In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music by Slayer for the first time. Our friend Flameulator is today's Guest DJ, and he has selected Seasons in the Abyss from Slayer as well as a new prog/metal Christmas-themed cover version from a group known as Sleigher (featuring musicians from several prominent bands). In short, this music exceeded my expectations. Come along for the ride!

Maybe it's 1000th times I'm listening to this masterpiece but still can't get enough of Dave Lombardo's drumming. No overplay, also no laziness, perfect tone, everything is so on point and creative. Drums are always considered as a supportive instrument but Dave's drumming is carrying the whole song from right at the beginning till the very last second. Genius!

@@metalmark1214 -- I did not know this! He recorded with them previously (The Gathering) and it was great. Sad to see Gene Hoglan leave but Dave is god. I wonder if this means that he's done with Suicidal Tendencies. I loved what they did together, but I can imagine that for someone like Dave, the length of time between ST albums could be really frustrating. Anyway, will excitedly look forward to a new Testament album with Dave behind the kit. I do hope that Gene is ok though.

A lot of heavier metal relies on diminished and octotonic scales, as well as rapid modal interchange between modes with opposite degrees (like the Major 2nd and Minor 3rd in Natural Minor and the Minor 2nd and Major 3rd in Phrygian Dominant). Likewise if you ever look up "The Metallica scale" people will talk about a 10 note scale which is really more like a combination of Aeolian and Locrian. Most metal writers with just a little bit of theory knowledge will just call this stuff "Chromatic," but that's a little misleading if you look at it from a classical perspective because we are often talking about rather large leaps. I find it's very similar to Bartok's concept of "polymodal chromaticism." I like how you are less fixated on chord progressions, because a lot (not all) of metal is focused on playing melodies anywhere in the mode, using pedal point on the root to ground it, like raga or modal jazz. I think your ear is improving for that kind of thing. I recommend War Ensemble from Slayer on this same album. It's significantly faster, but I you really focus on the intervals and their place in the rhythm, you'll see something powerfully expressive, and what it's expressing is very dark.

Quite possibly the best Daily Doug I've ever seen! I would never have guessed, in 1990, that one day someone would use the word "tasteful" to describe this song! For more Slayer-y goodness, I'd recommend Dead Skin Mask from the same album. Even 32 years later, it still sends a chill down my spine every time. Others you might want to check out should include War Ensemble, Bloodline, Mandatory Suicide, South of Heaven and, of course, Rainin' Blood (from the album Reign In Blood. Do you see what they did there?). Alternatively, if you wang something a bit shorter, try Necrophobic (also from Reign In Blood). Two verses, two solos, three choruses in 1'38". It's . . . frenetic.

One of the aspects that has always impressed me a lot in this song, aside from the excellent level of composition and the band's beautiful overall sound, is dave Lombardo's drumming, which is not limited to a technical show but is very musical. Aside from the speed of some of the drum rolls or double bass drum parts, some of his accents have incredible impact and sound like a slap in the face (in a good sense). And he would LOVE the GORGEOUS keyboard/classical guitar interlude in "Revelation(Mother Earth)." Happier even that you appreciated the listen, and we may get some more in the future. I'd recommend "Disciple" from the album "God Hates Us All" for the Slayer list. "Check out the drums y'all! How do you hit 'em like that without falling into 'em?" LOL. Great statement! Because it's Dave Lombardo. He's unique in comparison to other metal drummers. He plays with a groove, plays fast, but with a burst of power that is unlike any other metal drummer.

Great song off a great album. Love this jam. Cool video too 😎. Oldie but goodie here. This whole album kicks ass. Not one bad song off this great album. A solid fuckin 10. . I saw this album tour twice. Kick ass concert both times. Testament opened up for them. Both bands killed it. . Good memories. Good times. . 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Hey Doug! I've been a big fan for a long time. I appreciate your open minded passion and insight for music, please keep it up! I think you would find something interesting about the band YOB. They're a great doom metal band with uniquely epic songs that can range from super heavy to emotionally touching. I would suggest Beauty in Falling Leaves or Adrift in the Ocean.

so happy you enjoyed slayer's track here. They have lots of riff-riots in reign in blood (which was the inspiration for an entire genre of music, death metal). But this track is more traditionally musical while keeping some of the songwriting techniques around (tonal row, chromatic, or as you point out, octotonic base)

Jeff was the guy that started it all for me as a guitar player, I remember getting the Slayer Christ Illusion DVD, watching South of heaven and when Jeff did that guitar slam during the riff, it was the coolest thing to my 14 year old eyes. I remember running to the lounge and telling my dad he has to see this and then telling him I want a guitar and he bought me my first guitar, fast forward to 2008 and my dad bought me a Jeff Hanneman signature. Jeff was the coolest player ever and I still regret selling that guitar.

Pretty cool Doug is wearing a Heineken shirt, I wonder if he knows that Jeff Hanemen used the emblem with his last name. Also as far as Dave Lombardo goes, this is his best work with slayer, his best work overall is the first two Grip inc. albums in my opinion. The drums are next level in Grip Inc.

It's actually a Haken shirt, but the multiple reasons for Doug to wear it in the reaction was the extra cherry on top.

i love the way they play around with the intervals in the diads they play in the chorus. Sometimes it's a minor third, sometimes a major third, sometimes it moves in parallel, sometimes it stays put when the bass note moves. It's so wriggly and heavy and disconcerting.

@@Keith_from_LBC no I fully understand great metal bands and what separates bands like megadeth Metallica and even anthrax for that matter is some sort of musical knowledge and theory in their lead playing wich slayer has zerooooooo they hit harmonics and do bar dives and have barely hit a note in key, so I take it your not a musician or you would clearly know this,it fits what their doing and it’s a good thing because if they tried to jam with any other band or different type of musicians they would fail miserably, after 40 years you would think they would try to learn one proper scale lol
