I really want a 40k RPG where you can create your own character apart of any of the main factions(SoB, Space Marines, Chaos, etc.) and you get to explore multiple worlds and what not.

Mechanicus is peak of 40K games. The gameplay is pretty good, but the OST and atmosphere just makes it godlike

yeah and saying that is the top is kinda sad because while it's a good game...it's not amazing. I put in a decent number of hours but it's nothing like what I've put into other games. It doesn't have that much replayability imo

When they do 40K games centred around Chaos being the antagonist I hope they have the other three being just as prominent as Nurgle, maybe DarkTide and Chaos Gate can do that down the line.

true Inquisitor martyr was all nurgle as well, even though tit-snitch would have been a much more thematic choice, there were a few blood letters in space marine but the chaos sorcerer lord was the main antag not a khorne plot

It looks like it is a reboot of the old computer game from the 80s called "Chaos Gate" with Ultramarines. Again you fight Chaos and the gameplay looks similar, including having a squad (or three later IIRC) moving as individuals. Overwatch, melee, jump infantry smashing down were all there. Seriously similar. What I want to know is when a character throws a grenade do they shout "A gift from the Emperor!"...

I would say that no more chaos pls, chaos is the antagonist in every single friggin game. this is a universe where everybody is everybody's enemy, eldar tau orks whatever.

My two cents is that Nurgle is used cause Khorne looks too much like generic demons, Slaanesh is risky for ratings and Tzeentch's mutating nature requires too much animation work and is ranged focused, which makes melee combat less easy to pull off.

Dawn of war 1 is actually a great game created by relic games in which is the 1st game where they implemented resource gathering which isnt based on mining resources but on territory held which means there's heavy action in all stages of the game. Relic later implemented the same mechanic in company of heroes.

i played Dawn of War for the first time a couple years ago and it's impressive how well it holds up. Sure, the graphics are dated, but the requisition system just works better and more simply than, say, wood and iron in Stronghold Crusader. My only gripe is the core campaign was a little easy and the land speeder was a little cheesy.

Dawn of War 1 is hands down the best 40k game. Dawn of War 2 is okay but could have been better. But Dawn of War 3 is obviously absolute garbage.

the fist 2 DoW games felt like CoH 2 for me which is a great plus for me. Also I started writing about CoH before reading your comment completely which could be a downer on my side but for me is a huge upper on your/our side

God that game needs to have its engine updated to 64 bit so mods arent limited and so that you wont crash just because u want a thousand grey knights running around.

Decided to comment this because majorkill said that all 40k games are either bad or just clones of better games yet, there is a 40k game that actually is a pioneer and have introduced a new mechanic that is still being used by rts games being released 15-20 years later, which is territory based resource gathering. Im pretty sure its daw 1 which is the 1st to do it.

Fun fact. This is actually a stand-alone sequel to a 90s 40K XCOM-Like that was just called WH40K: Chaos Gate and had you playing the Ultramarines. It's notable for having a really good soundtrack tho.

Space Marine 2 isn't out for at least another year+ so we won't get too much until closer to launch. Darktide is releasing in September, for now.

"Launched bug free." DEFINTELY not an XCom clone then. :P In all seriousness, I am excited for these smaller companies to try their hand at Warhammer games. Smaller budget games tend to be more creative and enjoyable, from my experience. They also will probably be less likely to do too much to the already established lore, which in the current year, is a plus.

Indeed considering Xcom2 had been out for years and they fucked it over by changing the launcher so now mods dont work and with all the Crazys wanting everything "Inclusive". This type of game is refreshing to see!

Indeed. I am perfectly okay with taking an existing template and doing your own spin on it, and I love it when smaller, less greedy/less corporate/more creative studios get a crack at these big ips. They tend to do some really cool stuff. Space marine 2 looks dope, and it is coming from a company that has done mostly driving simulators.

I remember playing the Xcom EU and EW. I got so attached to my main squad. I remember them going from rookies with crappy guns and by the end they were all Super Soldiers, psychics, and cyborgs. The last few missions didn't feel like I was sending a secret part of the military to fight aliens, it felt like I was sending the Avengers. It was really cool going through that process. I'm really eager to see how far we can develop our Grey Knights in this.

