I was at Goodwood Revival about ten years ago. On another table in the tent, a family were celebrating with their elderly father his birthday. The son had come across Sir Stirling in the paddock and asked if he would come over and say hello. The look on the fathers face was just incredible when Sir Stirling not only appeared and wished him happy birthday but sat down at the table and talked with him for about half an hour. Not just an outstanding racing driver but a wonderfully generous human being.

I met Stirling Moss at a car show at the NEC when I was about 8 back in the mid 70’s. He signed an autograph and then my Dad asked me to take a picture of him with Stirling. I stood a few meters back trying to frame the photo and people kept walking in front of me oblivious to what I was trying to do. I remember him barking at the crowd “Can’t you see the boy is trying to take a photo”! People immediately stopped and I got the photo. A real gentleman and a legendary driver. So very sad to hear the news.

@@irishjg1 My pleasure. Yes indeed, they were very different very special people. Tony Brooks is still alive, Stirling once said he rated Tony in the top 6 drivers ever. Brooks believed, like Stirling, that great danger was an essential part of GP racing, that without it the true test, and the real magic, disappears. I don't think I agree (it's a very difficult one I reckon), but it's a strong and fascinating point.

So sad to have to say GOODBYE go a special gentleman who was such a real ambassador for Motorsport. I had the privilege of meeting Sir Stirling in person ONCE only at a book signing of his newly published book "STIRLING MOSS --All my Races" That was at N.E.C. BIRMINGHAM at Autosport International The Racing Car Show ten years ago ( Jan. 2010) I was also privileged to see him race LIVE ONCE ONLY but that was a long time ago way back in Sept.1955 in the R.A.C. Tourist Throphy Race at the DUNDROD N/ IRELAND( road circuit) when I was just a young 15- y/old . when he won the race driving a Mercedes Benz 300 S.L.R. Car no 10 it was on his 26 th birthday 17 th Sept.1955 I now feel Imust share this little story with all you Motorsport fans out there At the book launch/ signing at the N.E.C. there was quite a queue of people behind me but Sir Stirling ( the true gentleman that he was ) gave me time for a little chat and I took the opportunity of mentioning the only race I saw him race "live" in at the Dundrod Circuit in 1955 and asked him what he thought of that circuit to which he replied to me with a "personal" answer ,"DO YOU KNOW. LIAM THAT WAS A REAL MAN'S CIRCUIT" needless to say that made my day as we shook hands after the book signing NOW I want to thank you all at Sky F,1 for putting this special tribute to Sir Stirling and leave you with a few facts and statistics about him. Between March 1947 and April 1962 (when his racing career was prematurely ended at Goodwood on Easter Monday when he crashed whilst driving a Lotus 18/21) he competed in 585 Motorsport Events / finished in 387 of them and won 216 He started 66 World Championship Grands Prix. Won 16 of them and also started from POLE in 16 of them.. He was never to become WORLD CHAMPION Though he was VERY WORTHY TO BE ONE but he was RUNNER UP 4 times and FINISHED THIRD IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP 3 Times /some achievement. This book " STIRLING MOSS----ALL MY RACES" is a must read for any MOTORSPORT ENTHUSIAST It gives a report by Sir Stirling on EVERY ONE of his 585 races I was just reading it when I noticed your podcast on my mob./ Phone this evening. REST IN PEACE SIR STIRLING! Liam Tomlinson.

There was one coupe version of the famous engineer from Mercedes Rudi Uhlenhaut and he used to drive this in a mansion area of Stuttgart up the hills with a roar and he reached nearly 80 miles in second gear up the hill.

He's the oldest F1 race winner still around at 88, and indeed the last from the '50s. You have to go some way to Stewart as the next oldest, then Mario Andretti (both 80 at present though Jackie's nine months older), Carlos Reutemann, Jean-Pierre Jabouille, Jacques Laffite and Jacky Ickx as the ones over 75. However, the oldest F1 driver full-stop still living is a Mr Ken McAlpine, who entered seven races for Connaught in the early 1950s without great success - he is presently six months shy of making it to his 100th birthday!

