Unfortunately that is America, especially California.

I live in California and it is definitely not illegal to be homeless nor is it a crime. What is illegal is setting up camp wherever you choose. Slab city is probably the only place in America where you are able to do that and live free off the land. Where I live in California we have many homeless people who set up camp in certain areas and the most that is done is they are ran off by the police, but would never be arrested. We even have the police drop them off by the bus load to other cities just to try to rid the city of them. It's sad but nothing much is done to help them but just to move them around from place to place.

@@prophetmargin7497 slab city was used by the military and later abandoned by them in the 50s or 60s. It is just a huge piece of land right in the middle of the desert. People just started to flock there and set up their camps. Because it's in the middle of the desert, with nothing much around, I think it's just become an out of sight, out of mind kind of thing. The people who live there are just minding their own business, while trying to survive, and in the summer heat the temperature becomes almost unbearable. So I think because of the heat, it being in the middle of nowhere and the land pretty much having no other purpose to be used, the government just leaves them alone out there. There has been alot of chatter over the years about the land being sold and the slab city residents having to leave, but as of yet nothing has ever happened. So as of now slab city resides and people will get to continue to live for free and as they wish.

Sorry, but these people survive only because of mainstream society supplying them with their basic needs, clean water, food, the guys solar setup, all made by people going to work. Zack had a seizure in the hot springs unfortunately they couldn't get him out in time. R.i.p. his girl and new daughter carry on the legacy. His father runs the ponderosa camp.

Rob still lives in slabs but doesn't run the Cafe anymore. Zack passed away. I picked up his ashes from the funeral home. His dog also passed a week after him. I picked her ashes up too.

Anyone can find themselves homeless at any time, and that law making it illegal to be homeless is absolutely disgusting.
