If he wins the Euros, he could ride off into the sunset as a true England legend, but I'm sure the competitive nature in him would want one more crack at the world cup, and go down as a world legend. If he doesn't win the Euros though, I think it would be best for everyone to start fresh.

He *is* lucky though. It took an abysmal performance against Slovakia for him to even change tactics/move Foden off the left. But for an individual piece of brilliance, we were out. Imagine if we win now - we have the players to do it, but his stubborness almost cost us. He's done a great job fostering a good environment in the England camp, and is liked, but he's tactically inept. There's a reason we always regress in the second half. The opposition manager changes tactics and Southgate is unable to respond. We're not going to continue to get easy runs in tournaments, and I'd like to see someone get more out of this team. If we'd played like the first half of the netherlands game the entire tournament, it would be different. But we haven't, and Southgate was incredibly slow to do anything about it.

Yeah, I am 41. I am old enough to remember the mediocre performances in 1990, 96, 98, 06. Abysmal in 88, 2000,2010,12,14,16, Didn't even qualify in 94,08. There is a generation of England fans who know what it feels like to knock Germany out of a tournament, don't know what not qualifying feels like, doesn't know what getting knocked out in the groups or last 16 feels like. Those fans who threw cups and bottles at Southgate are a disgrace and the media have to take some responsibility for it. especially Gary Neville, England were awful when he was assistant manager in 14,16 yet he criticises SG?

Maybe if you remember the likes of Zidane, Luis Figo, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Maldini, Kaka, etc are no more in modern football competition, you will realise why England have never had it eaisier than now. No teams has the current squad England has hence they need to be doing well in this competition. The last good teams in Europe are France, Croatia in Europe 2020. Have you looked the road to Finals for a England in the last 2 Euros ? No team with that good players have had it better....

God I hope not he is a terrible manager. He is a good coach, not a manager. Players love him, he gets them motivated, great BUT in game management is terrible, doesn't know how to pick a team, it's a bunch of talented individuals following a terrible plan, then towards the end throwing caution to the wind and doing what they know what to do to win. Give praise for the subs? I was shouting for Watkins in the first half and once Foden ghosted for Palmer too. How he cannot see the glaring hole on the left side and still refuse to play Gordon is beyond me. Talk about experience? He was player of the tournament for Euros u21s last year. He knows how to win. He is just playing his favourites, even if it is out of position. Imagine what a PL proven manager could do with this squad of players and then tell me he's the right manager.
@nickwoodward819
@nickwoodward819 22 күн бұрын
Yup, I said at the start Foden on the left was a mistake. How it took 90 seconds till a tournament exit for him to realise the problem was beyond me. Not sure how he fits Gordon in now, but agree that in his prior formation it was mental not to have Bellingham as an 8, Foden 10 and Gordon on the left. Watkins has been obvious too, at the very least since his first appearance.

@@anoldewoman England fans always think the latest squad is "one of the best England have ever had", especially younger ones. But England tend to lack skills in key positions, meaning it doesn't matter how many good strikers you have; the team just doesn't tick. Southgate was absolutely right about England not producing enough players like Kalvin Phillips; 2021 Phillips was one of the best DMFs England has had in a long time, and it's a shame his City move derailed his international career by leading to a precipitous loss of form. Mainoo looks like he might be good enough for that role, though.

Back to back finals along with a semi final and a quarter final where we were playing better than an on form France team. We’d be fools to look for greener grass after the way we’ve built and grown into this current tournament. Why risk it? If we had gone out to Slovakia in ro16, yes. Now that we are in the first ever final on foreign soil, absolutely no. Players seem to love him. We played unbelievably well against the Netherlands and with system/set up that got the best out of our star players. I hope we win it, and then he has to stay on. Remember it’s not just him, it’s his entire set up and team that we buy into, or out of, if he leaves. We had a so called ‘golden’ generation that did ABSOLUTELY nothing, so the claim that ‘anyone’ could, or should, be winning tournaments with this team is just not correct and us as Englishman (and women) should all be a bit more humble in accepting this, I think. Just an opinion. COME ON ENGLAND!!!!

But he's earned another world cup if he wants one. 3/4 SF and 2/4 Finals is an immense record, and the idiots calling it 'lucky' (normally the same people calling for the European Golden Boot winner to be dropped as he only scored two goals and a penalty so far) don't understand how football works. Is Southgate's football pretty? No. Is it frustrating? Yes. Is it effective? Clearly.

Many here psychologically giving Spain the trophy. Imagine if it was the other way around, with Kane, Bellingham, Foden, Saka etc in the Spanish team then we'd be bricking it. He was great a few years ago, bringing the team together playing his negative football as an underdog, gave us a bit of pride back as a nation but this style of football is not what the nation wants to watch. This is a league 2 manager with league 2 tactics at the international stage, his only accomplishments to date are getting relegated. Of course its a difficult situation for the manager as he wants to play defensive football when he has a squad full of attackers because he plays not to lose 99% of the time instead of playing to win and that is what is pissing off the majority of the nation. Personally I'd be behind the team if we tried to play football and lose but the games are currently background noise because who watches that trash
