This is my fave Slayer album. The slower tempo makes them sound even more terrifying somehow. And it grooves like hell. Plus the only band who sound amazing with all the dynamics being crushed out during the production, and yet it doesn't hurt the ears at loud volumes. That's what makes Slayer sound so unique.

Dave Lombardo had an upbringing steeped in Cuban music, and used to help out running discos as a kid, he was no stranger to a groove. Thrashing thru the tracks in 4/4 , we’ll yes, he had that nailed down and at the time, as fast as anyone in the game, but it was the breakdowns, the moshes that set him apart and made him loved by so many drummers. He made demonic thrash swing!!! His parts on this album are fantastic, so musical, so powerful! For many fans Lombardo made Slayer!!

Also be aware that back in the day, mandatory suicide closed out side A of the album, so the outro also functions as a way to wind down and close out the whole side. In the context of listening to the whole album, it doesn't feel like as much of a letdown as it does in isolation. It's just a little break before you flip the album and get pummeled by Ghosts of War.

Part of the reason (i think) for the way the song ended is because it was placed at the end of the album side. Back in day of albums, song placement was a big deal to some people/artists. It would be cool if you did the whole album South of Heaven. The songs flowed together which gave the album a certain feel.

Part of the problem is that they react to individual songs. But as fans, we listened to the whole first side of the album (then changed sides and listened to side two). These songs weren't singles. I doubt many fans heard this song isolated from the rest of the album, and so their experience reacting to this song bears very little similarity to the experience fans had when first hearing this.

I went to a concert in the early 90s that was Testament, Megadeth and Slayer as the headliner. It was hands down the craziest, most insane concert I’ve been to and we had floor seats. Testament and Megadeth are two of my favorite bands, they were great. However, when Slayer hit the stage, the entire atmosphere just switched on a dime. Within the first 2 minutes of the first song, a fight broke out about three rows ahead of us. Everyone was standing on their chairs, and this girl in front of my friend lost her balance and fell backwards. My friend instinctively caught her to keep her from falling and her boyfriend turned around and looked at us like he was ready to throw down. It woulda been 3 of us on just him if it came to it but thankfully his girl immediately explained what happened and he cooled right down. He was pretty big, so it wouldn’t have been a fun time. The fight in front of us and that guy almost coming after us are the two things that stand out about that concert besides the drums. The drums when Slayer came on were hitting so hard. You could feel the bass drum in your chest like someone was thumping on it. That was such a weird feeling. There was a huge mosh pit near the front but that goes with the territory. Honestly it was a great concert but probably the scariest crowd I’ve ever been a part of concert wise.

Great one guys! Listen to a live version of this song. During that end section Tom always ramps up the vocals until he's screaming the words. It has all the energy I think you felt it was missing towards the end. It's intense!

For me the end is great because I like to think that he sings like that because soldiers loose sensibility, he describes horrible things like if it was just another day

It's great you guys loving metal! When I was young in the late 80s we had our Jean jackets full of different band patches and pins and at the partys we always had great music playing from slayer, beastie boys,, primus, dead Kennedys ,mercyful fate, nwa, overkill, dead milkmen, black sabbath and on and on it truly was a great time to live!

The influence Rick Rubin had on this album is very much felt. I think the guys like Slayer songs from this album is because they’re slowed down but heavier and that’s the Rick Rubin influence
@lisemzarate40292 жыл бұрын
My first slayer show was in Oakland, in 1989 I think, they were recording Decade of Aggression, it was fkn insane. Blood everywhere, before they started the prop blood. Now understanding the difference between Slayer and Queensryche, you understand why thrash fans resent the "metal" reference.

the production on south of heaven is the highest level that the band reached. there is some very nice work done on these tracks a lil tricks in the prod. its recorded like a big rock album and less like a traditional underground metal release.

