I think these 540 powered turbos (also the fixed gear) are the best 182s that Cessna ever made. 250lb more useful load than new ones and sea level power up high. I want a fixed gear so badly

Mark, thank you for having this channel. Yes, I am a subscriber! Well, I have to say, I love the airplane talk and all the details, I have to mention that the production aspect of the videos continues to evolve and get better. You guys are entertaining and informative. The b- shots and funny stuff, the flight video being separate from the plane talk (great way to get more vids on YT), the great photography from your videographer (btw he should get some air time 😝). One last thing I’ll say, I believe the symphonic introduction music should remain a “trademark” in your videos. I missed it in this particular video! Gotta love those horn riffs! Thank you and your team for continuing to make great content. Keep the horns!

As an educational demonstration of the plane it can stay on KZfaq until we all have electromagnetic hover buggies in 100 years.

Hi Mark. One other important difference to note between the bladdered and wet winged R182 is the quite significant increase in the Vno. If memory serves, it goes from 143KIAS to 160KIAS with the wet wing. It was always a lot easier to keep the later RG’s in the green during the cruise and on descent in the later aircraft.
@skywagonuniversity5023
@skywagonuniversity5023 10 ай бұрын
Thank you. Is that a coincidence because it happened in 79 and so did the wet wing or is it because of the wet wing?
@yanknbank007
@yanknbank007 10 ай бұрын
I’m only guessing, but I’m assuming because there’s more fuel/weight with the wet wings and it sits a little further out from the aircraft’s centre line (with the slightly bigger wet wing tanks) it’ll reduce the bending moment at the wing attach point, allowing for the higher Vno.
@skywagonuniversity5023
@skywagonuniversity5023 10 ай бұрын
Maybe, but the tanks are not really bigger, there is just no rubber bag in the cavity so it holds more fuel in the same place.

That's a beautiful airplane! Wow! Great video! One question I have - I've long heard about fixed-gear 182's in general, have a delicate nose wheel b/c the engine is so heavy and the nose gear is basically attached to the firewall, so if there is a hard landing the firewall would buckle. Is that still a design issue with the RG's? Of course I know one should always be careful not to hit the nose wheel hard in any plane, but I would imagine newbie pilots to a 182 might just not expect the nose being so heavy...
@skywagonuniversity5023
@skywagonuniversity5023 10 ай бұрын
182 Nose wheels are not very fragile. Any nose wheel will bend if porpoised into the ground. 182's have a bad rap because generally their pilots are upgrading out of a 172 and are not used to the difference.
@ph5915

@@skywagonuniversity5023 Thanks, Mark, that makes sense. Yep, that big ole 6 cylinder is a might heavier up front! Years ago I was semi-interested in older 182s as a step-up from my 172 but the costs involved and my missions didn't really make sense. I still have a hankering for a little taildragger but that may not be in the cards either. The 172s and PA-28s fit the blll for most casual fliers.

I live on a grass field and I am hesitant to bring the little wheels onto the dirt, though I remember it being done before when I was a kid. Ha. The pilots on the field liked this analogy. Question: have you ever encountered an exhaust backdraft in the rear seats of a 182RG? I had a carbon alarm go off in the back seat, not in the front. I suspected it had to do with the wheel wells. Maybe this is common or maybe I have to seal something up. Thanks@@skywagonuniversity5023
@skywagonuniversity5023
@skywagonuniversity5023 10 ай бұрын
@@jamesg5056 I think that you do not have positive cabin pressure. If there is more air leaking into the cabin that out, the exhaust cannot get in. Planes have vents that put a tiny bit of pressure on the cabin so that exhaust cannot get in during flight.

Mark, excellent as usual. Two questions: 1). Is there an STC to crank up the RPM for takeoff and climb ? 2). I flight plan at 150KTAS in my 180, what speed difference is there with the T182RG at cruise, say at @11.5 K ? Thanks, Jim
@skywagonuniversity5023
@skywagonuniversity5023 10 ай бұрын
There isn't an STC to turn up the RPM. There is an STC to replace the engine with a new IO-540 Lycoming, alled the Alamo STC from Atlantic Aero. It is 260 HP, fuel injected, and turns at 2600 RPM up from 2400. It is a Comanche 260 engine. It's faster and uses less fuel. It is a NEW engine and therefore VERY expensive. Speed. These will do 155 to 160 Kts at 11.5.

Hi, Mark. I’m a bit late to the game here. I am fascinated by your video and the 182 RG. I am a bit older now and last flew regularly until 1987. I just received my lost pilot license and instrument rating so now I have to become proficient again. Based upon your 2 videos, I am convinced that the RG is in my future. I have looked at Super Cub types and various Cessna fixed gears (to avoid the repair costs associated with retractable gear). But, due to the simplicity of the retractable gear and the overall simplicity of the 182, I believe I have found my plane. Couple of questions, out of all the models, ‘79 - 86, is there a model year you prefer? If so, why? Lastly, do you know if you can install air conditioning in an RG? It gets very hot in TX and having A/C is a real plus. Thank you if you have time to reply. Also, I am certain my wife and I will love your little cottage you have. Would love to meet your cow, calf, cat and chickens. Thank you very much again.

If a fixed gear and an RG flew together at the same power settings at 5000 feet and the RG had it's gear down and they were doing the same speed and the RG put it's gear up, after about 5 minutes with no other changes the RG is doing 12 to 15 Kts more. I actually did exactly that years ago in a 78 182 fixed and a 78 182 RG side by side while going on a rafting trip.