Moss was second to Fangio in the 1955-7 championships, when Fangio was dominant. Stirling real chance was in 1958-9. The 1958 Championship was the great duel between Moss and Hawthorn the classic contest between two very different but similar class in both senses drivers like Hunt and Lauda. In some ways the Hawthorn v Moss duel in 1958 was far more equal than now seen. In many ways the Dino 246 of Hawthorn was the better car except at the Dutch GP at Zandroot which was more like a modern circuit and Vanwalls, BRM or a Lotus worked a Ferrari was useless their. Hawthorn really had the Monaco and Italian races won in 58, when engine and clutch problems retired and slowed the car. Ferrari functioned as a team, Collins drove to support Mike. Brooks was in many ways an equal number one and sometimes Brooks had the better car and won 3 GP in 58, Moss 4GP. The Milla Miglia like the Targa were part of then 1955 were part of the world sports car championship which was probably more important than F1 that year, as Mercedes had no competition in F1 were in the Sports cars Jaguar was a equal rival for Mercedes and Aston Martin and Ferrari were also competitive. The Milla Miglia and Targa were road races and really outdated , even in 1955. In those Italian road races, Fangio just cruised (Fangio was 2nd in the 55 Milla Miglia) and said you 'can not really drive fast on those Italian roads, if you have any moral conscience .' Compared with the Dunrod Tourist Trophy and Le Mans which were the great 3 way Hawthorn, Fangio , Moss duels. Moss win at Dunrod was actually a vastly great victory. But because Moss defected from Jaguar to drive for Mercedes in 1955, ten years after WW2 , and French occupation when even German rearmament was controversial, in many ways the drives of Hawthorn in the type Jag made him far more a hero for the British establishment and public school boys.

To assess Moss you really have to look at his races in the Portuguese GPs in 1958-60. The races at Lisbon and Oporto were on the most extraordinary and dangerous road circuits ever used. The Monaco GP, Moss wins in 1956, 1960 and 1961 and in his own British GP which he won in 1955 and 1957 but was sensationally out driven by Peter Collins in the 1958 British GP when Collins driving at 12/10 in the race of his life, simply destroyed Moss Vanwall. Significantly Moss was not prepared to go beyond the safe limit, and really go after Collins, Stirling's Vanwall was destroyed in 45 laps at 10/10 round Silverstone. Stirling always said he went to the limit on slow and medium circuits on the fast lethal circuits like Spa, Rheims, Rouen and Berne Stirling only drove at 8/10 and never attempted to drive at the speed of Fangio or Hawthorn on those tracks. In the 1958 you probably have to focus on the last 3 races, Oporto, Monza and Morocco. Hawthorn led at Oporto for the first half of the race, went in to the pits, and when he came back into the race, drove the fastest laps of the race, closing at tens seconds a lap, and going 2 seconds under the pole winning time..At this stage, the drum brakes on the Dino 246, went and Hawthorn was just cruising in second place. Moss variously claims he misread the critical pit signal as (Haw reg) not ( Haw rec) or that he could not believe that Hawthorn had lapped that fast in the likely condition of the Dino 2/3rd race. And that that extra point for the fastest lap, also is a critical point for the championship. The rules the races were run over in 1958 were quite extraordinary in many ways. Only the drivers best 6 races out of 10GP, technically the Indy race was the 11th GP which also counted. But basically Hawthorn had scored points in 8/10 races - therefore his 3rd in Argentina and 5th in Holland were discounted.

Inaccurate. I'm not sure where you got your information or if you perhaps misinterpreted it, but Moss never said that he only drove 8/10 anywhere on any track. In fact his mastery on technical tracks belied his enjoyment of the faster ones. He specifically told me - in person, not second or third hand - that one of his great enjoyments was keeping his foot flat to the floor on really fast corners where he knew that no one, or almost no one else would. He did once tell Jenks before the Mille that he didn't think he'd be able to do so purely under his direction, but actually when it came to it, he did after all. Hawthorn, Fangio and Collins all drove for Ferrari, yet il Commendatore didn't rate any of them as highly as he did Moss. Ferrari referred to him as the greatest driver who ever lived, alongside Nuvolari, who had been his idol from young age. And that was an opinion he held until his dying day. He considered him to be so good in fact that Ferrari was willing to paint his cars in Rob Walker blue and British racing green (as well as pay him three times his salary, which was already the highest in the world at the time) just to have Moss finally drive for him. Sadly it was never to be. What wonders those two might have accomplished together...
