Follow up to my comment from 3 years ago....once again couple months ago tried it but kept mouthpiece at my desk with soft legere on it (1.5) and tried it multiple times a day. After about a week suddenly I started getting suction! I kept at it couple of weeks until suction and slap was very strong. Then did same daily attempts at popping air while releasing suction (super hard at first!). Eventually that started working too. Here I am couple months out and now figuring out how to work it into my solos. Thanks Derek! This was pain in the butt to nail down but persistence paid off.

I don’t believe it.... I am literally in my car on my way back from seeing a disney on ice performance and I had heard the term “slap tongue” and was curious. I happen to have a bari reed on me and gave it a try. I got the suction on the second try and got it with my mouth closed on the next try!!!! This was actually so helpful. Thank you so much

I've found its really easy for me to use the suction with the reed but can not push air through with the actual slapping action. I've known how to do it for a long time and still can not push air with it.

Thanks for sharing this Derek. Starting to work on this. If anyone else has gotten to the point where they can get with just the reed, Derek puts it on the mouthpiece at 4:51 I think that's where I'm going to be coming back to in the video for a while.

Hello Darek. I must say, I've never seen anyone play saxophone as you do. It's amazing what sounds you can produce on the thing! I am either talented or lucky. I saw this video, thought "Hey, let's see if I can do that." And I could. It's the first thing I have been able to get on a first time. I'm not really sure if I do it correctly (I haven't tried since don't want to wake up the entire house), but I feel like I do as you describe, and there is sure some kind of suction on the reed. I will look up for more tutorials on new things with sax. Thanks for a great tutorial!

Omg! This is sooooo cool! It didn’t take much time at all to create suction! Tip, make a suction with the entire mouthpiece, not just the reed, the jaw has a lot to do with it too!

Just want to say I love your tutorial videos and playing! It really is awesome that you've been able to make use the saxophone in this very creative way, and i can't wait to start practicing these techniques on my own sax!

This technique is still eluding me, I can make a really FORCEFUL pop sound now, but I can't achieve a clear resonant tone. The biggest issue is transitioning from achieving suction to forming a proper embouchure. Actually applying an embouchure forces you to almost relearn how to get suction because you have to create it closer to the tip of your tongue. I find that in trying to actually do it, my jaw and tongue start hurting like crazy, and 9 times out of 10 I overshoot the amount of air I push out and create a loud, wonky squawk rather than that nice hollow tone. Consistency seems to be a big challenge as well. Hitting it once out of a dozen times isn't all that encouraging.

Great tutorial. I find that I can do this, I think, without a reed and/or mouthpiece first, with my tongue at the roof at my mouth kind of like saying a very hard and forceful "T." Can't wait to try this out on my tenor.

So now I can do a quite strong slap noise, but only doing an air depression in my closed mouth. I'm afraid I will never be able to release air at the same time doing that ... I'll keep practicing and watching the video again and again... (Please excuse my english:-)

Hi Derek. Really interesting videos. I have a question about this technique. Does the type of mouthpiece and reeds one uses play a big role achieving this effect? I am still using a Jupiter student saxophone with an otto link hard rubber mouthpiece and 2 1/2 Java reeds. Btw I love the PMauriat Saxophones. My previous teacher Karen Devroop also plays one. They are just really expensive. Loving the videos. Regards from South Africa, Cape Town.

+Beatbox Sax I have figured out how to make the slapping sound using my tongue, but to do so, I generally have to put my mouth over almost the entire mouthpiece; It works better if I use almost my whole tongue. It is much harder to do it with less of my tongue, which I need to do in order to improve my embouchure with the different tones. Do you have any tips to make it a little easier? I just so happen to have the same mouthpiece you do, if that helps at all.

I'm still trying to develope the technique, it seems as if the suction on the reed is caused by some motion (at least that's what i noticed during the only sucessful try). Am I suposed to blow air and, at the same time, stop its flow with the tongue technique?

I can get the suction on the reed alone well enough around the middle of my tongue, but the whole thing starts going awry when I add the mouthpiece. I can't seem to get even a remotely good tone without swallowing the whole mouthpiece. The absolute hardest part to master is getting a good suction closer to the end of your tongue. Pushing air out is a challenge as well, because my inclination is to try and get a "pop" through sucking in, but that really only creates a false pop that doesn't produce any real tones.

Love the videos, and hearing you play/beatbox...so cool. I've been practicing this technique (slap tongue), and I seem to be able to get a very loud pop noise, but it really is devoid of a specific tone. When I try and push more air, I get the tone, but then it just sounds like I am honking out the note, rather than that nice subtle pop + tone. Any tips?

Hi! Thanks for the video! (I practiced these techniques long before the appearance of your videos). I get to do these techniques, but only when I use the tip of tongue (because of this I almost always crack the reed), but actually the tip of the tongue should rest against the teeth, the position of the tongue should be traditional, doesn't it? +Beatbox Sax Hey Derrick when I work this technique in the low octaves, the notes actually sound a whole step higher than the note I'm playing. For instance I slap tongue a low B flat and it sounds like C. Is this normal or is there another way? When I play the note using tongue ramming, the proper notes sounds. Thanks for your help.

i got kind of confused when you started to put the mouthpiece in your mouth to see if you cann form suction. Instead of pushing the reed down on the tongue, you let the tongue reach the reed, but you didn't explain how to do that with getting suction by putting force on the tongue intstead of the reed