With Grey Knights, can you field normal Space Marine squads, or do they all have to be specific Grey Knights? I'm tempted to defect from Dark Angels and would want to start with Bladeguard Vets. I know that GK don't have Primaris yet 🙂

@@Wykesidefruitmachine grey knights have their own specific units. You want to look for the ''strike squad'' and/or ''grey knight terminators'' you can build all their infantry out of these two boxes. Other than that you have some firstborn marine vehicles like dreadknoughts, rhinos and land raiders. But i wouldn't recommend them because it seems like GW will replace the firstborn units.

Loved both the xcom games, as they felt like well-crafted live-3D versions of a standard Tile-based Wargame, which is a format that's been popular since well before even D&D was created, as the military used them specifically as real battle strategy simulators until they were supplanted by computers.

Played through this game myself. 10/10 would definitely recommend. It's brutal, unforgiving, and really great fun. I also loved the customization options.

I feel the enjoyment level of 40k games (console/PC) is largely subjective. I enjoyed Inquisitor and Mechanicus. Battle Sector was a grind-fest, especially late-game, but it also replicates tabletop to a fairly high degree.

It's an okay game, it's not bad but it's not as great as people are making it out to be. Mandalore, like the autist that he is, raved about the music and atmosphere of a game that's basically a 40k mod of Darkest Dungeon.

Looks fun, tho i do hope they add the 3 others especially Slaanesh (my chaos god of choice) since feel like Slaanesh doesn't get as much attention as the others. But i hope they will all be represented and I hope they will be as prominent as Nurgle in the game

@@skiadrum9029 Fair, but even if they base it of the table top models they look fairly SFW aren't really flashing their bits around and I think TW:WH3 showed them really well as I really like the daemonette designs in it. But yes making SFW dialogue or something might be hard since it would be fairly suggestive. I just want to see some speed murder daemons that dance as they slaughter and a boss fight against a keeper of secrets

Xcom 2 is so good. I remember spending a full 2 weeks non stop playing a campaign. I had Geralt as an absolute melee beast and The Mandalorian, my sniper with jet boots and a pistol that can absolutely demolish people. Actually flying right up to people and wiping them all out with pistol only. So good.

Just cosmetic mods, and building them to suit their characters. You can find witcher pretty easily, and look at different star wars packs for the right kind of mando helmet.

Frankly, I dont think every game NEEDS to be something brand new and epic, so long as its fun. And this game looks FUN. More than that though, I'd love to see more 40K games coming out, possibly focused on someone other than the Space Marines for once. I'd love to play a game as the Eldar for example.

XCOM 2 has some fantastic mods where you can fight against orks and black legion as guardsmen, spacemarines, tau, chaos or even necrons (not sure if necron weapons are available until you unlock Gauss)

This is a lot like Xcom 2, but they continue to build upon Xcom by adding a BUNCH of new mechanics. Very cool game that I didn't even know existed, thank you MajorKill. The cutscenes also being cartoonish is very jarring, as if you're just playing a game on your phone but since this is their first big game I can understand it. You are, a hero

I gotta admit, I’m not a fan of turn based games or mechanics at all. At least when it comes to battle. But I’ll say this; chaos gate has caught my eye, and I genuinely feel I could embrace turn based play-style because of how great it’s looking so far. I’ll wait until it’s fully reviewed after tomorrow and see what the game is like on release. But if it goes good I’ll definitely give it a try.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's really cool how chaos gate 1998 mirrored X-COM at the time, and how Daemonhunters mirrors XCOM nowadays.

I think the artstyle is amazing actually. At first I thought it looked too cartoony but it really looks like the tabletop and oldschool warhammer artwork before they dialled up the Marvel.

Does it "feel" like your commanding the Imperium's best? Meaning, are the enemies lore-correct to be a challenge to astartes/grey knights. A greater demon of nurgle figure 4 grey knights or 50 well-equipped standard marines can confront it but what about the rest of the enemies? Cultists should be free kills and not capable of even scratching the paint on a terminator...

If a games combat is too easy it becomes boring. Think that's why even in tabletop things don't match the lore.