I really love that you guys do this, so many people wouldn’t even consider listening to these heavy metal songs purely based on that fact that they are metal and not what they are “supposed” to be listening too or isn’t “cool” you 2 rock

I was in high school when this album came out... I was smiling ear to ear waiting for you to get to the filthy main riff. That groove hits SO HARD! 2 of my favs are "Hallowed Point" and "War Ensamble" off their Seasons In the Abyss album. On another note, so many people hear the title of the song, and say "Oh my GAWD! They want people to commit suicide!" But you're right, it is about soldiers in a war, following orders and being killed. My favorite Metallica song (Disposable Heroes) is basically the same idea.
@SamFerguson2 жыл бұрын
Glad you guys did this one. Definitely a classic and one of my favorite Slayer songs. Two quick comments: 1) Yeah, Dave Lombardo is an absolute beast. In my opinion, he's the best of the entire crop of thrash metal drummers, in the top five of any list of best overall metal drummers, and maybe should be in discussion for one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. 2) It's funny what you said about the energy being different when Slayer takes the stage. It's really true. I've been to a LOT of metal shows, and I've seen Slayer maybe eight or ten times if you include festival appearances. And I love Slayer. Love them. But every time they're about to go on, I actually feel just a little bit nervous. It's a good kind of nervous, but there's a sort of anticipation of exactly how hard my face is about to be shredded off. Once they actually start playing and I'm into the sound, the nervousness goes away and I have a great time. But for about 10 minutes before they go on, I'm like "Wait, was my mom right about 'devil music'?" XD

You are correct, none of the other bands come even close to the intensity and aggression of Slayer live. Also as you said you can't put them in a poll with other bands. Slayer is only for the hardcore. The other bands especially Metallica will always win in a poll. They are very mainstream, even people that didn't listen to metal would listen to Metallica, but never Slayer. Slayer is the ultimate thrash band in my opinion! Also, been with you guys since the beginning of your channel and have suggested this song many times :-) One of my favorites.

This is the traditional path of a Slayer fan. At first, everything just sounds like noise. Then you come back to them and you start to understand the musical aspect. when you come back for third or fourth listen, Slayer has you hooked. Great video guys, I’ve loved seeing you both develop over time!
@SuperTugz2 жыл бұрын
That's metal in general, most of it just sounds like noise to the untrained ear but as your listening ability develops, you hear it differently and "get it" and this is more prevalent with Slayer than any other band. Most people accused them of just spamming E note riffs and playing sporadic random-note solos but when you really dig deep and listen they had so much more musical talent than they were ever rightfully given credit for.

You should remember that in the time when this song was released people were listening to music in a little bit different way than now. We were listening albums as a whole. Singles in metal music were not popular. So every song sounds a bit different if you hear it in the context of other from the same album. Even this ending does. Regards from Poland 👊
@steveford78832 жыл бұрын
in concert though, the ending seems like a whole new song. Slayer is very talented at taking lackluster album parts and breathing a whole new life into them live. The vocals are really delivered powerfully and the drums usually become equally chaotic. That combined with the light show, and it becomes one of the highlights of the concert.

I've been watching you guys for a couple of years now. Absolutely positively, y'all couldn't be any better. Your personalities completely jive with one another, and the insight and banter is second to none. I love how both of you can describe in detail the music, and the feeling evoked from the music. I'm 51 years old, and have been hooked on rock music since right around 1980 when I heard my first Beatle song. ( kinda Cliché I know lol 😆😉 ) From there, fairly quickly, I am amassed uite the cassette tape collection with Led Zeppelin Black Sabbath and a lot of early to mid 80s recent metal. I try to be open minded with different genres but I'm still always going to embrace the rock genre to the fullest. I wish I had heard of you guys sooner, and I wish I had interacted with y'all with suggestions since I have a massive encyclopedia of rock 'n' roll knowledge from the mid 60s to the mid 90s. Regardless, I'm gonna shut up now and get to my point lol. Mandatory suicide is certainly one of the best slayer tunes. I'm going to recommend Bloodline, , not because it's as good a jam as South Of Heaven, seasons in the abyss, or mandatory suicide, because in my opinion it's not, but just from the standpoint of absolute powerful thrash metal. That song epitomizes this, I do believe. Yeah, a lot of people can play hard and heavy, but there's just a particular vibe and attitude about it that's a notch above when Slayer does it. So check out Bloodline when you guys have the time. I appreciate y'all very much. You are phenomenal at what you do. Much respect. Peace and love. ...
