras of ignoring them. Now they have more territory than ever and for the first time, a military.

It seems like the Argonians aren't a powerhouse but they are very resilient and united (something that can't be said about most of the other races). They is a good chance they will outlive all the races of man and mer and khajiit who are (excluding the Khajiit because I am unsure about them on this topic) constantly fighting or dealing with civil unrest, or having grand ambitions which eventually lead to destruction. Concerning your theory at the end, I like it. The hist seem to act like a secret organization, The Argonians aren't seen as a threat. It could all be some long con conspiracy for them to take over Mundus.

Being very isolationist and Tribal in nature it would make sense for Argonions to not have Much a history outside of blackmarsh. The Argonians are the Enigma race, Anything you know of them can only come from any of them that happen to leave Blackmarsh. If the Argonians were more active they would be much tougher and have a bigger footprint in tamriel. Major disease and poison resistance, the ability to breath underwater. Possible ability to gain bird like quality's and perhaps ability to adapt to their environments over generations(for example Skyrim Argonians gain feathers and horns, Tamriel argonians having fins since they are closer to blackmarsh,) Basically are the Argonians weak. no not really. they just don't have the will to be conquerors like every other race They just keep to themselves deep within black marsh. They are very powerful When they want to be. They stay with their Gods. any argonians on the fringes of blackmarsh are few and far between and not as unified

@@rekzzak it happens in all stories. I started writing fanfiction as writing practice a few years ago and basically became the fudgemuppet of the Naruto universe (Great universe, shite main plot) and I've corrected so many mistakes on the series at this point that sonetimes I just stop mid paragraph and click off the comment to save the headache. One of the best examples is the simple fact that people often cite the words of a particular character, who I shall not spoil in case you wanna ever watch that series, as lore and truth. Buuuuuut for the entire series his entire shtick is that of a deceiver, he's literally planning everything in an attempt to be veiled in darkness, actively striving to place himself as the one kept on the wrong side of history. And pretty much everything he says or does is to that end, so he's highly unreliable as a source. Especially when he's expositioning at one character in particular who he's most concerned about deceiving for personal reasons, but his words are still commonly cited and it drives me mental. Subjective opinions are everywhere in story and lore and its maddening when people fail to realize that we're just spectating characters, not being told objective truths as an all knowing god.

There's 2 ways to look at this. Are the Argonians a weak race? Individually, yes. Especially since they rely on the hist. As a group: not the weakest. Their grouping up is their strength. In fact, the weakest *race* might be the Orcs, on the group level. The problem with the Orcs is that they are not very tribal. They don't actually have a tribe of their own. They are spread out throughout Tamriel in every province. This is why they keep being defeated by races that may be weaker on an individual level, but nevertheless know how to team up. Argonians worked very well together against the deadra.

@Top-Lip
@Top-Lip 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say they are weak, there is a reason why Argonian shadowscales make some of the best assassins, and they are essentially stronger men with resistances to poison and disease, they are amphibious giving them huge advantages. they rather have a tribal style of culture and are more passive and submissive towards the world than other races of tamriel. many of them are enslaved by dark elves and yet many remain relatively peaceful. They face a lot of political and social adversity because they are a beast race, and their submissive lifestyle makes them more vulnerable. Their lack of interest in conquest has made them vulnerable to conquest though as a species, argonians are most certainly not weak. They are just more primitive. With the knowledge and technology of the elves they could potentially be one of the most dangerous races in Tamriel.

I believe that the hist will play a role in the upcoming games, looking through what we know about these trees is that the hist is able to create life from its sap. These trees are found all around Nirn and Argonian tribes usually form around these trees. I don't think that these trees are just sentient trees that the argonians use for their sap and cultural purposes...i think there is much more to that, we know that most of these trees are centered in Black Marsh, a place that is lethal to other races when nearing the center. I think that the argonians are the creations of the Hist, a entity powerful enough to create and shape life, a deity. The Hist takes the memories from the argonians upon death, and giving that soul a new body, the argonians are the pawns of the Hist, using them as spies and assets. Gavering knowledge about other races, the hist is eternal, so it might be that for it, hours are minutes, days are hours time flies quicker for it, it knows all, it's seen every war, expierenced it with every death of a argonian, it is able to give strength and courage to the argonians. For now it does what it needs to survive, studying, evolving, growing new trees in new locations maybe since the dwemer cut most down for wood, replenishing it's strength, and maybe planing domination. Or it is just a tree...a sentient tree protecting it self, like we see some trees do in real life, by releasing toxins from its roots so no plant grows near it, stealing it's water and nutrition from the soil below it.

Argonians are based off of cold-blooded reptiles of the real world. Of which their musculature is easily able to support their body weight and then some in all manners of inclines. This muscle strength alone would ruin even a Nord in a strength contest, though that would just be overpowered to put in the game. There is also the the Shadowscales... those motherfuckers are no joke. They can turn out to be hulking were-crocodile juggernauts of death, or sleek wraiths that can put the lightest of Khajiit to shame. Why and how, you ask? Their feet are similarly padded, giving them the same advantages, they also have claws; though they have something the Khajiit don't have. Cold blood... The ability to circulate blood to needed parts of the body and the genetic ability to recruit every muscle fibre at once, an act that would allow full usage of every ounce of strength resulting in almost comical strength at the cost of severe muscle damage (Histskin tho mothafucka, who cares at that point!) Vampires also can't detect them cos you know, cold blood. Can't see that juice if it ain't warm. (Keep in mind that to be this cold would probably mean close to death since reptiles need to bask in order to heat the blood, but it depends on how skilled the individual is in manipulating their body heat. Just like an Assassin manipulating their HR with sedatives.) The major problems with the race that I can see, is the lack of magical prowess. The physical is there, though unlike Nord's, who have the meat AND the occasional magical art prodigy; the Argonians had nothing besides the odd shaman. Which was a pissant in the face of an actual mage. Mind control, enchanting, runes, traps etc. Is just too great of a threat for mere physical and adaptive capabilities to handle. Sure, the Shadowscale were versed in some magics, though shadowscale were an elite small number. Nowhere near enough to repel an invasion, in which every soldier could use magic with relative ease (Elves).

Axton The Storyteller Argonians are well versed in magic actually. The magic they use is not the 'on demand' style of fireballs and atronachs. They use slow, earthly magic. They are very well versed in restoration magic and use their shamans to enact ceremonies to draw magicka from the Hist. They are not experts like the Bretons or the High Elves but are about as good as the Imperials or the Dunmer.

And the other guy, it's not written anywhere that Argonians aren't physically capable. I was just basing it off of real life reptiles and cold blooded creatures. The genomes of some species of reptilians have been known to possess 100% motor recruitment. While we humans only use a portion of our muscle fibres. I was using science not lore. I didn't say anything about cold weather or hot weather, where did that come from? So all benefits of cold blood are completely devoid because they 'could' die without basking? Your arguments sure are tactless you know. Also whats with the msg spam? Chill homie, no need to get worked up.