@@thelitmango6333 Yeah that makes sense. Though I would like some moments of feeling overpowered so there is a sense of that lore-level strength. Take the Deathwing shooter for example, if you play well you can feel like a true centuries veteren terminator. Play like a derp and the tyranids prove their freakish power.

My biggest issue with just about all 40k games is they constantly only let you play as space marines. Space marines are ok if you are into bland vanilla but personally I want to play the necrons, tau, or one of the other unique factions. It's like playing d&d and only being allowed to play as a human and to me that's simply boring.

Battlesector lets you play as nids and necrons although the second one is dlc. Battle fleet gothic armada 2 lets you play as nids and necrons in separate campaigns.

I've played xcom 1 & 2 both all xpacs + long war mod on replay through, hard mode and ironman. Phoenix point, wasteland, Mafia... Etc It's safe to say, I'm famillair with the genre. When I saw this I got so fucking hyped. Watching you review the game is funny because it was exactly all of the xcom tropes and usuals. But with a 40k twist. And I couldn't be happier. Looks great. Sometimes you don't need to reinvent the wheel. Just lay a dope ass skin over everything. 🙏🏼👌🏻

Personally I’m loving the art style. I wouldn’t say bad graphics at all, but you’re right they are cartoon-y. For something as simple as a point and click Top down strategy, this game has loads of really in-depth mechanics that make it (very) challenging and satisfying. Once you’re over the initial information overload and you understand how all the bits work, it’s a pretty great game in my opinion

This game is fucking awesome. Only gripe is that i think it would fit better as a deathwatch game or any loyalist chapter. Grey knights in the lore are memeably overpowered so it doesn't make much sense that a chaos basic human with an auto rifle/stubber is going to do anything against a space marine much less a grey knight. Probably should have made all the basic units chaos marines or lesser daemons.

If no one's gonna say it then ,We Demand a Death Watch Cross X-Com ! Same difficulty as X-Com infused in Death Watch Setting while you Customize each Member and Chapter Perks Pros and Cons 1. A Son of Sanguineous Melee Bonus but has a tendency to go Berserk in a few turns 2. Son of Russ with Dodge or Reflex bonus but Lesser Aiming skills 3. Son of Corax with Excellent Stealth perks Basically like XCOM in skill build but with chapters perks while like in Death Watch they need to form bonds to have better perks or Debuff when a member dies ( yes Perma kills )

Another very good Warhammer 40k game is "Warhammer: 40.000 Mechanicus". It's a very strategic tactical game and an XCOM clone as well^^

I don't think companies realize how far a little faith in their fans and content creators go. I was probably going to buy it anyways, I've been playing Xcom since Enemy Unknown, but as soon as you started talking about how the company sent you a review copy, a bunch of hobby stuff, and all they wanted you to do is adhere to the embargo, I was sold. They had faith in their game, which seems like a passion project, and faith in you to enjoy it without twisting any arms. I love when companies do that instead of some of the shit AAA publishers try to pull. Can't wait to play it now

You should try Warhammer 40k Battlesector, one of the closest games to the table top experience out now. The Necrons just dropped and we expecting new factions to be announced this month

I wish they had other factions you could play as. Sure other Chapters would be great but this is the style of game I've always wanted from Warhammer with 1 thing missing. I can't play as the enemies of the Imperium. Tyranids, Necrons, hell I'd even play as Daemons if you'd let me but just Space Marines doesn't do it for me, especially without the Raven Guard. Maybe they'll make a second one with the Xenos and a chance to play them. But I'm still picking this up. It's in the style I think they should make for any Warhammer videogame because it can capture the abilities and essence of the tabletop.

I'm a XCOM player since the mid 90's and played of course Chaos Gate Ultramarines. I was positively surprised when XCOM moved on from the old AP system. I hope this new Chaos Gate iteration will do the same for me.

We NEed 8 player skirmisher! Big map, with RNG customoziation, always randomish maps, on different planet. with goals. contest section. reach mountain etc.

I'm a friend with one of the people that worked on this game. They haven't made a Full PC release before this game, but they aren't new to games. THey did a lot of mobile games in the past though.

You should definitely try Warhammer 40K: Mechanicus, for it is an amazing 40K game, certainly among the best ones. And it is, finally, a tactical game that is NOT an XCOM clone.
